2020 Hyundai Palisade Powertrain

Hyundai keeps things simple on the Palisade powertrain front with a single engine and transmission. Making 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, the naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 is hooked up to an 8-speed automatic. Using shift-by-wire tech for the transmission frees up space beneath the center console bridge for storage. There are also steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters if you want to handle gear selection.

A front-wheel drive vehicle, the Palisade offers an HTRAC AWD system with driver-selectable modes for Normal, Sport, Smart and Snow. Sport will push more torque to the rear wheels and the differentials can be locked when the traction gets especially squirrelly.

Driving at night is easier with the standard high beam assist and available HUD. Automatically toggling the brights on and off based on traffic conditions takes the hassle away from the driver while the HUD offers important vehicle info just below the driver’s eye level without blinding them.

Towing & Payload

All Palisades are ready to tow up to 5000 pounds thanks to a standard transmission cooler, trailer pre-wiring and trailer sway control. You’ll need the Convenience package on SEL models to access a self-leveling suspension feature though standard lineup equipment like electronic stability control and vehicle stability management are boons to trailering activities. Hill start assist and the optional downhill brake control further driver confidence when towing with the Palisade.

2020 Hyundai Palisade Fuel Economy & MPG

2020 Hyundai Palisades are equipped with start-stop technology while idling and yet, the EPA estimates for city driving cannot crack 20 mpg. Both FWD and AWD drivetrain achieve 19 mpg around town. The front-wheel drive models are estimated to hit 26 miles per gallon on the highway. That figure falls to 24 for AWD Palisades.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

Hyundai put a lot of work into the Palisade comfort side of things. Acoustic laminated glass is used on the windshield and front windows to keep noise levels down. If that’s not working, the Driver Talk in-car intercom system provides drivers – but especially parents – the joy of barking commands to second and third-row occupants. All of whom should have little to whine about given heated and ventilated second row seating. Not to mention the roof-based diffuser vents which allow variable volumes of outside air to flow through the third row.

Second row seating can be folded out the way with one-touch button operation while the third row can be power folded/unfolded and even reclined. With both rows stowed, the 2020 Hyundai Palisade can be stacked with 86 cubic feet of your stuff. The height adjustable power liftgate makes this work easy and a cubby under the rear cargo flow is great for muddy, wet gear.

Entertainment & Technology

Apple and Android smartphone software is standard across the Palisade lineup along with seven USB ports throughout the cabin. A standard 8” touchscreen controls vehicle functions though a 10.25” version comes on Limited models or with an SEL trim package. Stepping up to Limited trim also brings a Qi wireless charging pad, HUD and navigation. A 630-watt Harman-Kardon with 12 speakers is sure to keep audiophiles happy.

All Palisades are delivered with three years of complimentary Hyundai Blue Link services. This suite of connectivity features remote engine start with climate control settings, remote door lock/unlock, a car finder, enhanced roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle recovery help.

Safety Features

NHTSA’s 5-star rating and the IIHS Top-Safety Pick award given to the Palisade are achieved from a combination of robust passive safety and a litany of driver-aids. Seven airbags cover first row occupants from the front and side, the driver’s knees and the heads of passengers in all three rows via a rollover sensing side curtain.

A driver attention monitor, lane following assist and forward collision avoidance are standard safety aids. Blind spot collision avoidance and safe exist assist require SEL trim or higher. An optional ultrasonic rear-occupant alert will honk the horn and send phone alerts if the vehicle is locked and the overhead ultrasonic sensors detect movement in the back seats.

SE – $31,975

Filling in the entry-level role, Palisade SE packs plenty of amenities like an 8” touchscreen infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Physical control buttons are also on hand. A second row bench allows for seating up to eight, on cloth upholstery, as leather is not an option at this price point.

In fact, the only option on SE models is AWD, which adds $1700. None of the Palisade packages can be selected here but a high level of safety-focused features comes standard. Among more typical systems, these days, is forward collision avoidance, smart cruise, and lane keeping assist. Less common is a rear occupant alert that notifies drivers, via the gauge cluster, to check the back seat based on embedded sensors.

SEL – $33,925

For a more upmarket look, SEL owners can select second row captain’s chairs at no cost. A leather steering wheel is included and the $2400 Premium package adds leather seating. It also brings LED headlights, a heated second row and steering wheel, plus power-operated fold/unfold/recline functionality to the third row.

Occupant comfort is a given with SEL standard features like a power adjustable driver’s seat, heated front cushions, and dual zone climate control. For more bells and whistles, the Convenience package nets 20” wheels, auto-levelling rear suspension, a 7” digital instrument panel, and more for $2200.

Limited – $45,125

Like the SE, Limited models offer no packages. However, a Palisade Limited includes every single option so it’s a moot point. Like all Palisades, AWD can be added to this top-level trim for $1700.

The Limited gauge cluster is a fully digital 12” screen, juxtaposed by a centrally located 10” touchscreen display. The look is sleek and modern, befitting the $45,000 price tag. Drivers also benefit from a head-up display (HUD) and the included navigation with traffic information.

Quilted Nappa leather dresses up the seats, which are ventilated up front, and in the second-row captain’s thrones – the only configuration available here. A dual panel sunroof, 12-speaker Harman-Kardon audio system, and Qi wireless charging pad fill out the ample Limited spec sheet.

Warranties

Hyundai built its reputation on their vehicle warranty and the 2020 Palisade continues that trend with 10 years or 100,000 miles of coverage on the powertrain. 5 years or 60,000 miles is the limited vehicle warranty term and corrosion is covered for 7 years and unlimited miles. Roadside assistance is included for 5 years and complimentary scheduled maintenance is part of the deal for 3 years or 36,000 miles.

What we think

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade is worth considering simply from the perspective that it doesn’t look like every other SUV on the market. When you combine it’s styling with the high level of amenities, luxury trappings, serious safety engineering and of-the-moment tech, it’s a very compelling proposition.
