Honda’s Odyssey picked up some considerable updates for 2021 with, among other things, all trims receiving the comprehensive Honda Sensing driver-assist and safety suite. So, the 2022 Honda Odyssey brought less drama with a new Radiant Red Metallic color. Unfortunately, families lost a big standard item we loved – there’s no integrated vacuum cleaner available this year.
The Odyssey powertrain is smooth
Higher trim acoustic glass dampens noise
Honda Sensing suite is standard
Missing the previously integrated vacuum
Warranty isn’t very noteworthy
The 2022 Honda Odyssey’s 3.5-liter V6 acts and sounds and acts like it could fit in a sports sedan. The Odyssey is the beneficiary of Honda’s racing heritage and development team that’s made its engine smooth, powerful, and responsive. We love this engine. Honda’s new smooth as butter 10-speed transmission should resolve some of the problematic shifting issues that owners complained about with its previous 6-speed too.
Smooth is also something that we can say about the 2022 Honda Odyssey’s steering and suspension. Honda’s quick steering and sporty sedan-like handling make up for the fact that you’re driving a minivan. Although Honda is receiving some pressure from Kia’s Carnival in the size, comfort, and handling category, the Carnival has a little way to go to fully compete with the Odyssey. Honda still provides a ride that competitors can’t match.
The 2022 Honda Odyssey may be a minivan, but it is no slouch when it comes to towing. With Honda’s towing package, you’ll be able to pull up to 3500 lbs, making the Odyssey an excellent pickup if it wasn’t a van. With the 3500 lbs of trailering, you can stuff the interior with 1621 lbs of people and stuff. The 2022 Honda Odyssey is turning out to be very versatile.
The V6 in the 2022 Honda Odyssey is as efficient as it is powerful. The EPA says the Odyssey will get 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. In our driving, we saw an average of 28 mpg and we suspect you’ll experience the same numbers, if not higher. Just try not to use too much of that torque, or you’ll be getting closer to 19 mpg.
If you choose to test-drive a 2022 Honda Odyssey, all we ask is that you take it on the road without saying a word to enjoy how quiet it is. Honda says the Odyssey is the best in class when it comes to being quiet. But it may be the only time you’ll enjoy it because the Odyssey loves to haul around people and stuff in its large, comfortable, and innovative interior.
The second-row seats are named “Magic Slide Seats” by Honda and move forward, backward, and side-to-side. The result is the ability to tailor the second-row area to your desire and your passengers’ convenience. To keep an eye on those passengers, you’ll love the in-cabin camera and intercom system that helps facilitate communications without parental yelling. Gone are the days when you threaten, “don’t make me come back there” because now, you can see what’s going on.
If you fold the seats flat, there’s a massive area for cargo room. Yes, the second row and rear seats are heavy should you need to remove them, but that deep well of space in the back makes up for it. The rear bench can fold flat and could fit one of Honda’s 50cc motorcycles in the area behind the back seat easily.
For the best entertainment experience value, we would suggest skipping the base 2022 Honda Odyssey and moving up to the EX. You’ll get Honda’s high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen with its smooth and pleasingly designed user interface. Unlike many infotainment systems, you can customize the Honda Odyssey menu layout and, with every trim except for the LX, you’ll get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in.
We’re very impressed with the Honda Odyssey Elite and Touring trim’s 10.2-inch rear-seat infotainment system. Those of us who still have Blu-ray discs can serve up some excellent theater in the Odyssey, especially when you utilize the rear window shades. There are also additional connections for HDMI, so you can bring your game systems in this rolling family room. In addition, the Elite trim adds some powerful sound with its 550-Watt premium audio system with 11 speakers and a subwoofer.
Honda has a history of setting standards. They did it again when providing the Honda Sensing driver technology package as standard equipment on all of its models, except for the Fit. Bravo to Honda for not segregating safety for those who are only able to afford the highest trims. Standard features include lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control. For 2022, the Honda continues to receive its 5-star rating from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS for the 2022 Honda Odyssey.
The 2022 Honda Odyssey LX standard equipment includes the Honda Sensing suite of safety technology, including a collision mitigation braking system with forward collision warning, road departure mitigation, and lane departure warning. Also included on the LX are lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights. Inside the LX, you’ll receive a 5-inch touchscreen, a seven-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, two USB ports, automatic climate control, and power-adjustable front seats.
The 2022 Honda Odyssey EX upgrades the interior with an 8-inch touch screen and adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and HD Radio. For comfort, it has tri-zone automatic climate control, a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a Magic Slide second-row bench seat. Added convenience and safety items are power-sliding doors, proximity keyless entry, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, remote start, and fog lights.
The 2022 Odyssey EX-L first and second-row seats are covered with leather, while the passenger and driver’s seats have eight-way power adjustments. Additional features are a moonroof, a hands-free power liftgate, and two more USB ports. If you want wireless charging, it’s an extra $300 at this trim level.
The 2022 Honda Odyssey Touring adds a satellite navigation system, WIFI hotspot, a kid favorite rear-seat entertainment system with two 10.2-inch displays, and a 115-volt household-style power outlet. In addition, parents will enjoy CabinWatch, CabinTalk, and Cabin Control that helps you see and communicate with rear passengers. Honda also adds extra’s like larger wheels and standard rear parking sensors.
The Honda Odyssey’s top-of-the-line Elite gets everything from the Touring trim and adds heated and ventilated front seats, wireless charging, acoustic front and rear door glass, and an 11-speaker premium stereo.
Innovation and standard setting haven’t trickled down to the 2022 Honda Odyssey’s warranty. With competitors camping up their warranty specs, Honda still settles with its 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. If you want 2 years of free standard manufacture recommended service, you’ll need to get a Toyota Sienna.

The minivan segment is far from dead, and the 2022 Honda Odyssey is still one of the best of the breed. But Kia and other automakers are designing even more home-type luxury accommodations and redesigning the exterior to mirror their popular SUVs. We’re excited to see how Honda will respond with their future updates to the Odyssey. In the meantime, you’ll love this near-perfect vehicle for taking care of your family.
