Part of the second generation that arrived in 2021, the Chevy Trailblazer is one of two subcompact crossovers in the Chevrolet lineup. Slotting below the Equinox, the latest Trailblazer receives a handful of updates over the 2023 Trailblazer, including a newly standard 11” infotainment interface and 8” digital instrument panel display. Also standard for 2024 is push-button start and cruise control, while the front-end gets a fresh face more in line with the mid-size Blazer. Additionally, the paint palette gains Copper Harbor and Cacti Green colors.

A little crossover with style

The 2024 Trailblazer offers two slightly different turbocharged inline-3 powertrains. The base 1.2L mill makes 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. It is FWD only, pairs with a CVT, and delivers 29 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. An optional 1.3L version ups output a bit to 155 horsepower and 174 torques. With it, you can add AWD for $1,500 and gain a 9-speed automatic transmission in the process.
Fuel efficiency with the 1.3L engine is the same around town and slightly better on the highway at 33 mpg for FWD versions. Adding the AWD running gear drops the city figure to 27 mpg and the highway to just 26 mpg. Technically, you can tow with the Chevy Trailblazer, but the maximum rating is only 1,000 pounds.

Though small, the Trailblazer offers great legroom for a subcompact SUV with 39” in the back row. It’s also flexible on the cargo front with a front passenger seat that folds flat to stow objects up to 8 ½’ long. Or you can fold the second row down to handle 54 cubic feet of cargo.
Materials lean black and plastic as you would expect at this price point, but touches of red and yellow add pizazz, while the black and brown faux leather design on ACTIV models looks nice. Heated front seats show up on LT trim lines, but bigger ticket items like a panoramic moonroof and hands-free tailgate require the optional Sun and Liftgate package.

New for 2024, every Chevy Trailblazer comes with an 8” gauge cluster screen and 11” central touchscreen for infotainment. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and remote connectivity all come standard. There is a Bose 7-speaker audios system, but it only comes with the Technology package.
As for safety, the Trailblazer earns a 5-star overall crash rating from the NHTSA and the 2022 model year took home Top Safety Pick+ honors from the IIHS. Chevy fits every 2024 Trailblazer with forward collision mitigation, a lane-keeping system, and automatic high beams as part of its Safety Assist bundle of advanced driver aids.
The entry-level Trailblazer LS comes with 17” alloy wheels, black cloth upholstery, remote vehicle connectivity, and a 6-speaker stereo. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert can be added with a package.

LT models add black machine-finished wheels, keyless entry, heated side mirrors, and privacy glass. These models also come with a power-adjustable driver’s seat and the option for automatic climate control.

In ACTIV spec, the Trailblazer leans off-road with all-terrain tires, skids plates, a specially tuned suspension, and dual exhaust outlets for looks. Inside, content includes a heated steering wheel, white contrast stitching, and leather wrapping on the shifter.

Sporty RS Trailblazers come with 19” black wheels, black exterior trim, a Camaro-inspired front grille, and a cloth-leatherette upholstery design. Options include adaptive cruise control, LED headlights, and a wireless phone charging pad.
The 2024 Trailblazer LT is the model to go for as it adds features like heated seats and more optional packages for about $1,000 more than base models. But the Trailblazer’s biggest competition may be from its Trax stablemate.
Very similar in size, the Trax has the same base engine and a strong roster of content for thousands less. What you can’t get with the Trax is AWD or the 1.3L engine, but both mini SUVS come with the same 3 years of basic warranty coverage, 5 years on the powertrain and roadside assistance, and one service visit on the house.

Chevy’s Trailblazer has a lot going for it – good looks, affordable pricing, flexible cabin configurations, and strong technology offerings. The optional engine seems unnecessary as it only adds a smidge of power and this subcompact is clearly not designed to be a stoplight racer. So why bother?
On that front, if you’re going with the base engine, Chevrolet’s Trax makes a compelling reason to save some money and go that route. You could save even more money and look to the used Trailblazer market, but no matter which path you take, Chevy is clearly doing a good job with its small crossover portfolio.
The mid-size Blazer is larger than the subcompact Trailblazer.
