The 2022 Toyota Tacoma should continue to climb over its competition in this year thanks to a bit of a lift.

What’s New for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma has long been one of the most capable, comfortable, and reliable pickups on the market and it should have no problem continuing that dominance for 2022. It’s also one of the most versatile mid-sized pickup trucks with eight different trims available and outstanding configurability. Let’s take a deep dive into one of the most attractive trucks on the market today that’s just gotten even better.

For 2022, Toyota has made some small adjustments for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma that should add to its allure. New paint colors are available on specific trims and a set of special 16-inch bronze wheels are available on the Trail Edition, but it’s not all aesthetic changes for the Taco. Both the TRD Pro and the Trail Edition get a slightly taller suspension to aid in every off-road situation.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Powertrain

The overall straight-line performance won’t set anybody’s pants on fire regardless of the drivetrain, but both of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma’s options are sincerely good. The base 2.7-liter 4-cylinder is punchy, has reasonable torque, and can get the job done when needed. Still, we prefer the V6 as it nearly doubles the power output. Both engines can be had with a traditional six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. The auto is sometimes a bit slow to react and can sometimes seem a bit confused as to which gear it wants to use. For us, that means that the manual is the way to go and not just because it’s one of the few vehicles still available with three pedals. This six-speed happens to be very good. It’s easy to find gears, super smooth and provides excellent feedback.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Fuel Economy & MPG

The EPA has rated the Toyota Tacoma at 18 mpg combined when equipped with 4WD and the V6, but ratings only get better from there. The rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder Tacoma gets 21 mpg combined. That might be a bit lower than some other options, but it’s good enough to get by.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The inside of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma is decidedly uncomplicated. Unless in the Limited or TRD Pro model, there’s not much at all in the way of luxury. Nevertheless, it’s amicable and comfortable. The layout is incredibly familiar and easy to use. The seats are super-adjustable, supportive, and firm in all the right ways. Visibility is great in every direction. We feel the rear seats are a bit restrictive regardless of the model, so maybe don’t take long road trips in the Tacoma with full-sized adults in the back. One thing most drivers won’t have to worry about is road noise as this Toyota is noticeably quieter than many rivals. Bed space is good and some trims feature locking storage bins back there.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Entertainment & Technology

Toyota leads many competitors in terms of standard tech. Every 2022 Toyota Tacoma gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. They also all get the smallest infotainment screen available among its peers coming in at 7 inches. The user interface is a little better than middle-of-the-road, but the graphics are outstanding. The optional navigation system is also very good. Adding to the utility of the truck you’ll find USB ports all over the place and in some trims a 120-volt outlet in the bed for on the job-site work.

Safety Features

We also love all the standard advanced safety features on the new 2022 Toyota Tacoma. Adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assist are all included. For those that go off-road, the Multi-Terrain camera system provides an extra layer of safety there.

Warranties

Toyota offers standard limited warranty coverage of three years or 36,000-miles and powertrain coverage for five years or 60,000-miles. What sets them apart is the complimentary coverage offered for two years or 25,000-miles. That beats everybody but Kia and Hyundai.

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is dominant in its market and this year isn’t going to see that change at all. Regardless of what you need it to do, the Tacoma can be configured for it and it’s not wildly priced. Add to those benefits that it’s reliable and gets a boatload of complimentary maintenance.
