694,000 Sports and Escapes Recalled

Ford Motor Company announced a recall impacting more than 640,000 different Ford Bronco and Escape models this week. According to National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, there are concerns that a fuel injector may crack and then leak fuel inside of the engine compartment, increasing the risk of fire.

According to Ford’s Field Review Committee, initial actions were taken in November 2022 and March 2024 to address the risk of underhood fire. They determined that the remedy in both cases was an update to the engine control software. Those updates allowed for the detection of a cracked fuel injector and disables the high-pressure fuel pump in that situation.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because we covered this back in May 2024. However, in April 2024, the NHTSA noted that the software upgrade remedy didn’t address the root cause of the issue or proactively call for the replacement of defective fuel injectors before they failed. Now, this new recall addresses those concerns.

The recalled fuel injectors causing concern on the Bronco Sport were put into production on February 5, 2020 and were taken out of production on February 8, 2024. Fuel injectors recalled on the Ford Escape were in production between November 19, 2018 and December 16, 2022. As a result, certain 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sports and 2020-2022 Ford Escapes are impacted by this recall.

The remedy to the possible fuel injector issues is still being developed. Notifications to people with impacted vehicles are expected to be sent out through the U.S. Postal Service on August 18, 2025. A second notification will be mailed once a solution has been developed for the problem.

In the meantime, owners can take their vehicles to Ford service shops for updated engine control software, free of charge. Bronco and Escape owners can also call Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 with any questions. Ford’s case number for this recall is 25S76.
