What do our experts think of the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe? We look at interior options, technology, cargo space, and more in our review.

What’s New for the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe?

The 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe is the brand’s bridge between the Traverse and the Suburban. It comes with three rows, three available engines, and six different trims to choose from. All benefit from plentiful cabin space, smooth drivetrains, and above-average interior comfort.

Chevrolet plans to refresh the Tahoe soon and as such it hasn’t made many changes to the 2024 model.

2024 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L V8 - carsforsale.com
2024 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L V8 - carsforsale.com

Chevrolet’s reliable 5.3-liter V8 engine is included as standard in all trims of the 2024 Tahoe, except for the High Country. It makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque and sends that power to the rear wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s dutiful and capable but don’t expect any sort of wow factor. The Tahoe offers above-average passing power but gets just 15 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway. The standard V8 also offers the most towing capacity, 8,400 pounds, available on the Tahoe.

The highest trim, the High Country, comes standard with a 6.2-liter V8 available on most other trims. It has 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque and is by far the most enjoyable to drive with. Pushing the throttle results in a quick response and eager behavior compared to the standard 5.3-liter engine. The High Country is worth it for those who love driving because it only gives up one mile per gallon in the city but matches the 5.3-liter engine’s fuel economy on the highway.

Finally, a 3.0-liter turbodiesel is also available as an option on most trims and comes with 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. It sips fuel compared to the other two and manages 21 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway. It also tows up to 8,200 pounds. Every Tahoe aside from the Z71 comes standard with rear-wheel drive but four-wheel drive is available. Every Tahoe except the High Country is available with a diesel engine.

What’s clear about the Tahoe is that regardless of engine choice, the ride will be that of a big heavy truck-based SUV. It’s slow to change direction, the body roll is evident before finding the handling limit, and so engagement isn’t a strong suit. The transmission is smooth though and long highway-based road trips are a breeze since the Tahoe soaks up bumps quite nicely.

2024 Chevrolet Tahoe Interior 8.5/10

Chevrolet offers exceptional cabin space in the Tahoe. Buyers who prioritize headroom and legroom will love the expansive interior that offers room to stretch out a bit in all three rows. The seating is supportive and comfortable but lacks the lateral bolstering that some rivals offer.

The second-row slides forward and back which enables a bit of modularity when it comes to carrying adults or kids in the third row. Cargo space is plentiful too with over 25 cubic feet of storage space behind the passengers. Fold the seats down and that space expands to over 100 cubic feet.

At the same time, the entire cabin suffers from materials and details that feel decidedly down-market of this vehicle’s $58,000 starting price. Cheap plastic is all over the place. The buttons look no more advanced, polished, or special than those from a Tahoe built several years ago. Even the High Country with its leather upholstery isn’t impressive when compared to other SUVs priced near $80,000. For example, the Jeep Wagoneer has a slightly higher starting price but it feels worth every penny in the cabin. The Tahoe just does enough to get by.

2024 Chevrolet Tahoe Technology Features 7.75/10

2024 Chevrolet Tahoe - chevrolet.com
2024 Chevrolet Tahoe - chevrolet.com

Technology hasn’t been a strong suit for Chevrolet’s mainstream vehicles for a while and the Tahoe is a good example of why. The base model gets a tiny 8-inch infotainment system that works fine but feels very dated. Every other trim level employs a 10.2-inch infotainment system that looks better and feels better but still isn’t a leader in terms of size or features. Even the Traverse puts it to shame with a 17.7-inch screen.

Still, we appreciate that it’s easy to use and that it comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity along with a standard Wi-Fi hotspot. Buyers who want additional tech will have to pony up even more cash though. That’s fine for features like a pair of 12.6-inch infotainment screens for the second row but it’s a real letdown in terms of safety.

Adaptive cruise control for example is only standard on the most expensive Tahoe. Blind-spot warning, rear automatic braking, and rear cross-traffic alert all require one to buy higher trim levels or pay more on top of other trims too.

Chevrolet does offer safety features like lane-departure mitigation, forward collision mitigation, and parking sensors as standard. The Premier and High Country trims levels have optional Super Cruise driver technology which offers some autonomous driving features like automatic lane change assist. The Tahoe hasn’t been tested by the NHTSA nor the IIHS but hasn’t won any awards for safety in recent years.

2024 Chevrolet Tahoe Overall Value 8/10

Judging the value of the Chevy Tahoe is tough because the segment isn’t exactly the most innovative. Rivals from Nissan, Ford, and Dodge haven’t exactly set the bar very high; so somewhat by default, the Tahoe is near the top. It does offer excellent interior space, above-average engines, and a smooth ride. At the same time, it’s pretty pricey. Even with new car incentives, this SUV will cost someone who leases a Tahoe almost $800 a month before insurance. We highly suggest cross-shopping the Tahoe with a Jeep Wagoneer.

The Tahoe is set for an update soon and we expect it to address most of the issues noted above. Chevrolet has proven that it can jazz up an interior pretty easily with the Trax and the Traverse. Next, we’d call for a full suite of safety tech including adaptive cruise, lane-centering assist, and blind spot warning as standard equipment. Those potentially life-saving features should be on every Tahoe going forward.
