The 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V Bill Blass Edition is the pinnacle of late-70s American "land yacht" luxury. Designed in collaboration with the famous fashion designer, this model features a distinctive navy blue and white nautical color scheme, a simulated convertible carriage roof, and a plush interior equipped with premium luxury amenities, including an analog Cartier clock, power windows/locks/seats, air conditioning, and an 8-track tape player.
The Bill Blass Edition was part of Lincoln’s “Designer Series” lineup, alongside Cartier, Givenchy, and Emilio Pucci models. These special editions paired fashion-designer branding with unique paint schemes, interiors, and trim packages.
The Bill Blass' exterior features a bold, two-tone White and Midnight Blue paint scheme, accented by elegant Gold pinstripes and a designer logo. It features a simulated convertible carriage roof, hidden headlights, turbine-style wheels, and the iconic "Continental" spare tire hump on the trunk lid.
The cabin pampers occupants with thickly padded blue or white leather seats with color-coordinated accents, Bill Blass designer insignia, woodgrain trim, and deep-pile carpeting.
Under the massive hood lies Ford's 400 cubic inch V8 engine, producing roughly 159 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed to the rear wheels via a C6 3-speed automatic transmission. Despite weighing close to 4,800 pounds, its heavy-duty suspension, power steering, and power brakes provide the classic "float-on-a-cloud" luxury ride that Lincoln was famous for.
1979 marked the final model year for the full-size "land yacht" Mark V platform, being replaced by significantly downsized coupes in 1980. The Mark V became the best-selling generation of the Mark series, with over 228,000 produced from 1977–1979. Around 6,700 Bill Blass editions were built for 1979.
The Bill Blass Mark V is celebrated today as a rolling monument to 1970s American automotive excess and design.
