We ranked the best full-size SUVs of 2022 based off of their towing capability, powertrains, interior space, and options. Which one comes in at number one?
Full-sized SUVs are one of the most versatile body styles out there on the market today. They provide ample amounts of passenger room, a terrific amount of cargo space, some luxurious rides, and plenty of great technology for the whole family. Since these full-size SUVs are based off of truck platforms, they can tow, haul, and overcome obstacles like their full-size truck siblings do. This segment has grown to be pretty competitive here in the United States, as more advanced safety tech, quality updates, and powerful engines are baked in. We looked at all the available full-size SUVs for 2022 and ranked them according to how well they scored with our writers. Here’s what we found!

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia runs on the same platform from 2008, but Toyota plans to introduce a new generation for 2023. The age is apparent in the current Sequoia’s design, features, and powertrain. The 5.7L V8 under the hood is lackluster compared to the rest of the full-size SUV segment and doesn’t standout in any area. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard with four-wheel drive (4WD) available as an option. The interior of the Sequoia is virtually unchanged since 2008. Material quality feels cheap, the design lags behind the times, and the seven-inch infotainment system is laughable at its price point. Toyota Safety Sense is standard equipment and there are two years or 25,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, but the next generation can’t come fast enough for this Toyota.

The Nissan Armada underwent a refresh last year that updated its exterior appearance and brought on a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. Under the hood is the same 5.7L V8 it has always had, but the refresh bumped it up to 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Paired to that single engine is a seven-speed automatic transmission that transfers power to either the rear wheels or all four optionally. Fuel economy isn’t the best, but this powertrain achieves a great 8,500-pound towing capacity. As for advanced safety features, the Armada comes standard with automated emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alter, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. Inside is a nice place to be, especially on the top trim levels featuring quilted leather seating, optional second row captain’s chairs with a center console, and a sunroof.

Chevrolet provided us with the next generation of the Tahoe last year. Shoppers have the choice between three engine options, including a new 3.0L turbodiesel. Paired to all the engines is a 10-speed automatic transmission and there’s the choice of RWD or 4WD. That new diesel option helps the Tahoe reach one of the best fuel efficiencies at 24 mpg combined. Then, the best towing capacity is found with the 5.3L V8 at 8,400 pounds. Look inside and you’ll find comfortable seating, modern design updates, and a new 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen system. Chevrolet also offers some of the best rear seat entertainment available with their 12.6-inch dual screen system. On the advanced safety front, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, and rear park assist are the only standard fare. All other advanced features are behind a Driver Alert Package paywall.
Ample amount of space
Standard Rear Parking Assist

Lots of power from the V8
Would benefit from a built-in PA system

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban went through all the same generational updates that the Tahoe did, just on a longer form. Both V8 options and the new Duramax diesel are available and they’re all paired to the same 10-speed automatic transmission found in the Tahoe. The Suburban is also available in RWD or 4WD. Being essentially a larger version of the Tahoe means added weight, which has affected its fuel economy slightly down to a rating of 23 mpg combined with RWD. Max towing capacity also takes a hit down to 8,300 pounds. However, what you lose in performance you gain in interior space. The Suburban can expand to 144.7 cu-ft of total cargo room, that’s an additional 21.8 cu-ft of room to work with in addition to all the same interior comfort and technology found in the Tahoe.
Improved handling and cargo space
Duramax diesel can run for 648 miles

Being the corporate cousin to the Tahoe, the 2022 GMC Yukon also moved into a new generation last year. The Yukon provides the same three engine options, same 10-speed automatic transmission, and also comes in either RWD or 4WD. This means it gets the same 8,400-pound towing capacity with the 5.3L V8 that the Tahoe does. However, its best fuel economy drops slightly to 23 mpg. One difference mechanically that the Yukon provides is its Active Response 4WD that works with an electronic limited-slip differential to perform better in off-road situations. Otherwise, it’s the typical GMC adornments on the interior and exterior that are the only noticeable changes between it and the Chevrolet model. That is unless you move up to the Denali trim that features one of the nicest luxury appointed interiors of the segment.

The 2022 Ford Expedition features Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 suite of advanced driver assistance technology as standard fare across the lineup. Inside, a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard with a giant, vertically oriented 15.5-inch unit available on top trims. The interior is roomy and comfortable, but you’ll want to strive for a high-end trim level to access leather upholstery and the panoramic sunroof. On the powertrain front, a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 is the only option technically, but the output varies depending on trim level. Paired with that engine is a great 10-speed automatic transmission and RWD is standard with a 4X4 drivetrain available. The Expedition gets one of the best towing capacities of this group at 9,300 pounds and is also capable of getting commendable gas mileage.

Jeep has revived their Wagoneer nameplate for 2022 and it has made quite the first impression in the full-size SUV market. Powering this new Jeep product is a 5.7L V8 engine with eTorque generating 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. Paired to that lone engine is an eight-speed automatic transmission and either RWD or 4WD optionally. This powertrain is capable of towing a class leading 10,000 pounds when properly equipped. The Wagoneer also offers a very nice ride thanks to its fully independent suspension that can come fitted with the Quadra-Lift air suspension system. Inside is one of the nicest interiors to date. It’s spacious, luxurious, and feels well worth its price point. On the tech side, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen is standard alongside a 10.3-inch digital instrument display, an optional 10.3-inch front passenger system is available, and rear passengers can have access to two 10.1-inch units. Jeep rounds out the Wagoneer with a great list of advanced safety and driver-assistance aides, plus three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance included.
