Tesla rolls out updates to its cars, including the Model S, periodically and for now, the 2025 car appears to be unchanged from last year’s Model S. However, that will surely change as the year progresses. In any case, this full-size sedan has been on sale since 2012.
During the intervening 13 years, it has received some refreshes, including a fairly comprehensive update back in 2021. A pioneer in the EV game, this Tesla is still a wickedly fast sedan with big-time driving range and ample technology, but the rest of the auto industry has started to catch up. Where the Model S goes from here is hard to predict, but it’s sure to be interesting.
T410-mile range
Blistering Plaid performance
Large cargo hold
Yoke steering device
Lack of smartphone mirroring
Less luxurious than the competition
An old EV that can still hang with the newcomers

In base All-Wheel Drive trim, the 2025 Model S comes with two electric motors, one for each axle, powered by a battery of unknown capacity. We do know horsepower comes in at 670, range measures 410 miles, and fuel efficiency is rated for 124 MPGe combined. It can also go from 0-60 in 3.1 seconds and add 205 miles of range in 15 minutes using a Supercharger.
Step up to the Plaid variant for a second rear motor, three total, and 1,020 hp. Like the base model, a direct-drive transmission routes the power, and when properly applied, you can crack 60 in less than 2 seconds, run the quarter mile in 9.2 seconds, and hit a 200-mph top speed, though Tesla has many asterisks around this latter claim. Range measures 368 miles for the Plaid, which earns 104 MPGe combined.
Thanks to its fastback design, the Model S can seat 5 and handle up to 28 cubic feet of cargo. Skipping the ritzy luxury typical of this price point, the Tesla goes the minimalist route, offering white, black, or cream-colored vegan leather upholstery with walnut or carbon fiber trim. It’s a clean look that is modernized with a wrap-around LED light strip for ambience.
Acoustic laminated windows and glass roof are included, as is active noise-cancelling technology to ensure a quiet cabin. As for creature comforts, climate-controlled front seats, heated rears, and a heated steering wheel are all standard. Physical buttons, however, are mostly not included and the awkward yoke steering gadget costs $1,000 extra.

Every 2025 Model S features a 12.3” digital instrument panel, a tilting 17.4” central touchscreen interface, and a 9.4” backseat display to keep passengers occupied. Tesla does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, instead relying on Bluetooth connectivity. Audiophiles should love the standard 22-speaker audio system in the Model S.
Basic Autopilot, which blends adaptive cruise control and lane centering, comes with both Model S trims, as does forward collision mitigation and blind-spot monitoring. Full Self-Driving remains a promise on the horizon, which you can enjoy thinking about for an extra $8,000. Regarding crash-test safety, the NHTSA does not have complete data on a recent Model S and the IIHS’s most recent test results date to 2021.

The entry-level Model S comes with 19” wheels, adaptive air suspension, and a hands-free trunk. Inside, you’ll find power-adjustable front seats, triple-zone automatic climate control, an all-glass roof, and wireless phone charging pads front and back.

Along with the increased performance, Plaid models feature a body kit, optional 21” wheels, sport seats, and carbon-ceramic brakes as part of the available Track package.
Exciting as the Plaid’s performance is, the base Tesla Model S is still plenty potent, offers impressive range, and costs $15,000 less, making it more appealing overall. Both variants embarrass newcomers like Toyota’s bZ range of EVs that can only manage about 260 miles of range, but stiffer competition comes in the form of the Lucid Air Pure.
That electric sedan undercuts the Model S by more than 10 grand, while delivering 10 more miles of driving range. On the warranty front, Tesla includes 4 years of basic coverage and 8 years on the battery and drive unit. There is no complimentary maintenance.

The EV arena has become more crowded since Tesla launched the Model S in 2012. Though still very capable and impressive from a range, performance, and technology perspective, there’s no denying the flagship Tesla is showing its age. Shiny, new things are always tough for the old guard to keep up with, regardless of industry.
But in the car industry, with glimmering techno-wizard rides like the Lucid Air and Porsche Taycan available, Tesla may have to consider a more comprehensive overhaul of the Model S to stay relevant. In the meantime, 410 miles or range is excellent and Spaceball-themed drag racers are neat.

The Model S Plaid goes from 0-60 in 1.99 seconds.
Tesla has made no announcements about a comprehensively redesigned Model S.
Using a Supercharger station, you can add 205 miles of range in 15 minutes to the base Model S.
