Cool Car Find: 1984 Chevy El Camino

This 1984 Chevrolet El Camino sits in stunning condition and might have a very rare aftermarket design package on it.

What is it

This 1984 Chevrolet El Camino looks like a stunning example of a survivor. It combines the classic two-door pickup truck sports car body of this model with a desirable 5.7-liter V8 and a blend of chrome and red. This is part of the fifth generation of the El Camino and it’s one of the most refined of the model. It’s closely related to the equally classic Chevy Malibu and that’s one reason that the front bumper looks so similar to that model.

Unfortunately, the seller hasn’t disclosed anything about the car on the listing so we’ll have to break down what we can see in photos. Thankfully, the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words proves true here. Let’s take a look at this stunning old-school classic car for which there is no modern-day replacement.

The outside of this classic El Camino looks phenomenal. It features a dark red paint that’s likely the original Light Maple Metallic available in 1984. If we’re seeing that right, it makes this El Camino all the rarer as Light Maple Metallic wasn’t available any other year. Stainless steel sits below the main layer of paint giving this two-door a two-tone effect.

Chrome is everywhere on this El Camino too. That includes gorgeous five-spoke chrome wheels with Cooper Cobra tires wrapped around them. Inside those wheels, you’ll note that this El Camino features four-wheel disc brakes. The seller has also included photos of the underside of the car to demonstrate its excellent condition. The bushings, shocks, springs, and other suspension parts look to be in excellent shape for a car that’s nearly 40 years old.

While the outside of this El Camino might be a beautiful light Maple, the interior is full of deep rich red cloth and leather upholstery. The driver’s seat features power adjustment through chrome control switches. The dash, door cards, gauge cluster, and center control stack all look phenomenal for their age.

Take a quick look out back at the bed and you’ll find a storage area that looks as though it’s almost never been used. Chrome rails sit atop each side of the bed while chrome trim sits at both ends of the bed to complete the styling properly. The sunroof allows for a bit of natural light in the cabin as well.

On the right side of the dash, you’ll notice a small train with the inscription CCC Inc. That seems to indicate that this is a Choo Choo Customs finished car though again, without a description from the seller, we can’t confirm that. Choo Choo Customs El Caminos are known for their burgundy interior seats, hood scoops, side skirts, and other aesthetic changes.

Engine

Under the hood of this El Camino is a 5.7-liter V8 which was only optional in 1984. That adds a little more desirability to this example as most from 1984 feature a 4.3-liter V6. As is, the 84’ V8 was rated for 250 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque making it a punchy performer. That power is somewhat neutered by an automatic three-speed transmission.

Thankfully, it’s still rear-wheel drive which should make for some tail-happy fun for this El Camino’s next owner. Again, we don’t have any information from the seller but it’s clear to see that this car features an aftermarket intake filter and a reasonably clean engine bay. Choo Choo Customs didn’t do any performance part or engine work so there’s no benefit should this be a genuine CCC car.

This classic 1984 Chevrolet El Camino is sitting at Streetside Classic Cars in Mesa, Arizona for $20,995. That’s slightly above average for a car with 82,623 miles on the odometer but it’s rare to find one that is as clean and pretty as this one. Small touches like the chrome, the hood, and the side decals make it just that much more desirable.

If this truly is a Choo Choo Customs El Camino it’s likely one of less than 3,000 ever produced. Even if it’s not, it’s a wildly cool two-door utility vehicle in aesthetically fantastic condition. We hope its next owner takes as good of care of it as its previous ones clearly have.
