A Formula 1 Record Breaker

Sir Lewis Hamilton is a big name among Formula 1 fans. Not only is the British racecar driver one of the best in the motorsport today, but he has racing record helps state his case as one of the best of all time. He holds the record for the most pole positions at 104, most podium finishes at 197, most career wins at 103, most wins with the same F1 team at 82, and is currently tied with the great Michael Schumacher for most F1 Championships at seven. All that and he’s one of the first black drivers to compete in F1’s history.

Even as Hamilton approaches 40 years old he has continued to be impressive on the track. Although, recent years have been filled with setbacks and shortcomings alongside Red Bull’s rise to dominance through Max Verstappen. A change of scenery might help get the driver back on top as Hamilton plans to leave his current team, Mercedes-AMG Petronas, in favor of Scuderia Ferrari starting next season.

This announcement sent a shockwave through the F1 world, but his car collection may have been a sign of what’s to come. We took a look through Sir Lewis Hamilton’s garage and found some interesting additions to his collection. Check out the cars in Lewis Hamilton’s collection – some which may surprise you!

Mercedes-Benz and Lewis Hamilton just go hand-in-hand and it’ll be hard to visualize otherwise after this season. He’s been associated with Mercedes even in his early karting career under the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Programme back in 1998. His debut in Formula 1 was with the McLaren-Mercedes team in 2007, and he’d remain steadfast with the Mercedes side of things after those entities split in 2013. After being associated with the manufacturer for so long, Hamilton has gotten the chance to own and drive some exciting and unique Mercedes-Benz vehicles over the years.

Mercedes-Benz Project One AMG

Lewis Hamilton’s Project One hypercar has to be one of the most exciting entrants to his collection. Not only is this a high-performance, F1 engined beast that’s built to conquer the Nürburgring, but it’s exceedingly rare with only 275 of the model having been produced. Mercedes-Benz gave Hamilton the keys early on as a part of a promotional stunt, but the driver enjoyed the car so much that he bought two – one for himself and one for his father. The Mercedes-Benz Project One AMG comes with a staggering $2.7 million price tag, so that’s quite the gift for himself let alone his dad too.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

Any good Mercedes-Benz collection must feature an SLS, and Hamilton made sure to address that concern. His SLS AMG Black Series was picked up prior to his dominant 2014 season. The red coupe featuring the blacked-out trim is pretty slick and having him exit the vehicle through those iconic gullwing doors only adds to the look. A 6.3L V8 pumping out 622 horsepower might seem like a lot of ponies to handle, but that’s nothing compared to what Hamilton experiences behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car.

Mercedes-Benz GT R AMG

Hamilton also picked up a Mercedes-Benz he’s all too familiar with on the track, the Mercedes-Benz GT R AMG. This model was used as the Formula 1 safety car from 2018 to 2020, the same years Hamilton achieved a championship four-peat. He’s seen those GT R taillights so much that he must have taken a liking to the car. Not only is this a nostalgia piece for the F1 driver, but the Mercedes-Benz GT R AMG is a racing imbued sports coupe that can make for an exciting ride through the curves of Monte Carlo – one of the places the driver calls home.

Mercedes-Benz G63 6×6 AMG

If you can afford to own a truck with six wheels, you pretty much have to get a truck with six wheels. That’s exactly what Lewis Hamilton did after signing a $100 million deal with Mercedes in 2015. The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 is a street behemoth that takes the G63 SUV and tacks on a truck bed and an extra rear axle. These unique, six-wheeled cars are no longer officially produced by Mercedes-Benz, so this is another rarity in Hamilton’s collection. Maybe this is a hint that the driver hopes to take on off-road motorsports following his F1 career? He is already the owner of an Extreme E team, so it’s right there for him to hit the dirt.

Mercedes-Benz EQS

Hamilton has been considering his carbon footprint in recent years and has made the switch to electric when driving day to day. One of his electric cars on hand is the Mercedes-Benz EQS 53 4MATIC+ AMG. While this electric vehicle aids in reducing his personal carbon emissions by achieving a 335-mile estimated range on a single charge, it’s still pretty sporty too. With a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds through its dual motor setup, the F1 driver should feel right at home.

Mercedes-Benz EQC

The other fully electric Mercedes-Benz in Hamilton’s possession is his EQC. This electric SUV is one of his everyday rides while he leaves the rest of his petrol-powered collection in storage. It may not be as fast as the rest of his cars, but it definitely has the most amount of cargo space available for trips to the shops.

Mercedes-Maybach S600

Hamilton also has some exceedingly luxurious rides from Mercedes, one of which is the Mercedes-Maybach S600. This posh version of the S-Class sedan features substantial improvements inside and out. The model is stretched an extra 8.1 inches longer to provide more rear passenger space and to accommodate specialize reclining executive seats featuring integrated footrests. The rest of the interior is done up with premium materials, ornate trimming, and some of the latest tech in 2016. While this Maybach may be more enticing from the rear seats, that V12 biturbo engine would make for some fun at the pedal. The only other Maybach Hamilton might add to his collection is the Vision 6 Cabriolet, which was an opulent concept vehicle that he got to witness first hand. Sadly, that ride will probably remain in the Mercedes-Benz vault.

Smart EQ fortwo

While a microcar may not seem like the ideal ride for a racecar driver, Lewis Hamilton has come out and made it known that his favorite daily driver is a super compact, fully-electric car from one of Mercedes-Benz’s sub-brands. The Smart EQ fortwo is an ideal candidate for an international superstar to get around incognito. Problem is, the cat is out of the bag on this Hamilton car, so keep an eye out for a spritely fortwo zipping around one of his residences.

Lewis Hamilton’s Classic Car Collection

Lewis Hamilton is also a fan of the classics. He has a couple old cars that carry some form of relation to Formula 1’s history and even some personal history. Check out his retro rides!

1995 McLaren F1

Given Hamilton’s history, owning a McLaren just makes sense. What makes even more sense is throwing down $15 million to purchase one of the most coveted and highly-sought after McLaren models ever produced, the McLaren F1. What’s funny about this purchase is that Hamilton was actually promised a papaya colored McLaren F1 by his old team chief Ron Dennis if he was able to win three Formula Championships. He’s clearly succeed twice over at reaching that goal, but almost all of those championships were under Mercedes. Now Lewis Hamilton can experience what could have been as he cruises around Los Angeles in his classic supercar. Although, he probably won’t be experiencing the 240 mph top speed or 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds thanks to that LA traffic.

1966 Shelby Cobra 427

The Shelby Cobra is a classic sports car that will continue to live on as a must have collectors item. The only problem for most enthusiasts is that it’s nearly impossible to own without fronting an exorbitant amount of cash leaving it an unobtainable dream. That isn’t the case for Lewis Hamilton though as he has plenty of cash to throw around, especially on cars. His polished black 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 is immaculate and a pristine example of why this car has lived in the minds of car enthusiasts for decades.

1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Lewis Hamilton might be a bit of an automotive movie buff as he owns a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 that looks a lot like the car used in Gone in 60 Seconds. The Formula 1 driver’s version of Eleanor may be in a shade of red instead of the gun metal grey, but it’s otherwise strikingly similar to the car we’ve seen speed around on the big screen. Hamilton just uses his “Eleanor” for taking his dog to the beach though.

Lewis Hamilton’s Supercar Collection

Mercedes-Benz has provided Lewis Hamilton with some slick speedsters, but sometimes you have to enjoy what’s out there from the competition (or perhaps your future team). Here are the sweet supercars in the Formula One Champion’s car collection.

McLaren P1

Another homage to his time with McLaren comes in the form of Hamilton’s McLaren P1. While the Mercedes marketing team probably wasn’t very pleased with this purchase in 2015, it’s hard not to pick the P1 up if you’re able to. A 3.8L twin-turbocharged V8 paired with an electric motor that together can rocket the P1 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 217 mph. It’s also a nice pairing to his McLaren F1 since it’s technically the model’s successor.

Pagani Zonda 760 LH

Lewis Hamilton unfortunately no longer owns a Pagani as he claims it was “best-sounding car I own, but handling-wise it’s the worst.” The one he had was pretty special though as it was custom tailored for Lewis Hamilton, the Pagani Zonda 760 LH. Pagani put together five custom order versions of the Zonda 760 and individually labeled them according to their owners. In more unfortunate news, the billionaire who purchased the Zonda 760 LH crashed it in 2023. What a super expensive bummer.

Ferrari 599 GTO

The writing may have been right there on the wall for Lewis Hamilton and his departure from Mercedes in the form of the various Ferraris in his collection. The first was his Ferrari 599 GTO that he’s had since 2010, one of his first big car purchases after making it in Formula 1. Hamilton’s decided against the Ferrari Rosso Corsa red and instead opted for a black paint job. The track ready 6.0L V12 under the hood probably sounded pretty good to Hamilton while he owned it. He has since sold this Ferrari, but the other three are still rumored to be in his garage.

Ferrari 599 SA Aperta

The Ferrari 599 GTO was rare already with only 599 being produced, but Hamilton took things a step further and picked up the Ferrari 599 SA Aperta. Only 80 versions of this targa topped 599 were ever produced and they also feature the same performance found in the GTO versions. These things already fetch a pretty high price, so we’ll see some insane bigs should the one owned by Lewis Hamilton ever reach the auction block.

Ferrari LaFerrari

If you are going to own a Ferrari, it may as well be the one dubbed “The Ferrari”. Hamilton not only owns a Ferrari LaFerrari, but two different ones. Just 500 examples of the LaFerrari were produced featuring a 6.3L V12 engine paired with an electric motor to generate 949 prancing ponies. Hamilton liked the model so much, he figured he’d enjoy it even more with the roof gone. His LaFerrari Aperta pairs nicely with both his 599 SA Aperta and his coupe LaFerrari, but it is also pretty rare with only 210 being produced. One thing is for sure, once Lewis Hamilton dawns the Rosso Corsa red racing suit, he’ll have to find himself a couple more iconic Ferraris like the F40 and Enzo to join his collection.
