GOAT-Level Automotive Taste

Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time, and as such one of the most famed and revered athletes of all time. Naturally, Jordan’s taste in cars has been similarly superlative as his collection has contained some of the most beautiful, fastest, and most expensive cars money can buy.

Jordan’s collection of cars starts off modestly, a C4 Chevrolet Corvette. Then a league rookie and just 21 years old, Jordan received the Corvette as part of his very first endorsement deal with a local Chicago Chevy dealer. This car carried one of the first of Jordan’s many vanity plates, in this case JUMP23. This wasn’t the last of Jordan’s fruitful endorsement deals nor his last Corvette. In 1993, he bought a new 40th-anniversary C5 Corvette ZR1 to celebrate the Bulls’ “three-peat” championship run.

This striking Porsche, a Slant nose 930 cabriolet, was influential in Jordan’s most significant endorsement deal, his partnership with Nike. The 930 Slant nose was the inspiration for the Air Jordan VI, the pop-up headlights and whale tail spoiler giving the high tops their signature proportions.

1989 Ferrari Testarossa

The Ferrari Testarossa was about as cool as it got for sports cars in the late 1980s. While Sonny Cockett drove a white one in Miami Vice, Jordan chose the classic Rosso Corsa red for his. This was the car that Jordan was famously arrested for speeding in, doing 90 mph in a 60-mph zone. That’s still only half of the Testarossa’s top speed of 180 mph.

1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello

Like the Porsche Slant nose, Jordan’s Ferrari 550 Maranello, along with the Ferrari 335, provided the inspiration for another sneaker design, in this case the Air Jordan XIV. The XIV is shoe MJ wore in his final game as a Chicago Bull, sinking his final shot in the closing seconds to top the Utah Jazz and earning the GOAT his 6th championship.

Jordan’s flair for eye-catching vanity plates gave this incredible car an appropriately distinctive moniker, AIR. The Turbo S was the top-flight Porsche 911 of its day, boasting 424 horsepower and blistering zero-to-sixty time of just 3.6 seconds.

2005 Bentley Continental GT

Jordan’s love of Ferraris and Porsche make clear his affinity for fast cars, but it’s also clear he enjoyed the simpler pleasures of ultra-luxurious grand tourers like his 2005 Bentley Continental GT. The car’s exquisite, quilted leather upholstery influenced yet another Air Jordan sneaker, the XXI.

2007 McLaren-Mercedes SLR 722

Merely being fast or fancy was clearly not enough for the six-time champion. Rarity also has its allure for Jordan when he purchased a McLaren-Mercedes SLR 722. The SLR was an incredible collaboration between two of Europe’s best performance carmakers. Of course, Jordan chose the rarer and more powerful version, the 722 (named after Serling Moss’s 1955 Mille Miglia-winning car) with an output of 641 horsepower from its supercharged 5.4L V8.

Car collecting can lead to escalating expectations. Case in point, Jordan’s purchase of a Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir (Black Blood). This special edition Veyron saw just twelve examples built, including one for the rapper Drake. The car’s Art Deco styling harkens back to the Bugattis of old like the Type 57C Atlantic. The car’s engine, however, was cutting-edge. The mind-bending W16 was quad turbocharged, produced over 1,000 horsepower, and helped the Veyron set a world record production car top speed of 253 mph.

Jordan’s commitment to motorsports was made official when he sponsored his own NASCAR team, making it the first majority black owned team. Driver Bubba Wallace is the winningest African American driver in NASCAR history, doing it from behind the wheel of car number 23. Of his NASCAR sponsorship Jordan said, “Historically, NASCAR has struggled with diversity. I see this as a chance to educate a new audience and open more opportunities for black people in racing.”

2023 Hennessy Venom F5 Roadster

Automotive technology might march on but Michael Jordan’s affinity for speed has remained consistent. This helps explain one of his latest purchases, a Hennessy Venom F5 Roadster. This hypercar features a twin-turbo 6.6L V8 with a stratospheric 1,817 horsepower to its name. With a top speed of 270 mph, the Venom F5 Roadster is the fastest convertible in the world. If you’ve ever wondered how all-time legend Michael Jordan still gets his thrills after the bright lights of the court have long since dimmed, the answer is driving … very … darn … fast.
