Is the CX-70 the Next Great Mazda SUV?

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is set to bolster the automaker’s SUV lineup this spring as we discuss in this sneak peek of the “new” two-row model.

Mazda has been hard at work over the last few years revamping its SUV lineup with CX nomenclature. Last year they dropped the rather handsome CX-90 – that we review here – with a luxury segment stance thanks to the longitudinally-mounted straight-6 motor and rear-wheel drive architecture.

Underneath that flagship SUV in the brand’s hierarchy is the CX-50 and its less rugged-looking CX-5 stablemate, followed by the wee CX-30 as the entry point. So, when Mazda shared it would be taking the wraps off the “first ever” CX-70 as part of a special reveal, one might have expected an entirely new SUV to slot between the CX-50 and CX-90 in Mazda’s lineup.

The Baby CX-70

The new Mazda CX-70 will certainly sit above the CX-50, but considering it appears to be identical to the CX-90 in size, the other end of that arrangement is murkier. Mazda has not shared dimensions yet, but take a look at the CX-70 and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was the CX-90.

However, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 will be a strictly two-row midsize SUV with room for five versus the CX-90 with its three rows of seating. To position the CX-70 as a distinct model, Mazda has subtly altered the exterior and by subtle, we mean only the most hawk-eyed car nerds will be able to spot the differences.

The front and rear bumpers have mildly different contours, there is a smattering of gloss black trim on the front grille, side mirrors, and door handles, and the wheels – which go as big as 21 inches – earn designs unique to the CX-70.

Now, none of this whining is to suggest there’s something wrong with the CX-70. Sharing so much of itself with the CX-90 is no bad thing as that three-row SUV is a class act with sweet powertrains and plenty of premium vibes.

The Mazda CX-70 Offers Two Engine Options

To that end, Mazda has shared that the 2025 CX-70 will offer a 3.3L turbocharged inline-6 with mild hybridization or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup. If these powertrains match up with those found in the CX-90, we can expect the straight-6 to produce 280 or 340 horsepower depending on trim and the PHEV engine to be based on a 2.5L four-cylinder gas engine making a combined 323 hp.

Mazda has confirmed that the incoming CX-70 will be all-wheel drive only, have an 8-speed automatic transmission, and be capable of towing 5,000 pounds with the six-cylinder powertrain. And we know the PHEV in the CX-90 can drive about 26 miles on electricity alone, so the CX-70 PHEV is likely in the same ballpark.

The Interior of the CX-70 is a Showstopper

Inside the 2025 CX-70, Mazda’s upmarket push of late is on display with handsome patterned gray metallic trim, soft-touch surfaces galore, and an available panoramic moonroof. The automaker does make note of interior amenities exclusive to the CX-70 like red Nappa leather inspired by the 100th Anniversary Special Edition MX-5 roadster.

Remote folding rear seats are a new feature for Mazda said to encourage active lifestyles and their adventure-minded cargo. There’s also a special sub-trunk storage space in the CX-70 aimed at hiding valuables and other small stuff out of sight.

A slim, landscape-oriented central infotainment screen – that mirrors the CX-90 – can be seen atop the CX-70 dash. Bucking the industry-wide touch-controlled display approach, Mazda fits a rotary control knob to the center console.

The New Mazda CX-70 has Great Interior Options

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be on hand and, in another Mazda first, Alexa will be at the owner’s beck and call to enable voice control of things like the cabin temperature, radio stations, and smart home devices. Other tech like a wireless phone charging pad, digital gauge cluster, and Bose audio system will also find their way into the new CX-70.

i-Activsense is Mazda’s brand of advanced driver-assistance systems, a bundle that includes forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, a lane-keeping system, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert on the CX-90.

A similar level of standard systems will likely be included on the two-row CX-70 along with an all-new bit of tech Mazda calls Unresponsive Driver Support, a feature that builds on Cruising & Traffic Support. With it, the CX-70 can automatically decelerate down to a full stop in the event a driver does not respond to an escalating level of alerts.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is Coming Soon

Expected this spring, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 appears to simply be a two-row version of the CX-90. That’s all well and good but describing it as a new vehicle seems like a stretch. Then again, Mazda didn’t ask me, and considering how well the CX-90 has been received, the CX-70 is bound to be equally solid. Stay tuned for the full review.
