2022 Toyota 4Runner Powertrain

2022 Toyota 4Runner - carsforsale.com
2022 Toyota 4Runner - carsforsale.com

2022 Toyota 4Runner drivers will enjoy a very capable on-road cruiser. The only engine options is a 4.0-liter V6 paired to a five-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but four-wheel drive is optional and becomes standard on higher trim levels. It’s not fast and it’s not athletic, but it’s not meant to be. It’s comfortable and easy to place on the road. It’s also spacious enough that anyone can get comfortable and stay that way for long journeys. The seating is firm and supportive. If there’s anything to complain about it would be the high step-up height that might be a problem for some. The wind noise created by the blocky body could also be a concern.

Really though, the 4Runner is about off-road performance and it absolutely dominates there. The platform might be more than a decade old, but clearly, Toyota isn’t trying to fix what’s not broken. Even the 4Runner Limited with its big 20-inch wheels is more capable of getting deep into the woods than most every one of its rivals. The additional features offered by the TRD models are all very impressive. The skid plates, the additional drive modes, and the special shocks and dampers all do a great job of making the 4Runner feel like it’s at home when the road runs out.

Towing & Payload

2022 Toyota 4Runner - pressroom.toyota.com

With a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner leads its segment. It’s a great example of why this older platform can still keep up. When it comes to interior cargo space and the ability to haul more gear, nothing really beats it.

2022 Toyota 4Runner Fuel Economy & MPG

Considering that every 2022 Toyota 4Runner uses the same engine and transmission it should be no shock that they get the same scores from the EPA. Expect 16 miles per gallon in the city and 19 mpg on the highway with either drivetrain setup. That’s below most rivals, but makes sense for an older SUV with an archaic five-speed automatic.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The ride of the 2022 Toyota 4Runner could be improved by a more modern chassis. Other brands like RAM have proven that trucks can be good off-road while also comfortable on road. Toyota would benefit from updating the 4Runner when it comes to ride comfort. It’s not uncomfortable, but it’s certainly more jarring than the average competitor by some margin. On-road it’s happiest on a highway or in traffic.

At the same time, a lot should be said of the interior space offered by the 4Runner. It’s big inside with tons of room for people and things. There’s an optional third row that could work for small children. We love that it holds nearly 50 cubic feet of cargo while comfortably seating five adults though, that’s very rare. In addition, when the 4Runner goes off-road, its multiple terrain select system makes the ride far less anxiety-inducing for passengers.

Entertainment & Technology

While we would love to see a larger screen in the 2022 Toyota 4Runner, we’re impressed with how modern the tech feels. The interface on the 8-inch screen is snappy and easy to use. Navigation directions are clear and easy to follow. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration are great too. Beyond the infotainment Toyota offers a bevy of technology. We love the 15-speaker JBL Sound system as it delivers high-quality sound. Advanced driver assistance technology is fitted to every 4Runner too that includes traffic adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.

Safety Features

In addition to the standard safety technology on the 2022 Toyota 4Runner, it scored a four-star crash test rating from the NHTSA. It hasn’t been evaluated by the IIHS, but the 2021 4Runner didn’t score any awards either.

Warranties

A limited warranty covers the 2022 Toyota 4Runner for 3 years or 36,000-miles. The powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles. That’s no better than any competitor. Where the 4Runner shines is its 2 years or 25,000 miles of complimentary maintenance which is more than any other brand aside from BMW, KIA, or Hyundai.

What we think

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner isn’t going to be shockingly good anywhere on-road, but for those that want a reliable, affordable, and rugged SUV that can go further off-road than almost any other, the 4Runner is basically unbeatable. We won’t be sad when it gets a full ground-up update though.
