Ford has been having a rough year when it comes to recalls. They lead all manufacturers with a total of 25 recalls so far in 2025. Ford isn’t alone however, GM has had six recalls so far this year, the latest relating to their ten-speed transmissions. In both cases and for many other manufacturers, production problems seeded back during the pandemic-era are germinating years later in the form of wide-ranging recalls.
According to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), GM is recalling 90,081 vehicles equipped with their ten-speed transmission. These included all thusly equipped 2020-22 model year Chevrolet Camaros as well as 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6s and 2020-21 Cadillac CT4s and CT5s. Those vehicles with other transmissions than the ten-speed automatic are not subject to recall.
The issue relates to a possible transmission control valve wear which can lead to fluid leakage, a reduction in pressure, and subsequent harsh shifting. Those harsh shifts can cause momentary wheel lockup, increasing the risk of an accident.
GM says they will be updating the transmission control module software to detect for excessive wear and that if detected the transmission will limit itself to the fifth gear and enter a limp mode (GM says lock ups are occurring when the transmission downshifts from eight gear). As always with recalls, the cost of repairs are covered by the manufacturer.
Letters to affected owners are scheduled to go out mid-April. Chevrolet’s customer service number is 1-800-222-1020. Cadillac’s customer service number is 1-800-333-4223.
Ford’s latest spate of recalls encompasses a substantial number of vehicles that were the subjects of prior recalls and are being recalled once more as prior recall fixes were incorrectly implemented. One of these involves the trailering software of 10,627 pickups and SUVs. These include the 2020-21 model year F-150 as well as 2022 Ford Heavy Duty pickups, Ford Expedition, Ford Maverick, and Lincoln Navigator.
The recall addresses an incompatibility between vehicles’ trailering software and trailers equipped with electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes that can cause poor trailer brake performance. This problem was the subject of a prior recall wherein dealers were to install a software patch, but the software tool provided by Ford did not implement the correct software. Owners will now need to take their trucks back to dealers to have the correct software installed. Letters to owners are scheduled to go out April 14th.
Roughly 64,000 Ford vehicles were re-recalled this past week. These include 49,399 vehicles encompassing 2020-23 Lincoln Aviators and Corsairs and Ford Explorers for rearview camera malfunctions that were the subject of a prior recall. The 2021-22 Ford Edge, a total of 2,290 units, have also been re-recalled for similar rearview camera problems.
12,835 units of the 2021-24 model year Ford Bronco Sports and 2022-23 Ford Mavericks were also recalled for a second time to address problems related to the powertrain control module not properly communicating with the vehicles’ 12-volt battery system which could lead to a loss of power.
The 2021-22 model year Ford EcoSport, some 18,648 units, were also recalled for possible disconnecting half shafts which could result in a loss of motive power.
