Longtime Detroit rivals pit their latest and greatest crossovers against one another in this 2024 Ford Edge vs Chevrolet Blazer comparison.
Like Coke and Pepsi, Marvel and DC, or Apple and Microsoft, the Blue Oval and the Bowtie Brand have been going head-to-head seemingly forever. And in the super competitive midsize crossover segment, that rivalry brings us today’s matchup – the 2024 Ford Edge vs. Chevrolet Blazer.
No, not the Bronco-busting off-roader of the ‘70s, the 2-door precursor to the Tahoe of the ‘90s, or even the S-10 pickup-based variant. Nope, the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer is the same long-running nameplate applied to a 2-row crossover platform with Camaro-ish looks. On sale since 2019, the current Blazer arrives with standard heated front seats and a new Riptide Blue Metallic paint option.
Across town, Ford has been selling its Edge since 2007 with the second-gen model arriving in 2015. A 2023 facelift brought fresh sheet metal and a standard 12-inch touchscreen interface, but the Edge is otherwise on the old end of automotive production lifecycles. Both of these 2-row Detroit crossovers are aimed at the same target audience of, well, people that don’t want to drive sedans, so let’s see who does it best.
Both vehicles in this 2024 Ford Edge vs. Chevrolet Blazer comparison feature a standard 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain. In the Ford, this setup is rated for 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque while the Chevy comes in at 228 hp and 258 torques.
Ford pairs its motor with an 8-speed automatic transmission while the Blazer gets a 9-speed unit. However, AWD is standard across the Edge lineup, while the Chevy Blazer is FWD with AWD a $2,700 option on all models. In the fuel efficiency department, the Edge earns 23 mpg combined versus 24 mpg combined for an AWD Blazer or 25 with FWD.
There is also a V6 available for both crossovers. In the Edge, it is a turbocharged 2.7L affair that produces 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque and is exclusive to the ST model. Chevy’s naturally aspirated 3.6L unit comes in at 308 horses and 270 torques. Standard on RS models, the V6 can also be fitted to the Premier trim line for $500. You can expect 21 mpg combined in both the V6 Ford and V6 Chevy with AWD.
For the most part, we’re past the days when an SUV has anything but a fully independent suspension, which is the case for both the 2024 Edge and Blazer. In RS-guise, the 2024 Blazer is upgraded with a unique suspension and steering tune as well as a twin-clutch AWD system that can move torque side-to-side for the rear wheels independently.
The Edge in hot rod ST format also receives a modified suspension tune and offers a performance braking package that brings larger front brake rotors, an upgraded radiator, summer tires, and 21-inch rims. While those big wheels certainly look nifty, watch out for a harsher ride due to the slimmer sidewalls.
As you might expect, the more potent Edge ST can do the 0-60 mph sprint faster – 5.7 seconds per Car and Driver – than a V6-powered Blazer – 6.6 seconds per Edmunds – but these crossovers are likely being shopped for their generally comfortable rides, which is what both aim to deliver.
For those looking to tow, the Ford Edge and Chevy Blazer can handle a reasonable load. Regardless of powertrain, the Edge can tug up to 3,500 pounds. The base Blazer comes in slightly lower with a 3,250-pound towing capacity or quite a bit more – 4,500 pounds – with the V6. As always, these figures require an additional trailering package.
Arguably, the main benefit to driving a crossover versus a sedan is the cargo hauling capability. On that front, Ford’s Edge has 73 cubic feet of space behind the front seats or 39 behind the second row. In the Blazer, those figures are quite a bit smaller at 64 and 30 cubic feet, respectively.
Both vehicles offer room for 5 passengers but the Ford has the, ahem, edge in rear seat space with 57 inches of hip room to 54 in the Blazer. Additionally, the Edge bests the Blazer by 1 inch for rear seat legroom, headroom, and shoulder room.
As for quality, if leather is your benchmark, the Chevy Blazer is for you as it is standard from 3LT trim on up. Ford doesn’t offer genuine animal hides, instead fitting its ActiveX synthetic material to every model except the base SE. Dual-zone automatic climate control is lineup-standard on both SUVs with climatized front seats and heated rears available, but only the Blazer comes with standard heated front thrones.
For modern cars, the displacement competition has been replaced by who has a bigger screen. In this Ford Edge vs. Chevrolet Blazer competition, the Edge easily wins with a standard 12-inch touchscreen vs. 10 inches in the Blazer. Both come with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay and Wi-Fi capability, but only the Ford could earn a spot on this list of the best automotive infotainment systems.
At a glance, the 2024 Ford Edge’s starting price of $39,860 for an SE model seems out of line with the $36,795 price tag for a base 2024 Chevy Blazer 2LT. However, the Edge comes standard with AWD, an option on the Blazer that moves the sticker up to $39,545.
In both cases, 18-inch alloy wheels, full exterior LED lighting, cloth seating, and a 6-speaker stereo are standard. Chevy includes forward collision mitigation, a lane-keeping system, and automatic high beams on all 2024 Blazers. The Edge matches that and adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, both of which are included on Blazer 3LT trim and above.
For just over $41,000, an Edge SEL brings a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, a 9-speaker stereo system, and the option for Co-Pilot360 Assist+. For $775, this expanded roster of advanced driver-assistance systems features adaptive cruise control , evasive steering assist, and connected navigation.
A similarly priced Blazer 3LT comes with a power liftgate, and reverse parking sensors while offering adaptative cruise control, a digital rearview mirror, a Bose 8-speaker audio system, and a surround-view monitor as part of the $2,435 Sound and Technology package.
Running about $45,000, the sporty Edge ST-Line rides on 20s, has red cabin stitching, Miko suede-like seat inserts, and a wireless charging pad. Running about $1,000 less, Chevy’s sporty Blazer, the RS, also features 20-inch wheels, while adding ambient cabin lighting, a heated steering wheel, a digital gauge cluster, and a wireless charging pad.
In Premier spec with AWD, the top-spec Blazer costs about $1,600 more than a top-line $45,000 Edge Titanium. The Blazer sports handsome two-tone leather with the option for climatized front seats, heated rear seats, and a panoramic moonroof. Edge Titanium comes with ventilated front seats and a 12-speaker B&O stereo while offering a huge glass roof panel, a 180° front-view monitor, a self-parking system, and heated rear seats.
Starting at $48,700 and getting as pricey as $57,000 when fully loaded, the Edge ST is somewhat of an outlier here. It’s a niche model targeted at those in need of a relatively huge motor and fancy brakes. So, who does it better in this 2024 Ford Edge vs Chevrolet Blazer matchup of longtime Detroit rivals? The Edge. It has more standard ADAS, more cargo space, more rear passenger room, more power, a bigger infotainment screen, an available self-parking system, and a more potent premium audio offering.
That’s a lot more, on all levels, and when compared to a 2024 Blazer with AWD, the price tag runs from fairly close at the bottom end to fairly cheaper at the top end. It’s not all bad news for the Blazer as Chevy includes the first maintenance visit as part of its warranty coverage that otherwise matches Ford – which does not offer complimentary maintenance.
As well, the Blazer comes with heated front seats standard and an extra thousand pounds of towing capacity. But that’s not enough to outweigh everything the Ford has going for it.
