With Ford leading the way and Chevy hot on their heels, the 2024 Ram 1500 EV is ready to fill out the electrification of America’s full-size pickup trucks.
With Ford already selling their battery-powered F-150 – and hustling to meet overwhelming demand – and Chevy set to cut the Silverado EV loose this year, the Ram 1500 EV will join the fray sometime in 2024. Revealed in concept form at CES 2023 under the nameplate Ram 1500 Revolution, the new truck signals the future direction for all Ram EV trucks. And it is a looker.
Notably longer and more rakish than the existing Ram 1500 lineup, the Revolution sits on a 4-inch longer wheelbase but maintains the same bed length. Smooth-sided with a dramatic hourglass shape that is accentuated by massive 24-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch rubber, the styling is eye-catching. Illuminated Ram badges and a new “tuning fork” LED lighting design carries throughout the Revolution.
Details like pivoting tow hooks integrated into the front skid plate and power operation of the charge port door, flush-mounted door handles, assist steps, and a tailgate that can split in half are nifty and possible production options on higher-end trims. Those “Grand Saloon” doors that open 90 degrees with no B-pillar seem less likely to make the cut, cool as they are.
Inside the Revolution, we get to see the benefits of having the powertrain located beneath the truck. For one thing, the seats can fold flat – or be removed – to maximize interior space. There are also a pair of jump seats mounted on the midgate for extra passengers.
And that midgate can fold flat to accommodate longer cargo. For objects up to 18 feet long, the frunk can also be opened up, from the inside, to stretch items from tail to tip. The cargo bed itself has a Go-Go-Gadget sliding feature to offer even more length. There is also an embedded Ram Track system of rails and tie-down points running from end to end.
As you would expect, the Ram 1500 EV concept is a showcase of cutting-edge technology as well. An AI-powered virtual assistant can respond to exterior and interior voice commands like “close the windows” and “follow me”. That latter feature is part of what Ram calls Shadow Mode, which enables the Revolution to slowly trail its owner as they walk around outside. Ram points to how this would aid in cleaning up a job site for example.
Dual 14-inch central touchscreens can combine into one huge 28-inch display or the lower half can be removed and used like a tablet. The removable center console has a removable lid that can act as a workstation and accommodate this screen. Other slick systems include a head-up display with augmented reality capability and a collapsible steering wheel replete with tiny screens for vehicle controls.
The collapsing feature would come into play when the Level 3+ autonomous control is put to use. Under those circumstances, the steering wheel retracts into the dashboard to open up space while the driver kicks back and lets the truck take over. Very Jetsons-y.
On the sustainability front, the new Ram 1500 EV concept is upholstered in “biobased apple leather” with trim materials constructed from recycled water bottles. The floor and cargo bed are constructed from a combination of recycled rubber and cork for durability.
STLA, which is the name for Stellantis’ new full-size electric truck platform, will underpin the new Ram EV. It will maintain body-on-frame construction with a pair of Electric Drive Modules – front and rear – to enable all-wheel drive. The concept rides on an air suspension with three modes – Ingress/Egress, Aero, and Off-Road – and uses four-wheel steering, which would be a boon when it comes to maneuvering this relatively huge vehicle.
Though powertrain specs have not yet been shared, Ram says the incoming EV will be capable of adding 100 miles of range in 10 minutes with 800-volt DC fast charging at up to 350 kW. In a nod to the past, the Ram Charger was also unveiled at CES 2023. This home-charging robot will be able to automatically move into position and intelligently charge the truck at off-peak times. News like this breakthrough in battery tech from Penn State and plans for the Big Three to partner up on battery material production should only help make this aspect of EV ownership easier.
Stellantis has been making bold statements on their future electrification plans across all their brands including Jeep. And this Revolution concept looks poised to deliver on those promises. It will lead the charge for a host of Ram EV trucks down the road as part of the automaker’s vision to “reimagine the future of pickup trucks.” At the moment, you can sign up for email updates on the new Ram EV with production slated to begin in 2024 and more information to follow in the coming months.
