When it comes to electrified van options, the ID.Buzz is currently the lone contender. Mercedes-Benz and Ford do offer electrified versions of their fleet van offerings, but those aren’t positioned towards your average consumer. That void in the automotive market looks to change though as Kia has unveiled their entrant into the electric van market. The PV5 features a futuristic exterior design and is planned to provide a flexible interior fit for families and cargo.
The Kia PV5 was originally introduced in 2024 as a concept, but the company has turned around and announced it as a planned production vehicle. The unique looking van is based from Kia’s new Platform Beyond Vehicle mobility solution that aims to generate fit-for-purpose EVs and couple those designs with advanced software solutions. While there’s a heavy push towards commercial vehicle sales, Kia showcased the PV5 Wkndr concept in which they transformed the model into an off-roading camper van.
The PV5 is recorded as providing a length of 185”, width of 74.6”, height of 74.8”, and rides on a wheelbase of 117.9”. Inside is what looks to be a spacious and configurable cabin that can provide seating for up to seven passengers or down to five passengers in exchange for additional cargo space in the rear.
On the tech front, Kia has said that the PV5 passenger will carry advanced driver-assistance systems like lane assist and driver alerts. Inside is both a 7.5″ digital cluster and a 12.9″ infotainment touchscreen that utilizes the Android Automotive Operating System. This operating system offers its own downloadable application market and benefits from Over-the-Air updates that’ll ensure owners will get the very latest advancements in their PV5 experience.
Performance specs have yet to be fully unveiled, but we suspect that Kia will offer single and dual motor electric powertrain variants and a range of battery pack options. We could expect similar if not better performance to the brand’s EV9, which offers up to 304 miles of estimated range on a single charge with a single motor or up to 280 miles with dual motors.
Kia has currently announced plans for releasing the PV5 in South Korea and Europe as early as this 2025, but the model’s North American release has yet to be determined. However, camouflaged Kia PV5 preproduction models have been spotted testing on US roads. This could be a good sign that the electric van is coming to the American market, but only time will tell.
