The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer resurrects a storied nameplate and promptly sends it to the top of the Jeep heap. Will consumers bite at its serious luxury proposition?
Expected in dealerships later this year, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer resurrects the brand’s nameplate while positioning it as a premium extension to the Jeep lineup. It will be joined by a Grand Wagoneer which promises even higher levels of luxury, but that is effectively a separate model. This new Wagoneer will be 10” longer than the recently introduced Grand Cherokee L and thus takes its “American Premium” place at the top of Jeep’s brand hierarchy. Three rows are standard, high levels of luxury, and buff good looks define the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer. Consumers will also find an entry price point of $70,000, which is new territory for Jeep, but it looks like this big new bruiser is worth it.

One engine is available with the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, Stellantis’ familiar 5.7-liter V8. It makes 392 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque here and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Standard drivetrain setup is rear-wheel drive, but four-wheel drive is an option for $3000. The new Wagoneer is a body-on-frame architecture with four-corner independent suspension.
Load-leveling functionality on the rear suspension is standard and will alter shock pressure based on current suspension load. Stepping up to Series III trim nets the Quadra-Lift air suspension system that continuously adjusts stiffness based on loading conditions to optimize ride performance.
Selec-Terrain lets drivers choose their preferred drive mode from Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Sand/Mud options. Though the 2022 Wagoneer will be expensive, it will not forgo Jeep’s trademark off-road chops. The Advanced All-Terrain package adds 18” wheels on knobby off-road tires, a two-speed transfer case, skid plates, and Selec-Speed to the drive-mode selector. That last feature allows for low-speed crawling with hill descent control while Quadra-Lift offers up to 10” of ground clearance.
In any configuration, a 2022 Wagoneer can handle 10,000 pounds of towing and a 1500-pound payload. However, the Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow package needs to be optioned to hit these figures. For Series I trim, that runs $995 and adds a Class IV receiver, 3.92 rear axle ratio, e-LSD, heavy-duty engine cooling, trailer-brake controller, and added rear camera tech. With the Series II, package pricing is $1495 because it adds an in-vehicle safe to the list of features.
EPA estimates for 2022 Wagoneer fuel efficiency have not yet been released, but there are several technologies in place to wring as much economy as possible from each gallon of gas. The 48-volt, eTorque mild hybridization is a motor-generator that can capture energy with brake regeneration and allow for smooth stop-start functionality. Active grille shutters are in use as is the Multi-Displacement System that deactivates cylinders as necessary to improve efficiency.
However, the Wagoneer weighs in at nearly three-tons and its Grand Wagoneer stablemate only achieves 13 mpg in the city and 18 on the highway. Granted, that model runs on the larger 6.4-liter V8, but don’t expect tremendous fuel efficiency with the Wagoneer.
The new Wagoneer’s XL dimensions are on display with 43” of second row legroom and 37” in the third row. All occupants benefit from acoustic glass on the windshield and front windows plus active noise control and ambient interior lighting.
Drivers will appreciate standard heated and ventilated seats swaddled in Nappa leather with power adjustability. As well, the side mirrors are heated, feature auto-dimming, and tilt-down when in reverse. Middle and rear seat passengers have the ability to slide and recline while there are optional, heated captain’s chairs to replace the middle bench.
The new Wagoneer is a regular parade of tech with more than 30” of digital real estate across the dashboard. A digital gauge cluster is standard as is a central touchscreen. An optional 10” passenger-facing display offers co-pilot control of media and navigation.
Devices will stay powered thanks to wireless charging, dual USB ports front and back, 115-volt power, and a trio of 12V plugs. Which is necessary considering the Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto software. Over-The-Air updates are in place, navigation is included and an available 19-speaker McIntosh sound system promises concert quality sound.
All new Wagoneers are outfitted with adaptive cruise control with lane management, blind spot monitoring with cross path detection, and forward collision warning. The backup camera features a lens washer and emergency notifications are sent in the event of a crash. Airbags are housed for frontal, front side, and full-length curtain accident conditions and a rear-seat reminder is standard. The Convenience package adds a driver attention monitor, intersection collision assistance, active parking, and 360-degree camera views.
There will be a Series I model, but it will be “late availability” and is not currently available to give a full run down or price.
With a high staring price comes a high level of standard features for the Series II Wagoneer. Outside, 20” rims are complimented by the full LED lighting treatment, side-step bars and a roof rack. 22-inchers are optional as are a set of 18” wheels if you opt for 4-wheel-drive.
Nappa leather covers the inside with heat and ventilation on front seats and a heated steering wheel. Triple-zone, automatic climate control is included, but you’ll need the $2995 Premium package for that triple-pane sunroof. The standard second row bench has power-operated tilt and slide function plus manual recline while the third row features manual fold and recline.
The 10.25” digital gauge cluster sits next to the 10” infotainment touchscreen featuring Uconnect 5 tech. It handles wireless Apple and Android smartphone integration, navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 9-speaker Alpine stereo system. A host of active-safety systems include adaptive cruise control, active lane management, and full speed forward-collision warning.
The top-spec, Series III brings Quadra-Lift air suspension and painted 20” rims plus automatic high beams and a heads-up display. As well, wayback seating fold/recline is power operated and the second row picks up heated outboard positions.
With the Series III, additional trim-exclusive package amenities are available. The $5495 Premium package adds a McIntosh audio system with 19 components, 22” wheels, the full-length moonroof, and power-deployable running boards.
A rear-seat entertainment package brings dual, 10” screens for $995 and the $1495 Heavy-Duty Trailer package adds an in-vehicle safe along with a trailer brake controller and electronic limited-slip rear differential (e-LSD). Ticking 4×4 and all the packages pushes a Wagoneer Series III to $91,000.
The basic vehicle warranty for the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer runs for 3 years or 36,000 miles. Powertrain components are covered for 5 years or up to 60,000 miles with roadside assistance coverage under the same term. The most notable warranty feature is complimentary factory maintenance for three years.

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer stands out with unmistakable Jeep looks and a decidedly upmarket feel. It may start at 70 large, but considering the stacks of tech, safety features, off-road capability, and tow-most-anything capacity, it looks to be worth it.
