All-New 2021 Buick Envision Review

New looks, piles of luxury, and a host of standard safety features define the 2021 Buick Envision. It’s an under-the-radar, luxury SUV worth checking out.

A Bold Design from Buick

Fully redesigned, the midsize 2021 Buick Envision sits in between the brand’s small Encore and large Enclave SUV. Considering these three models represent Buick’s entire catalog of vehicles, the new Envision is a critical component to their future success. Based on the how it’s outfitted, the latest Envision looks up to this task.

A few inches one way or another can dramatically reshape a car’s appearance. This holds true with the 2021 Envision. Chopping one inch from the length while adding the same amount to the wheelbase pushes the available 20-inch alloys into a more athletic posture. Dropping the height down an inch and increasing the width by three furthers this newly taut chassis look.

Literally on top of that, the new sheet metal features more aggressive facias, narrow and elongated lighting, plus more sculpted character lines. All packaged up, it gives the new Buick Envision an entirely more upscale demeanor versus the previous generation. Tick the Sport Touring box for an intense style with darkened exterior accents.

In the name of simplicity, buyers will find a single powertrain configuration. It marries a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gas motor with a 9-speed automatic. For between $1800 and $2000, you can opt out of the standard FWD and step up to AWD on any of the three available trims. Fuel efficiency of this layout is decent with FWD models going 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Subtract two from both figures in the AWD Envision.

A Better Handling Experience

Buick isn’t known for handling prowess, but the new 2021 Buick Envision does its best to stack the deck. MacPherson struts up front and a 5-link rear is a strong place to start for the standard suspension setup. Meanwhile, there is an optional Continuous Damping Control system to improve the driving experience. If peace and quiet is more your thing while driving, Buick’s QuietTuning tech is standard equipment. It reduces outside sounds with active noise cancellation via triple door seals and a laminated windshield, amongst other tricks.

2021 Buick Envision Interior & Options

The silent interior is a cozy place to be with features like heated leather seats and dual zone climate control on Essence trim. Add ventilation and massaging seat abilities on the top-line Avenir, along with heated outboard rear cushions. Baseline Preferred models are outfitted in a cloth-leatherette material with a power adjustable driver’s seat.

At $33,490 for the Envision Preferred with FWD, there is a nice stack of features. An 8-inch central touchscreen houses the Buick Infotainment System, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. A Wi-Fi hotspot, heated exterior mirrors, and keyless open fill out the spec sheet. Like all 2021 Buick Envisions, there is plenty of space for your cargo with 25 cubic feet when the seats are up or almost 53 when they’re folded.

Next up on Buick’s trim ladder is the Essence, which starts at $37,690 for front-wheel drive and a more luxurious interior experience. An in-vehicle air ionizer with air quality indicator keeps you breathing easy. The dual-zone, automatic climate control keeps you comfy and interior ambient lighting matches your mood. Both front occupants will find heated seating while the driver can heat the steering wheel for those cold winter drives.

Available only on Preferred and Essence trim levels, the Sport Touring package can get you the most sinister looking Buick on the block. You have to choose a black, white, silver, or red paint job and the Ebony Twilight Metallic really does the trick. For $1325, the Sport Touring packaged 2021 Buick Envision comes with dark finished 20-inch aluminum wheels, Sport Touring badges, and mesh grille inserts. Completing the look, dark gloss finish is slathered across the roof rails, trim pieces, exhaust bezels, and mirror caps.

Sitting atop the 2021 Buick Envision trim tree, Avenir models are just over $42,000 for FWD or $43,890 for AWD. 20-inch wheels are included as is a surround-vision camera system that provides a digital overhead image of the exterior. All the luxury appointments are here with massaging and ventilation added to the driver’s seat. A heads-up display offers easy viewing of important vehicle info and navigation is added to the infotainment system. Like the Essence, the Avenir trim has the larger 10-inch touchscreen display. A Bose 9-speaker audio system and Qi wireless charging round out the entertainment and tech features.

All new Envisions come with a long list of driver assistance aids under the Buick Driver Confidence Plus umbrella. Among those that are widely available in new cars is automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist with lane departure warning, and forward collision alert. There are also some interesting, less common aids included.

The Safety Alert Seat feature uses seat vibration pulses on the left, right, or both sides to help drivers identify the direction of a potential accident. Following Distance Indicator displays, in seconds, the gap between you and the car you’re behind. There’s also Buckle to Drive which keeps the transmission in Park until the driver’s belt is buckled.

On the passive safety front, airbags cover the front occupants, driver’s knees, and side curtains all the way around. OnStar capability ensures quick emergency response in the event of an accident. Other available safety-minded systems are the rearview mirror showing a live camera feed, automatic high beam control, and rear cross-traffic alert.
