All-New 2024 Toyota Tacoma Teasing a Hybrid Powertrain

Toyota has given us a glimpse of their upcoming, all-new 2024 Tacoma – and the mid-sized truck is getting an I-Force Max hybrid powertrain.

Coming Soon: The 2024 Toyota Tacoma

The Brazilian Patent Office already spoiled the surprise about an all-new Toyota Tacoma coming soon, but now Toyota is beginning to break its silence on the matter. Toyota has released a brief glimpse of the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma’s tailgate as it’s kicking up some dirt. From just this portion of the truck we can get a taste of its more aggressive design language, the TRD Pro is coming back, and there is a small i-FORCE Max badge. That new exterior design derives itself from Toyota’s full-sized truck offering, the Tundra, which only recently received its updates for 2022. The renders leaked from the aforementioned patent office help give a better picture of what’s to come, but I’m sure these grayscale images don’t do the real truck justice.

TRD Pro Isn’t Going Anywhere

It’s great to still see that the TRD Pro trim of the truck is returning. Just like the current generation, this next-generation of the Tacoma TRD Pro will feature all of the off-roading performance that fans have come to love. We can assume that the new version of the Tacoma will still carry TRD skid plates, Fox shocks, and a lifted suspension to provide better ground clearance. The real question is, what new features and off-roading gimmicks does Toyota have to entice fans this time around?

i-FORCE Max – a Hybridized Tacoma

The real significant part of this teaser is that badge in the lower right of the tailgate. That little i-FORCE Max badge means that 2024 will be the first time that the Taco is going to be available with a hybrid powertrain. While we don’t have many details on what a hybrid Tacoma entails, we can speculate based on the i-FORCE Max version of the Tundra. The Tundra’s i-FORCE Max hybrid powertrain merges a twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 with an electric motor to push out 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. The Tundra sees a mild bump in fuel efficiency with this hybrid setup, but the Tacoma version could see a more significant boost in that area.

The question is, will the 2024 Toyota Tacoma i-FORCE Max take on a hybridized V6 or inline-four? To that I say, why not both? Toyota could easily provide a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain like the one found on the Toyota Crown Hybrid Max that features a turbocharged 2.4L I4 engine paired with an electric motor to achieve 340 horsepower and 41 mpg combined. Then a V6 i-FORCE Max could also be available, albeit probably detuned from the Tundra’s specs. In either case, AWD will more than likely be the standard.
