Ford’s inaugural EV, the Mustang Mach-E, returns with a new lineup including the offroad-inspired Rally trim. We look at technology, range and more.

What’s new for the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E?

For 2024, Ford has significantly revamped the Mach-E lineup even if the body looks almost untouched. The new Rally trim becomes the top of the lineup with up to 480 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque. A new rear motor for the lineup increases range and the car can charge slightly faster than in previous years. Later in 2024, Ford plans to enable Mach-E owners to charge at Tesla Supercharger stations too.

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Powertrain 8.25/10

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E - carsforsale.com

Ford continues to offer the Mustang Mach-E with two different battery options and the choice of rear or all-wheel drive. Those who select the smaller pack get a 70-kWh battery with 266 horsepower and up to 250 miles of range. Go for AWD and range drops to 230 miles but there’s a horsepower increase to 325. Opt for RWD with the larger battery and horsepower bumps to 290 ponies while range jumps up to 320 miles. Combine AWD with the large battery and it splits the figures by providing up to 300 miles of range. In short, there are trade-offs all over the map here.

Those who prefer to focus on performance rather than range should consider the GT and the Rally trims. They both come standard with the larger battery pack and the most available standard power. The former has existed since the start of Mach-E production and makes 480 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. A Performance Upgrade is available for the GT and boosts torque to 700 lb-ft. The Rally, an off-road speed-focused trim comes standard with 480 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque.

As we mentioned in our review last year, the Mach-E looks good and sounds great on paper but lacks the performance associated with its name. At least, that’s the case when it comes to most trims. They tend toward understeer and numb handling rather than sporty engaging playfulness. Thankfully, the GT and Rally should offer a more aggressive and enjoyable experience.

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Interior 8.5/10

The cabin of the Mustang Mach-E is a balance of utilitarian simplicity and future-forward design language. The dash is heavily weighted by blocky squared off surfaces including the huge 15.5-inch infotainment system and the 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster. These are met with horizontal strakes in the dash that feature the climate vents and connect the door panels. In truth, it feels almost as brutalist as the Tesla Model Y.

In terms of comfort, the Mach-E does a fine job. It’s not particularly posh nor is it too rugged or rough to enjoy most drives. The seats sit a little high and lack the adjustability that taller drivers will most likely prefer. The rear seats have a clever little bump up in the roof to enable taller passengers to relax in comfort without hitting their heads. The seating is mostly flat throughout the lineup. Hopefully, the Rally trim will get more aggressive bolstering. What Ford nailed for sure is the cargo space in this EV.

The center console has a floating armrest with a large cubby beneath it. The rear area swallows almost 30 cubic feet of cargo and that expands to double that with the rear seats folded down. On top of that, the Mustang Mach-E offers additional storage under the front hood. It’s a great vehicle for carrying stuff and people at the same time.

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Technology Features 8.5/10

Let’s talk about that gigantic screen that dominates the interior of the Mach-E. It measures 15.5 inches and leverages Ford’s Sync4 infotainment user interface. Frankly, it’s one of our favorites and is full of fun intuitive menus with deep information just a few clicks away.

Notably, it’s not perfect. Some options, like opening the rear hatch take several button presses, which is a bit silly. Still, we believe most people will like it and the cleverly integrated knob makes it easy to manage some functions. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both standard features.

In addition, Ford provides every Mach-E with a 10.2-inch driver information screen that is also mostly good. It’s bright, easy to read, and lightly configurable. Ford also uses machine learning to customize it and the infotainment screen to three different driver profiles, so it’ll provide the most pertinent info for each driver, in theory at least.

In terms of safety, the Mach-E didn’t win any awards with the IIHS this year but that’s likely due to increased standards there rather than a shortcoming of the Mach-E. After all, it won a Top Safety Pick award in both 2023 and 2022. It comes standard with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, and rear parking sensors.

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Overall Value 8/10

Given the limited range of the Select and Premium with the standard range battery, the GT trim is likely the best value for money. Sure, it starts above $53k but it comes standard with the big battery, AWD, a lot of power, and several of the most desirable interior features. In addition, it requires almost no extra options for the average buyer.

Of course, it might be wise to lease it to get the full federal tax credit as other options like the Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5 offer an even better value for money. Ford offers a very basic three-year limited warranty and five-year powertrain warranty with eight years of electric component coverage. Finally, it’s worth mentioning that some Ford dealers are willing to take thousands off of the Mach-E right now so it might finally be time to strike.

The Mustang Mach-E is a sincerely well-rounded EV, but it doesn’t have any super-shining feature for the moment. As the Rally trim hasn’t been out and well-tested at this point it could very well be that unique facet but only time will tell. Ford would also do well to add more warranty coverage to rival brands like Hyundai and Kia better. Also, if it could sort out the understeer on most models, we’d really love driving this car more.
