The Cars Mario Andretti Drives Off the Track

Mario Andretti may be known as a legendary driver of fast cars and for his appearance in the movie Cars, but he’s also the owner of quite a few high-performance sports cars. He doesn’t flaunt his collection as much as other celebrities do. While Kevin Hart is posting his custom rides on Instagram, it’s hard to find posts about Mario Andretti’s personal car collection. He may not brag about them as much, but he’s got them! Most of them are at his sprawling estate in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

This isn’t a complete list of current cars that Mario owns. See, Mario doesn’t necessarily hang on to all the cars he buys. He likes to get them, drive them, and pass them on to someone else. Sometimes he’ll even leave his autograph on the car. Having the signature of the only driver to ever win the Daytona 500, Indianapolis 500, and Formula One World Championship has certainly got to increase the resale value for anyone who buys or sells it later on! Ready to see what’s been parked in Mario Andretti’s garage over the past five decades? Without further ado, start your engines, get ready, get set, GO!

2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

Though the listing has long since expired, Mario Andretti once took to eBay to sell his silver 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. He posed for photos with the car, which had a Pennsylvania license plate that read, “MA 500.” It was a little unusual to see someone like Andretti selling a vehicle on eBay, but whether it was Andretti himself or someone he sold the car to who created the listing, it appeared to be legitimately owned (at least at one point) by Mario Andretti. The auction ended on January 8, 2015 without anyone meeting the requested reserve price, so who knows where the vehicle is at now.

2001 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

The car has presumably changed hands a few times since Mario first bought it in May 2001, but cars like this just go to show, you never know what kind of cool car finds you’ll run across when scrolling through active listings. For example, we once found a Mercedes-Benz S600 that belonged to Michael Jordan. Finds like that are why you always have to be sure to check the records as you’re looking at the dozens of available vehicle details.

Before he owned the ZR1, Andretti owned a 2001 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Yeah, he’s a fan of the Corvette! It’s safe to say that Andretti understands this: it’s a Corvette thing. The first owner of the car, Andretti put around 5,000 miles on the Vette before selling it. The quicksilver metallic paint, red-rimmed wheels, and black and red seat fabric are great color combinations. It was equipped with an aluminum block LS6 engine that mated to a six-speed manual transmission to pump out 385 horsepower of pure Corvette fun!

1946 Ford Super Deluxe

Okay, this wasn’t technically Mario’s car, but the Ford Super Deluxe was the first car the Andretti family owned when they moved from Italy to the United States in June of 1955. The car was a two-door convertible body and seated three people. This 1946 Ford Super Deluxe was a far cry from the cars that Mario would eventually drive during his racing career, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 18.9 seconds. There’s something special about your first car though. Even if you weren’t the one driving it, there are a lot of memories that come from sitting in a crowded back seat during a family road trip.

1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air

When Mario’s father, Alvise Andretti, was ready to upgrade from the Ford, Mario and his twin brother Aldo convinced their father to buy a 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air. The Chevy wasn’t quite to the elder Andretti’s taste, so he got a 1951 Buick instead. That meant that the ‘57 Bel Air got passed down to Mario and Aldo. A red and white hardtop (with the gold V in front) Bel Air was Mario’s first official car. It was a durable one, too. Mario ended up crashing that Chevy three times. I guess you could consider it practice for his future career as a racer? To learn more about Mario’s very first car, take a look at our Retro Review of the 1957 Chevy Bel Air.

1984 Lamborghini Countach S

You’re going to notice a Lamborghini trend going down this list. Let’s start with the 1984 Countach 5000S. This one is equipped with a 5.0-liter V12 and five-speed manual transmission that worked together to make 371 horsepower. Produced from 1974 to 1990, the Countach was first introduced at the 1971 Geneva Auto Show. Just 321 of the 5000 S models were built. This ‘84 model wasn’t the only Countach Andretti owned, though. He also had a 1989 Anniversary Countach in his personal car collection.

1991 Lamborghini Diablo

Another Lamborghini that Andretti owned was this 1991 Lamborghini Diablo. By this point, it’s been owned by several people across the United States, but the first owner was Andretti himself. It’s still got the original mid-mounted 5.7-liter DOHC V12 engine, which was removed, serviced, and reinstalled in 2021. Mated to a five-speed manual transmission, the engine produces 458 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Red on the outside and tan on the inside, the car is in great condition and looks as stylish as it ever was. Now fitted with Bluetooth, this Lambo has been updated, but you’d better be driving it fast enough to create a breeze because the air conditioning no longer works.

2007 Lamborghini Murcielago

Yep, another Lamborghini on the list. This one sets a very different tone than the Countach or Diablo, though. All black, inside and out, this Murcielago LP640 Roadster is sharp, polished, and looks ready to race. The engine is a 6.5-liter V12 combined with a six-speed e-gear transmission to make 631 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque. Leather steering wheel trim, leather dash trim, leather center console trim, leather door trim, and alloy shift knob trim all work to make the inside of the Murcielago stand out. It’s the kind of cabin you want to find yourself in!

1981 Alfa Romeo GTV-6

Another car that Andretti used to own: a 1981 Alfa Romeo GTV-6. It was purchased from the estate of Andretti’s neighbor (apparently, if you’re a neighbor of Andretti, you’ve got a shot at buying one of his cars). This is a rear-wheel drive two-door with a 2.5-liter V6 F engine. The documentation to prove original ownership shows that Andretti bought the car on May 13, 1981. The sales price isn’t listed on the document, but the manufacturer’s suggested retail price at the time was $16,983. The car had 175 miles on it when Andretti purchased it from the Alfa Romeo dealership. Since then, it’s undergone a lot of upkeep. In 2017 the rear brake caliper, water pump, clutch master cylinder, spark plugs, and transmission mounts were all replaced. The engine was tuned up as well.

There’s one more Lamborghini on the list (hey, the man knows what he likes, and he sticks to it)! This time, it’s an orange Lamborghini. Well, technically it’s Arancio Argos, but it’s orange with carbon fiber. Andretti only put 6,000 miles on this Aventador before passing it on to the next buyer. He did leave a note on the car, writing under the front bonnet, “Pls take care of my car!” Apparently the 700 horsepower from the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine just wasn’t quite enough because after Andretti sold this Aventador, he purchased an Avendtador S with 729 horsepower.

Ferrari 360 Modena

If you want to catch Mario Andretti driving around in his Ferraro 360 Modena, you may want to head to Andretti Winery in Napa, California. Andretti has driven his yellow two-seater coupe there a few times. A 3.6-liter V8 mid-engine produces 400 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. Though he probably doesn’t need to floor the gas pedal, the Ferrari 360 Modena will reach 183 mph! Even when going fast, it’s a car that’s sure to stand out thanks to that bright yellow paint and impressive black leather interior.

1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS

During production, between 1967 and 1974, only 31 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS models were produced in the Viola color. Mario Andretti was one of the original owners of a Viola Ferrari Dino. For that reason, these cars easily go for six figures. It’s unclear if Andretti still owns this rarity, but if not, he surely made a good bit of money off of it. Andretti once told a reporter for The Telegraph, “I’ve had a lot of Lamborghinis and Ferraris.” As you can see by going through this list, that’s a very true statement.

Volkswagen Dune Buggy

Not only does Andretti like sports cars, he also likes dune buggies for some off-road fun, especially those with some memories attached. This Dune Buggy, with a VW 1600cc engine, was given to him in 1969 when he won the Indianapolis 500. He still drives it around Pennsylvania today, so it’s possible people could catch a glimpse of Andretti in his buggy. As he says, “Wave if you see me.” If you’re as big of a Dune Buggy fan as Andretti is, then you’ll also want to click over to our VW Dune Buggy Cool Car Find for some extra reading and fun photos.

1976 Lotus Elite

Not every car once owned by a celebrity will fetch a fortune, but it can help. The 1976 Lotus Type 75 Elite was gifted to Mario Andretti by Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars. Produced from 1974 to 1982, the Elite was partially designed by Chapman. The seats are finished with red and cream leather. Chapman made it a point to get celebrities and top-tier drivers behind the wheel of Lotus models whenever he could. A good way to do that is to offer them up as gifts, huh? This left-hand drive vehicle was in dry storage for a long period of time, but it is drivable. Lotus executives confirmed the authenticity of the vehicle. It only sold for £11,250, though. Kind of a steal when you consider the ownership behind it.

2011 Chevrolet Camaro

Okay, a technicality here. Mario Andretti didn’t own this special edition fifth-generation Camaro, but it was made by Magnaflow in his honor. Mario also drove it out onto the auction block at a SEMA show, so that has to count for something. Magnaflow added a rear diffuser with a center exit exhaust, a carbon fiber hood, and a 20-inch set of HRE Performance Wheels. Along with all of that comes some extra performance in the form of a TVS2300 supercharger and a twin-disc clutch. Inside are custom leather seats, leather armrests, and suede pillars. This yellow 2011 Chevy Camaro sounds like a great car to have in a personal collection, but this one didn’t go to Andretti. It was auctioned off in 2012 with proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project.

You’ve seen some of Mario’s cars, but he’s not the only one in the family with exotic, expensive cars. Michael Andretti, Mario’s son, owns several Ferraris, a Testarossa, a Toyota 4×4 truck, a Mondial Cabriolet, and, of course, he loves a good Lamborghini!
