The Chevy Chevelle is easily one of the most iconic American muscle cars ever built. Produced across three generations between 1964 and 1978, the Chevelle was offered in coupe, sedan, convertible, and station wagon form over the years. Everyone has their favorites, but it’s hard to argue with the hourglass side sculpting and big rear haunches found on the so-called Coke bottle models from the early 1970s. Like the in-your-face bright pink 1972 example.
It was the end of generation two Chevelles and the end of the golden age of muscle in America. But these steel-bodied brutes still packed a punch for 1972. The all-V8 lineup started with a classic Chevy 350 V8 and ranged up to the stonking 454 big block. It was also the final year for a cowl induction hood – like the one on today’s pink example– that was an option on 454 Chevelles. Little wonder that these Chevelles were one of the quickest muscle cars of the golden era.

Those who have driven, or sat shotgun, in one of these vintage Chevelles – Chevy’s rival to the best Mopar muscle cars – understand the allure of a rumbling, naturally aspirated American V8. The sounds, the feels, and the aromas of unignited gasoline are fairly intoxicating. Factor in plenty of room in the engine bay and rear wheel wells for serious aftermarket setups, and it’s no surprise that the Chevelle was, and still is, a favorite of the racing community. Which is what our 1972 example appears to be set up for.

Stripped of its emblems, we can’t be sure what model this pink beauty began life as, and details in the listing are scant. However, the available information certainly paints a picture of righteous American muscle thunder. In that color-matched engine bay sits a 406 stroker V8, an engine aimed at delivering big block torque from a small block starting point. As in 6.6 liters of displacement versus 5.7, which typically translates to anywhere from the low 400s to the high 500s in horsepower.
The 4.56 rear gears noted in the listing point to a preference for serious off-the-line speed with hard launches. Those who enjoy wild rubber-roasting smoke shows would surely appreciate what these gears and that engine represent (not that we condone such behavior). Add in the 3-speed reverse valve body and fat, 295 section-width rear tires – which translates to 11.6” of Nito NT555 summer performance rubber – and you have quite the setup for head-turning sound and, most likely, tremendously fast trap times. Fortunately, there is a set of Wilwood slotted and drilled brakes for modern stopping power.

Not to mention all the attention you can handle with that stunning pink paint job. Showing an indicated 56,000 miles and a cabin that appears to be largely original – aside from a big dash-mounted tach with shift lights – this 1972 Chevy Chevelle checks two major collector car boxes. One being the timeless appeal of a classic American muscle car and the other being an ability to satisfy those with the deepest need for speed.
