Rumors began circulating earlier this month that Ford Motor Co. would discontinue its electrified F-150 Lightning. It appears those rumors were true. Yesterday, the Blue Oval announced a new version of the pickup and confirmed the end of production for the original F-150 Lightning.
The F-150 Lightning EREV introduces a new type of plug-in hybrid vehicle. Similar to the new RAM 1500 REV and upcoming Scout EVs, the F-150 Lightning EREV combines an electric powertrain with a generator. This latest version of the Lightning aims to ease range anxiety for drivers who want more miles between charges while still having the benefits of an EV. Ford estimates a range of more than 700 miles.
There’s no word yet on real-world MPG or towing capacity, but Ford promises more details next year, along with launch timing and pricing.
Want better fuel economy but don’t want to wait for new technology? Consider the current Ford F-150 with the optional PowerBoost hybrid or the 2026 Toyota Tundra i-Force Max hybrid.
If you’re set on an EV pickup and don’t need the extended range, check out the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, or the always-divisive Tesla Cybertruck.
