What’s new for the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E?

Despite being just a few years old the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E is getting a lot of updates. The California Route 1 is only available with AWD now, the Premium sees its range increase to 290 miles, and it gets 19-inch wheels too. A panoramic fixed-glass roof is now standard on both the GT and the GT Performance.

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Powertrain

Power levels are all over the map in the Ford Mustang Mach-E thanks to the automaker’s clever use of technology. All Mustang Mach-Es use either a standard-range 70 kWH battery pack or an extended-range 91 kWh pack. Both are available with rear or all-wheel drive. Adding power to all four wheels results in more total performance than in an otherwise identically equipped Mustang Mach-E.

Base power for the Select trim comes in at 266 hp and 312 lb-ft of torque. Add AWD to that equation and power stays the same while torque increases to 428 lb-ft. The California Route 1 uses the bigger battery and AWD to develop 346 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s the GT with 480 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. The Performance version adds 28 lb-ft of torque to the equation. Power is not something that the Mustang Mach-E ever really lacks.

True performance on the other hand could be better. We found that in most models, understeer was a serious limiter of road-going fun. In addition, it’s worth noting that even the GT Performance model is limited to just five consecutive seconds of full power. That’s a huge disappointment. In our eyes this isn’t enough of a Mustang just yet.

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Battery Range

Ford offers two different battery packs and the choice of rear or all-wheel drive but it also changes power output based on trim level. What that means in terms of range and mileage is that each trim can be different based on drive layout and battery size. The standard pack with rear-wheel drive can go up to 247 miles on a single charge.

When saddled with all-wheel drive that range drops to 224 miles. The extended battery can go up to 312 miles on a single charge but only in the California Route 1 trim where it always comes with AWD. Other extended-range battery-equipped models get less. The worst offender is the GT Performance Edition with just 260 miles of range.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The interior design of the Mustang Mach-E looks modern and elegant for the most part. Soft-touch materials take up most of the real estate and cheap plastics are often hidden out of sight. The control layout is easy to understand and we like the flat floor too. If there’s anything we’d change it’s the somewhat tacked-on-looking digital gauge cluster.

Seating in the Mustang Mach-E is pleasantly spacious and comfortable. Both rows offer ample headroom and legroom though we’d love to see the seating position sit a little lower in the front. The rear seats benefit from a small bump up in the roof that adds headroom. Those who have the option might prefer the sport seats as they’re bolstered well and feel better to us than the normal ones. Cargo space is near the top of the class thanks to 29 cubic feet of storage behind the second row. Drop those seats and it expands to just over double that.

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Entertainment & Tech

Ford’s infotainment and technology suite is housed inside a huge 15.5-inch infotainment system. It’s vertically integrated, looks great, and even includes a cool physical knob near the bottom to provide a bit more tactile engagement. Not only is the software fairly fast but it’s improving all the time. Last year we complained that the system was a bit clunky. Menus aren’t always logically laid out and it can be tough to find what one is looking for.

That’s still true but now Ford is using machine learning to customize the experience in up to three different driver profiles. That enables the system to adjust based on how often one uses specific features. We love that proactive touch. The optional premium sound system is also worth the cash. Among other cars in this class like the Volvo XC40, the Kia EV6, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Mustang stands out when it comes to sound.

Safety Features

Standard safety features on the Mustang Mach-E include automated emergency braking, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist are available for extra cash. Ford also offers its semi-autonomous driving software, BlueCruise on some models. It offers drivers the ability to navigate specific highways hands-free.

What we think

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E - ford.com

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E is still a force to be reckoned with despite other slightly newer entries into the market. It’s stylish, spacious, and simple enough that those most comfortable with legacy automakers can make an easy transition to electric over gas.

While we think other brands like Kia, Tesla, and Hyundai offer more compelling EVs, the Mustang Mach-E is worth test driving if you’re in this market. Our article on new car incentives might help sway you one way or another.
