There are no major changes to the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado lineup, but a new, dealer-installed Trail Boss package is now available on LT and Z71 models. The front air dam is deleted, a 1” lift is added to the front suspension, and skid plates are bolted on up front and midway along the undercarriage. Cosmetic enhancements include gloss black 17” wheels, black exterior badging, and red recovery hooks. This new package offers an extra boost of off-road ability, though the ZR2 and its available Bison package continue to be the Colorado of choice for buyers in need of serious 4×4 capability.
A Colorado for all budgets and needs
Duramax adds major torque and fuel efficiency
Standard touchscreen infotainment display
ZR2 Bison models are wild
Driver-assist tech requires package purchase
A midsize truck for work, daily, or off-road
There is a trio of body styles available on the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado. Extended cab with a 6’ bed or a pair of four-door Crew cabs, one with a 5’ bed and the other with a 6′ version. Engine availability depends on trim level, but the entry point is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four that makes 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque that’s run to the rear wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. The available 3.5L V6 engine puts down a healthy 308 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Then there’s the optional Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder that cranks out 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque and is paired with a 6-speed. Standard on ZR2 models, 4WD is an available option on all other trims and features an Autotrac 2-speed transfer case to choose high or low range.
All 2020 Chevrolet Colorados come with trailer sway control and the V6 transmission has a tow/haul mode, but you’ll need a package or stand-alone options to access the integrated trailer brake controller, 2” receiver, and Hitch Guidance tech. The built-in rear bumper CornerStep makes loading simpler as does Chevy’s EZ-Lift tailgate, with its internal torsion bar. The max towing figure of 7,700 pounds comes with the Extended cab body paired with the Duramax diesel. V6 models follow up with a 7,000-pound rating, but 2.5L I4-equipped Colorados are limited to a trailering max of 3,500 pounds. There are up to 17 tie down points in the bed to lend a hand in securing cargo towards the 1,500-pound payload limit
For the best fuel efficiency, you’ll want the diesel four-cylinder with its rating of 20 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, or 19 mpg and 28 mpg, respectively, when running 4WD. Next best is the gas-powered 2.5L inline-4 that achieves 19 mpg around town and 25mpg on the open road in RWD; subtract one from the highway figure for 4×4 models. The punchiest V6 is also the thirstiest with its 18/25 mpg rating for city/highway driving in RWD setup or 18/24 mpg on 4WD-equipped models.
The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is a work truck first with vinyl seating and manual HVAC controls. However, it can be outfitted with such luxuries as leather upholstery as well as heated seats and steering wheel. Extended cab models offer rear under seat storage bins and automatic climate control is found higher up on the trim ladder. Other available niceties include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and auto-dimming rearview mirror, though you’ll need the ZR2 to access a power-adjustable passenger seat.
An 8” touchscreen display is included on all 2020 Chevrolet Colorados except WT models, which feature a 7” version. It’s the interface for Apple and Android phone software, the six-speaker stereo system, and other vehicle settings. OnStar telematics are available with the LT and up along with a Wi-Fi hotspot and dual USB ports. Z71 models come with a high-def display and upgraded Chevy Infotainment 3 Plus tech. Standalone options like Qi wireless charging, navigation, and a Bose stereo offer an extra touch of lux to the Colorado.
Driver-assistance aids are limited on the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado, with forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking only available with the $690 Safety package. Teen Driver software, a Tire Fill Alert feature, and reverse backup camera are all standard fare, as is the network of six airbags.
As it sounds, Work Truck (WT) models come with just the basics needed to get a job done as evidenced by the sub-$30K price tag. Though painted silver, those 17” wheels are of the steel variety and black plastic trim is the exterior trim of choice. The gas-powered four-cylinder engine is standard with the option to fit the V6, 4WD, and the various cab configurations, but the Duramax is not available on WT trim.
Vinyl seating trim isn’t exactly fancy, but it is durable and conveniences like power locks and windows are included. As well, the driver’s seat is power adjustable, carpeted floors are standard, as is air conditioning. Chevy’s Infotainment System 3 is managed via a 7” touchscreen display and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring tech. There is a single front USB port and six-speaker stereo on hand as well as a backup camera and Tire Fill Alert.
LT models offer access to the diesel motor for a roughly $7,000 premium over the standard four-cylinder in crew cab setup. The EZ Lift tailgate feature is added with remote locking along with keyless entry, power-adjustable side mirrors, and alloy wheels. Interior conveniences include an auto-dimming rearview mirror and automatic climate controls when the Luxury package is selected. For $750, this package also brings heated leather front seats and a heated steering wheel. The infotainment display bumps to 8” in size and Wi-Fi is included along with a rear USB port and Chevy Connected Access.
Stepping up to the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 nets 17” machined wheels, heated exterior mirrors, and a sliding rear window. Cloth with leatherette trim is the standard upholstery featuring heat and power-adjustable lumbar support on the driver’s side. Choosing the 4WD drivetrain adds a transfer case shield and auto-locking rear differential, though you’ll need the $2995 Trail Boss package for a front suspension lift and additional skid plates. There is also the sharp dressed Midnight Edition, which features black emblems, black 17” rims wrapped in 31” all-terrain rubber, and a spray-on bed liner.
Ready to tackle the outdoors, The Chevrolet Colorado’s ZR2 trim sports driver-selectable locking differentials on both axles, off-road rocker protection, and trim-exclusive wheels mounted in Goodyear DuraTrac tires. The truck is wider and taller than its stable mates and features exotic spool-valve dampers from Multimatic. A power-adjustable passenger seat, leather upholstery, and remote start are all part of the deal, but the most exciting option is the $5750 Bison package. It transforms the already capable ZR2 into an off-road brute with five boron steel skid plates, bigger fender flares, unique bumpers, and more; all of which is developed in cooperation with American Expedition Vehicles.
The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado bumper-to-bumper and corrosion warranty are both applicable for 3 years or 36,000 miles. Powertrain components and roadside assistance coverage lasts for 5 years or 60,000 miles and a single complimentary service visit in included within the first year of ownership.

With a configuration for anyone, the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is still a solid mid-size truck deep into its 2nd generation. The ZR2 Bison and the addition of the Trail Boss package make this model an exciting option for the adventurers out there. Overall, the Colorado will happily handle standard utility tasks with the option to tack on a bit of fancy, but nothing lavish. And that’s fine, it is a pickup truck after all.
