2023 Cadillac LYRIQ Powertrain

For the time being, every Lyriq you see on the road will consist of a single motor powering the rear wheels. It develops 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque in that configuration. Sometime next year, Cadillac will begin shipping a dual-motor version of the Lyriq with some 500 horsepower and a yet unspecified amount of torque. In its RWD form, the SUV can go up to 312 miles on a single charge.

While we await the chance to drive one of the AWD versions of the Lyriq we can already confirm that the RWD version is a joy to pilot. It’s not as quick as some of its counterparts but that’s not really the goal of the Lyriq. It’s meant to be luxurious, quiet, and stately. Those virtues are all here on display and we’re impressed at just how well-balanced this 5,610-pound SUV feels on the road.

The suspension does a nice job of soaking up poor road conditions while also remaining taut enough to provide good steering feedback. Braking is also impressive and for the most part, the accelerator pedal is solid too. The only small gripe we have is that even when mashing the Go pedal from a stop there seems to be a very gentle delay that other EVs don’t elicit. We hope the upcoming Blazer EV isn’t similar.

312 miles on a single charge is what the EPA says the Lyriq can do. Once it’s fitted with a dual-motor setup we expect a different figure but for now, we can say that the Lyriq is in the middle of the pack so to speak. The Audi e-Tron for example is short of that figure by some 90 miles while the Tesla Model Y Long Range goes a little further at 318 miles.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

This is undoubtedly the best interior that Cadillac has crafted in its long history. Even other excellent models from the brand have been filled with cheap plastic buttons and parts bin parts that could’ve come off of much cheaper vehicles in the family. None of that, and we mean none of it, is present in the Lyriq. From the way that the dash is laid out to the way that Cadillac has provided nothing but high-quality switchgear, we’re very impressed.

The seating is also excellent with great support and cushioning in addition to more space than one might expect. The rear seats are also spacious though we would love to see more features for these passengers like infotainment screens, heating, and ventilation. The cabin is very quiet too and that’s key not just because this is a luxury vehicle but also because it’s electric so road noise is amplified. To achieve that Cadillac added triple door seals and laminated glass.

Cargo space is another highlight as there are some 28 cubic feet behind the rear seats. While those seats won’t fold completely flat when down, there are 60.8 cubic feet which are positively cavernous compared to most cars in this class.

It’s impossible to miss the giant 33-inch infotainment screen that fills the Lyriq’s dashboard. It combines the driver’s display into the normal control panel and looks beautiful in practice. While the screen responds quickly to touches it’s not the most intuitive we’ve used. Nevertheless, we appreciate the inclusion of physical buttons and a control knob in the center console for those who prefer them. Individuals who are familiar with Mazda’s infotainment controls will be right at home with these. In addition, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both standard features. Finally, every single Lyriq comes with a 19-speaker AKG audio system which sounds fantastic.

Safety Features

Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has released any information about the safety of the Cadillac Lyriq. Despite that, we expect it to do well overall and are glad to see that it comes with a number of excellent standard safety features. These features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and more. The biggest issue we have with the Lyriq is that GM’s excellent SuperCruise technology is only available through a $25 per month subscription service.

Single Motor RWD – $62,990

Cadillac has yet to announce details on just what the 2023 Single Motor RWD trim level will feature. Expect it to come with everything included on the Debut Edition along with access to other features, wheels, paint colors, and more. What we do know is that it’ll use the same powertrain with the same power output as the Debut Model.

Dual Motor AWD – $64,990

Likewise, the brand hasn’t said anything about what exactly to expect from the Dual Motor AWD variant. While we don’t expect it to wear a V badge, we do know that it’ll make somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 combined horsepower.

Warranties

If there’s anything to be disappointed about with regard to the Lyriq it’s the standard warranty coverage. Every unit gets a four-year or 50,000-mile limited warranty and a six-year or 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. That’s better than some ICE vehicles but not up to par with other EVs in the space.

What we think

There’s no doubt that the new Cadillac Lyriq is a triumphant return to form for a brand that has been slowly making progress back to the upper echelon of automakers. This multifaceted EV offers practicality, luxury, comfort, and style at a price that we think is an absolute bargain. Getting on the list for a Lyriq can be tough but we think it’s well worth it if you’re searching for a vehicle of this size right now.
