Jeep mixed up quite a few features for the 2024 Wagoneer model year. The HEMI V8 from last year is gone altogether and the twin-turbo inline six is standard across the range. The base Wagoneer no longer has access to the front-passenger infotainment system. The top trim now comes standard with 4WD, an air-spring suspension system, a heads-up display, and a power-folding third row. The Series II L models are also now available with air springs.
Awesome technology
Extremely comfortable
Good engine
Questionably styling
Expensive in all trims
No hybrid
A very capable but pricey proposition
The Wagoneer is an interesting SUV for several reasons. Firstly, it feels smaller than its large footprint might suggest. Despite being right in the same range as the Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, and Navigator, it feels sharper in terms of steering and response. No, it won’t win any handling awards when compared to smaller SUVs, but it’s also not as prone to body roll and a feeling of numbness as its rivals.
In addition, it uses a twin-turbocharged inline-six that develops 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque. That’s plenty of passing power and the drivetrain with its eight-speed automatic transmission is delightfully quick to respond. It’s also more powerful than the now-defunct HEMI V8 and still manages to get 17 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. Those are also solid figures for a vehicle of this size. It would be great to see Jeep introduce a hybrid but we’ll take what we can get.
Finally, it’s impossible not to take a moment to consider just how rugged and capable the Wagoneer is off-road. The vast majority of buyers will never take it off of the pavement, but the ability to go further off-road than any rival remains thanks to Jeep’s three available exceptional 4WD systems, air-spring suspension, and drive modes specifically for things like rocks, sand, snow, and mud. On top of all that, it also has a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds.
The cabin of the Wagoneer is where most people will come away impressed. Yes, it’s very spacious, but it’s also incredibly well-built. When compared directly to the rivals at Ford and General Motors it feels a cut above in terms of material quality. It doesn’t feature as much plastic and offers supportive seating, great visibility, and clever little storage cubbies too. It’s almost hard to believe that this is a product from Jeep.
Tri-zone climate control and leather upholstery are standard. The second-row seats are available as a bench or captain’s chairs and can be had with power adjustability too. Even the third row is available with a power reclining option. Jeep also offers other features like a panoramic sunroof, heated second-row seats, ambient interior lighting, a wireless charging pad, and second-row manual sunshades.
Buyers of the normal Wagoneer benefit from 27.4 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row. Those who spring for the L version get 42.1 cubic feet. Folding the seats down provides 116 and 130 cubic feet depending on the version.
Technology is another big win for the Wagoneer. It comes standard with a 10.1-inch infotainment system and thanks to its Uconnect 5 interface it’s one of our favorites. It’s fast, featureful, easy to navigate, and also incorporates both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The standard sound system is a nine-speaker setup from Alpine and frankly, we’d skip it if you can afford the 19-speaker package from McIntosh. Of every sound system we’ve tested in this space, nothing comes close to the crispness and clarity.
Buyers can also add a rear-seat infotainment system on the Series III that’s worth consideration. It comes with Amazon Fire TV which includes multiple streaming platforms and the ability to listen to content through Bluetooth headphones.
A front-passenger infotainment system is also available on the Series II and standard on the Series III. It turns that passenger into a fully-equipped co-pilot who can affect navigation and media changes without having to reach a few extra inches over to the main screen. Of course, it also enables them to watch their own content privately
Finally, let’s talk about safety. The Wagoneer doesn’t have to pass all of the same safety tests that most cars do since it’s a light truck. That said it gets four out of five stars in crash testing by the NHTSA and the IIHS hasn’t tested it at all.
Jeep does include several safety aids. It comes standard with forward collision mitigation, blind-spot warning, and parking sensors. Buyers can pay more for things like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and a 360-degree camera system.
The base Wagoneer comes with 18-inch wheels, rear-wheel drive, tri-zone automatic climate control, a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, driver’s seat memory functions, a 10.1-inch infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, nine speakers, power-adjustable second-row seats, Capri leather-trimmed seats, keyless entry, a hands-free liftgate, a 115-volt household-style power outlet, and a class IV tow hitch.
The Series II adds 20-inch wheels, a wireless charging pad, LED interior lighting, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.
This is the same as the normal Series II but it adds a panoramic sunroof, black wheels, darker accents, and a reversible vinyl/carpeted floor mat package.
Finally, the Series III comes with four-wheel drive and heated second-row seats. It also opens up other optional features like a 19-speaker McIntosh sound system, a rear-seat entertainment system, power-reclining third-row seats, a heads-up display, an adaptive air suspension, and 22-inch wheels.
At over $60,000 as a starting price, the Jeep Wagoneer isn’t exactly affordable to the average buyer. We’d recommend looking for one as a certified pre-owned unit before biting the bullet on a brand-new model. At the same time, it’s the best value in the segment since neither Ford nor GM is keeping up in terms of interior quality, ride, handling, or technology.

There’s not too much that one can ask from Jeep but we’d love to see it find a way to lower the cost of these SUVs without much degradation in content. At the same time, a hybrid version could be really enticing.
