With the debut of the GMC Sierra EV for 2024, the mid-range General Motors brand now has two electric-powered pickup trucks to choose from. The GMC Hummer EV pickup arrived back in 2022 and for 2024, nearly matches the Sierra EV with a starting price of $98,845 for a 2X model versus $99,495 for the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 – currently the only variant for sale.
So, what’s the difference between these two GMC pickups running the automaker’s Ultium platform? We’ll dive deeper below, but essentially the Hummer is an Extreme brodozer. While the Sierra is a tailored luxury fellow, the Johnnie Walker Blue Label to its bonkers brother.
Currently, the 2024 Sierra EV only comes with a 205-kWh battery and two electric motors, one for each axle, that are powered by direct-drive transmissions. Output tops out at 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, but that requires pressing a hammer icon in the touchscreen menu to activate the literally named Max Power mode. GM is currently mum on what those figures look like in less exciting Standard mode.
With the 2024 Hummer EV pickup, GMC employs the same basic battery platform but offers a 2X model with dual motors – front and rear – or the 3X that adds a second motor to the rear axle. The two-motor setup is good for 570 horsepower, while the tri-motor jumps to 1,000 hp as long as “Watts to Freedom” mode is engaged. In what seems to be a marketing gimmick based on non-standard mathematics, GMC quotes torque figures at 7,400 and 11,500 lb-ft, respectively, for these Hummers.
Both electric GMC pickups have a 19.2 kW onboard charging module and the ability to drain a DC fast charging outlet to the tune of 100 miles of range in 10 minutes thanks to a max 350 kW charge rate, something you can learn more about here. Efficiency figures for the Sierra have not yet been published, but the Hummer is rated for up to 53 MPGe combined and the related Chevy Silverado EV comes in at 63 MPGe combined, so the Sierra is likely to be within that range. Speaking of, GMC claims a 440-mile driving range for the Sierra and a max of 381 miles for the Hummer EV 3X.
Both of these electrified trucks come with four-wheel steering, adaptive air suspension, and staggering curb weights – 8,800 pounds for the Sierra EV and nearly 10,000 for the Hummer EV 3X. But, thanks to the physics-defying ways of EV powertrains, the 2024 Sierra EV can go from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds per GMC, while the Hummer EV can do the run in just 3.3 seconds.
As for towing, the 2024 Hummer EV boasts up to 12,000 pounds with the 2X model or 8,500 pounds in the 3X. The Sierra EV splits the difference with a 10,000-pound rating. Both trucks come with one-pedal driving capability, variable battery regeneration, and the wacky CrabWalk mode for driving diagonally. However, the Sierra comes with the bigger wheels of the duo at a whopping 24 inches, while only the Hummer can offer an “Extract” mode for jacking the suspension up an extra 6 inches.
For those planning to take their six-figure electric toys, er, pickup trucks off-road, the 2024 Hummer is clearly the better option. As long as you tick the $9,995 option box for the Extreme Off-Road package. Adding an extra helping of extremeness, it brings skid plates, locking differentials, heavy-duty half shafts, underbody cameras, and 35” all-terrain rubber.
The luxury versus extreme intergalactic space pod difference between these two GMC EVs becomes clearer in the cabins. With the Sierra, it’s an elegant mix of diamond-quilted leather with embossed logos, grain-matched open-pore wood trim, and stainless-steel speaker grilles. The all-glass roof is fixed and the leather is simply black.
Over at Hummer, you can choose from Lunar Shadow or Lunar Horizon themes with big, chunky bronze accents and speaker grilles featuring lunar topography maps. Heck, the roof even comes off in 4 big panels bro! The Hummer does include niceties like climatized front seats, heated rears, and automatic climate control, but it’s quite a bit more in-your-face from a style perspective.
Both of these GMC pickups come as crew cabs only, but the Sierra EV leans further into traditional pickup territory with a bed that measures 5’ 10” in length versus the 5’ 0” Hummer bed. Plus, the Sierra has a MidGate feature – just like the old-school Avalanche – that flips down the rear bulkhead and opens up the overall length of the cargo bed to 10’ 10”. Something these electric pickups share is a weatherproof front trunk with a power-operated release.
The single trim currently offered on the 2024 GMC Sierra EV is the Denali Edition 1. It’s fully-loaded with an 11” digital gauge cluster, a portrait-oriented 16.8” central touchscreen, a 14” color head-up display, a 7-speaker Bose audio system, and a wireless phone charging pad. However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not currently offered on the Sierra.
Those smartphone mirroring systems are standard on the 2024 GMC Hummer EV, which differentiates the 2X and 3X trims by powertrain rather than features. Standard content includes a 12.3” all-digital instrument panel, a landscape-oriented 13.4” infotainment interface, Google built-in, and a Bose 14-speaker stereo system. SuperCruise, the automaker’s hands-free driving tech currently compatible with some 750,000 miles of North American roads, is included on both trucks.
In this showdown of $100,000 electric pickup trucks, it’s hard to imagine a world where either option becomes a hot-selling game-changer given the staggering asking price and comical inefficiency of such incredibly huge vehicles. That said, it’s easy to choose the GMC Sierra EV over its Hummer EV brother.
Does the Hummer offer faster 0-60 times and more theater than the Sierra? It sure does. Which would make it an ideal vehicle for use as a toy or to show off at your local Cars and Coffee. But it’s so cartoonish as to be absurd. 11,500 pound-feet of torque and “Watts to Freedom” mode? Groan.
The GMC Sierra EV offers between 60 and 130 more miles of driving range than the Hummer, depending on spec, with effectively the same powertrain and doesn’t look like a silly spaceship on 4 wheels doing it. Plus, the cabin is legitimately luxurious. The best bet, though, may be waiting for the lower-priced GMC Sierra EV variants said to be coming next year. And of course, don’t miss the Ford F-150 Lighting and Rivian R1T for even more options.
