Literally the cars that dreams are made of, these concept cars are everything you want, need, and possibly don’t want but think are cool. Here’s a list of some of the coolest concept cars over the last few years that have made an impression on us.

There’s Nothing Quite Like A Concept

A concept car in the past has usually been a vehicle that comes to fruition after many years of designing behind the scenes, but a concept car in today’s age is anything you want it to be. No, really. Concept cars are no longer just about testing the waters. They’re much more like an artist’s tapestry or a sculptor’s clay. They show exactly what car manufacturers are capable of in an outlandish and impractical way. But isn’t that what all car lovers are about?

Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak

Volkswagen doesn’t currently have a pickup, but maybe it will in the future. This concept vehicle is a combination of the Atlas and a pickup truck. Exactly what we have all tried and seen, but not exactly succeeded in. Volkswagen deems this concept as a “progressive pickup” with a V6 engine built on the modular transverse toolkit or MQB. This design was debuted at the 2018 New York International Auto Show. Named after a tree found on the Pacific Coast, we’re not sure if this idea will grow into something real or just remain a tiny sapling of an idea.

Suzuki Hanare

Ever wanted a home on wheels that drove itself? Well, Suzuki has designed one. Hanare, which means detached cottage in Japanese, is a room that drives on its own. As autonomous driving continues to progress, we may not be far from self-driving cars, but this design is a little different. With no steering wheel or driver’s seat, this mobile room can be driven from the front or back of the vehicle. Inside, a mini living room awaits with movable seating arrangements. Cool or weird? Either way, it’s out there now.

Suzuki Waku SPO

Alongside the Hanare, Suzuki also released another concept, the Waku SPO. This tiny coupe is as adorable as the word Waku sounds. Though the outside has futuristic styling, the design itself resembles a vintage coupe that takes us back to the good old days. This plug-in hybrid features two rear-facing cameras instead of side mirrors and can transform its body shape with a click of a button. Many have likened the Waku SPO to Honda’s new Honda e, which is set to hit markets in 2020.

Hyundai Vision T Plugin

The Hyundai Vision T is a slightly bigger, hybrid version of what many believe to be the Hyundai Tucson. Though not much has been revealed in terms of specs for this concept, Hyundai showcased this particular concept as a way to show where the company is headed when designing urban adventure cars. Some have said that this concept may already be making its way into production as spy shots have been taken of a similar-looking vehicle, but no peeps have been heard about it from the manufacturer. Some nifty aesthetics include fancy light sequences and some very large, but intriguing wheels.

Subaru VIZIV Adrenaline

A sleeker version of the Subarus we love and know today jacked up on Bridgestone tires. That’s what the Adrenaline is. Something like an Impreza and a Crosstrek molded into one, the Adrenaline is a little more aggressive in design than Subaru fans are used to. Subaru isn’t giving much away about this concept, but it sure does fit their new style, rightly named “Bolder,” as they move forward with their next generation of vehicles.

Aston Martin Lagonda All-Terrain

The Lagonda has been estimated to hit markets in 2022, but for now, it’s still in concept mode. This luxury crossover isn’t just meant for the posh and premiere, but also for those who like to live a little on the edge and wild side. The exterior design looks like something you’d find on the set of Alien vs. Predator with its protruding backside, but the inside is as minimalist as it gets. Lagonda, no matter what shape this vehicle takes, will be an electric-only brand and this concept is expected to hit 300 miles before coming back to the plug for extra juice.

Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 Cabriolet

In all the movies about the future and opulence in the last decade, the MercedesMaybach Vision 6 Cabriolet (Yes, that’s its name. Please don’t wear it out.) is exactly what we’ve expected. A futuristic Gatsby-esque styled convertible that will fly you to your office each day is indeed what the world has been waiting on. For some reason, we still believe people will go into the office for work instead of doing work from home in the future, but that’s a story for another time. The Vision 6 Cabriolet is truly a remarkable specimen of what life will be like for the rich and famous in the future. Sleek curves, thoughtful lighting, and enough chrome to make the dollars fall out of your wallet without even realizing it. Going 0-60 in 4 seconds and 200 miles of range before needing a charge, this beautiful, very expensive vehicle is one that we will happily see come to life. Even if we only get to see it from afar.

Genesis Essentia

A sports car made classy, but make it electric and orange, too. The Genesis Essentia is one good-looking sports car that was designed to “connect complete with its driver and the world around it.” On the outside, the sleek and dark body is truly a force to be reckoned with. Inside, you’ll find a brighter (very orange) interior that makes you want to get behind the wheel and go fast. No specs are out for this concept, but it does look pretty darn cool.

Honda Sports EV

Another beautifully crafted sports car concept is the Honda Sports EV. Shown alongside the Honda e, the Sports EV is not just a handsome concept. Its creators believe it will be a vehicle that’s a heck of a lot of fun to drive with a lot of Honda e concepts included. Though the original concept of this car had a deep hood design, Honda is expecting to make that space a small, shallow compartment to carry a bit more in what is expected to be a two-seater sports car. This car is a concept car for now, but Honda is expected to push it to production shortly after the Honda e hits the roads in Europe and Asia.

Toyota FT-4X

The most exciting, for me anyway, is the Toyota FT-4X concept. This concept is truly one-of-a-kind and transforms into any anywhere adventure vehicle. Inside, you’ll find a handful of gadgets that are made to stay and go whenever you need them. Your car stereo turned handheld speaker, a takeaway light, a trunk inside the trunk (Uh, yes please!), and water bottles that are built into the car? I mean, honestly, for an adventurer it’s clear that your money belongs in the hands of Toyota. Coming to streets near you in soon, this compact SUV is not meant to just stay concept. Take my money, Toyota!

Dreams Do Come True

If the auto industry tells us anything with these concepts, it’s that dreams do come true. Even if they aren’t for sale to the general public. These concept cars are all unique, but they teach us something every time a new one is debuted. Concepts, dreams, and ideas have a way of coming to life if you give them a chance. And that my friends, is why we love the car business.
