Regardless of the trim, you choose with the 2019 Suburban, you’ll get a V8. The engine choice won’t be based on MPG since both engines get within one mpg of each other, but it will be power or more power. The 355 horsepower 5.3-liter V8 is standard on the LS and LT and will pull the 5600 lb behemoth to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. That’s a powerful engine, but you can get more. The big 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 does it in less than 6 seconds and runs power through Chevy’s incredible 10-speed transmission. But wait, there’s more. With the RST, you can add a Borla Exhaust and other pieces to make it sound like the “sport” utility vehicle that it is. With the RST and active magnetic suspension, it’s a fun-to-drive monster that bows down to no one.

If you choose the LT and LS, the transmission and standard suspension setup are still smooth riding but wallows around quite a bit on the freeway. It’s not a bad thing, but you will notice the difference if you drive an LS and a Premier or RST.

Although the 2019 Suburban is riding on a big truck chassis from its Silverado brother, it also shares the pickup’s excellent steering. We’ve appreciated how Chevy gives its big vehicles quick and light steering that seems to make the Suburban smaller. The RST has Brembo’s with larger disks and more brake pad area, but even the standard brakes do a quick job of shutting down forward momentum. And they do so with a lack of drama, even in panic stops.

2019 Chevy Suburban Fuel Economy and MPG

If you’re looking at buying the Suburban, we trust you understand that it will not get the MPG of a Honda CR-V. That’s not to say that Chevrolet isn’t trying to help you out. The V8s can increase gas mileage by deactivating cylinders, but you’re still looking at 14 mpg in the city and a not too horrible 23 mpg on the highway. If you do go with the 6.2-liter, you’ll want to use the recommended premium unleaded to get the most performance and best gas mileage.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

Once you climb up into the Suburban, everything is big – in like living room big. The dashboard has large proper knobs instead of fiddly little buttons or, worse yet, touchscreen only. And while we’ve mentioned the touchscreen, it’s small compared to what you’ll get in a Ram or Tesla, but everything is very readable, and GM’s infotainment system is well thought out and responsive. The center console is appropriately massive for a vehicle this big and seems large enough to store a week’s worth of clothing, including shoes and toiletries. Standard with the Premier and optional on other trims is the wireless charger housed on the center armrest. The area is indented and keeps your phone stable so as not to interfere with your elbow.

Whether you choose a bench seat or captain’s chairs in the second row, you won’t be complaining about legroom. The Premier trim helps you out on getting into the third row with power tilting seats, but otherwise, you’ll have to move the heavy seats on your own. The captain’s chairs are otherwise locked into place, so you can’t slide them forward or backward.

We were comfortable in each seat but felt that the third row would be best for kids. The legroom is there, but the floor is higher because of the frame and rear differential/axle. Chevy wanted to maximize headroom, so the seat is closer to the floor. You’ll have your knees in a less comfortable position than normal. For your convenience, Chevy also gives you the option of a power fold-flat rear bench.

Thankfully, no matter where you sit, you have an excellent view of what’s going on outside. Having a 360-degree view isn’t just a good thing for passengers; it’s also a safety measure for the driver. Unlike many current SUVs, Chevy gives you maximum window area for your viewing pleasure. Assisting in this low-stress environment is the quietness of the interior. Although you’ll hear some road noise if you get the active suspension and 22-inch wheels, the wind noise is negligible.

Should you want to take a lengthy trip or deliver someone to the airport, you have 39 cubic feet of storage behind the third row and a generous 95 cubic feet when you fold down the 2nd and 3rd rows. If you option the hands-free operated tailgate, you can throw in 44 carry-on bags in the back. That’s a massive amount of luggage.

Chevy hasn’t forgotten that families often have smaller items to carry with them. You’ll have many cup holders, pockets, and bins to place or forget things. Who hasn’t left cups of Cheerios around the car? And there are secret compartments underneath the cargo floor with moveable dividers that can keep small items safe protected.

Entertainment & Technology

Every 2019 Suburban comes standard with the MyLink infotainment system, an 8-inch touch screen, satellite and HD Radio, five USB ports, Bluetooth, three-prong outlets, a six-speaker sound system, 4G Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. You can also add a Blu-Ray entertainment system or the excellent sounding Bose audio system with its 9-speakers.

Even the Suburban LT comes with tri-zone automatic climate control, remote start, remote keyless entry, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and GMs Teen Driver system. Chevrolet takes care of you in the base trim.

GMs MyLink infotainment system has HD graphics, is very user-friendly, and intuitive. You won’t have any trouble understanding the icons in this well-tested system. One issue we have with MyLink is that its voice recognition is hit or miss. It’s a friendly technology when it works. But it doesn’t always work.

Safety Features

The Chevy Suburban can be optioned with a full safety suite. An ample amount of safety technology is available if you have the money. Chevy continues to make you pay for enhanced driver safety assists on the base model like many auto manufacturers. The Suburban’s top safety suite adds low-speed automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and automatic high-beam headlights and comes standard beginning on the LT trim.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2018 model a five-star side-impact score, but only four-star ratings overall and frontal impact.

What we think

2019 Chevy Suburban - plants.gm.com

2019 Chevy Suburban – plants.gm.com |  Shop 2019 Chevrolet Suburban on Carsforsale.com

As we said, the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban is a land yacht, but we’re glad they’re still building and selling it. While Toyota is getting rid of its Land Cruiser, it’s refreshing that Chevy continues to update, redesign and sell an old-school V8 family cruiser. Sure, you could buy four base-level Prius’ for the cost of a fully-loaded Suburban. But even with four Prius’, you wouldn’t be able to carry the people and equipment on a long trip in the expansive luxury offered by a Suburban. We like you, Suburban. Don’t ever go away.
