National LEGO Day is January 28th! So, let’s celebrate by putting together one of these awesome LEGO Technic cars!

Let’s Build LEGO Technic Cars!

January 28th is LEGO Day and what better way to celebrate the building toy than picking some of our favorite Lego builds. However, this time around we’ll be focusing on just the “big kid” LEGO sets, better known as Technic. These complex LEGO sets don’t feature your typical brick though, they instead use a bunch of unique plastic components that are similar to the ones found in LEGO Bionicle sets. We looked through LEGO’s catalog and narrowed it down to just 10 of our favorite LEGO Technic cars. Who knows, maybe you can match one of these sets to a car in your very own garage!

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

The Jeep Wrangler is an off-roading icon with a devout group of followers who have created their own special wave. If you’re a true Jeep fan, then why not build one from scratch with the Technic Jeep Wrangler Rubicon set? This LEGO Technic car features everything you’d expect in a Jeep Wrangler. It has a working independent suspension, large knobby tires, a winch, large fenders, the Rubicon logo on the hood, and it’s of course driving with the top off.

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

The Corvette is an American made sports car that was in a league of its own. It only recently switched to being a mid-engine setup to fit better in the category of Ferraris and Lamborghinis. But we can still fondly remember the front-engine rear-wheel-drive in a smaller LEGO form. The Technic Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 set features an orange Corvette with the ZR1’s spoiler, black accents, quad exhaust tip, and a V8 engine. This model can also be reconfigured into a rat rod Ford Model T, which feels a little blasphemous in hindsight.

McLaren Senna GTR

McLaren has a long history of high-performance racing under its belt and the McLaren Senna exemplifies that in its supercar status. However, the LEGO Technic car isn’t just any McLaren Senna, it’s the GTR. The McLaren Senna GTR is a conceptual track beast that carries a price tag of $1.7 million. That’s pretty hefty, but luckily, its LEGO version is a mere $49.99. The set has all the racing aerodynamics and a similar paint scheme to the concept vehicle. While it does show off a mid-engine V8, I can’t quite tell which part is supposed to be the twin turbos.

Ferrari 488 GTE “AF Corse #51”

Everyone likes to look at Ferraris on posters or in magazines, but not everyone can afford them. So, the Ferrari 488 GTE “AF Corse #51” LEGO Technic car set will be a wonderful addition any car enthusiast’s “someday” shrine to Ferrari. This Technic set features the racing variant of the Ferrari 488. The car has tons of logos, a full aero kit, and comes in that well known Ferrari red.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS

LEGO has an affinity for Porsches, as they have made 8 different sets dedicated to the brand. The largest of the many Porsche LEGO sets is the Porsche 911 GT3 RS Technic one. This set contains 2704 pieces and looks as close to the real thing (besides a couple panel gaps and missing glass). Like the real life one, the Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS features a large rear spoiler, a specially design hood, and even has similarly styled seats. The best part about this model is the dual-clutch transmission featuring a working shift knob and working paddle shifters.

Land Rover Defender

Are you a Land Rover fan? LEGO has got you covered with the LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender. This set brings the latest generation of the Defender to you in LEGO form. It has an inline 6-cylinder engine, working transmission, and has all the components to outfit it for a safari expedition. The tires aren’t nearly as off-road oriented as the Jeep model is, but it still has a nice suspension for getting over little obstacles.

Dom’s Dodge Charger

Are you big on the Fast & Furious movies like I am? Then check out this recreation of Dom’s 1970 Dodge Charger R/T from the first film. The LEGO Technic car set brings all of the awesome components that made this blacked out classic muscle car the movie icon it is today. It has the big block V8 with the blower sticking out of the hood, nitrous bottles in the trunk, and it even has a piece that makes the car look like it’s doing a wheelestand. This model isn’t going to be twisting its chassis off the line making 9 second quarter miles, but it’s still a cool desk piece.

Top Gear Rally Car

Of all the LEGO Technic cars, the Top Gear Rally Car set is the only one that is actually “drivable”. This set not only comes with a Top Gear inspired rally car design, but it also has electric motors that power and steer the toy via a phone app. The Top Gear Rally Car isn’t specific in model or manufacturer, but it somewhat resembles a Ford Focus RS or a Subaru WRX STI hatchback. The only thing that would have made this set any better is a Stig LEGO Minifigure to go along with it.

Customized Pick up Truck

People who love trucks, love to customize their trucks by lifting them, putting on huge tires, and whatever other parts suit their style. LEGO brought that same truck idea to their Technic Customized Pick up Truck set. This truck set comes with big off-roading wheels, a lifted suspension, roof mounted spotlights, smoke stacks, and a bull bar with a winch. If you take away all the custom components, the truck design itself almost looks like a square body Chevy K10. Whatever this truck is, it’s ready to do some prerunning and mudding in the backyard.

Car Transporter

KITT the Knight Rider Car

Most of these LEGO Technic car sets feature a lone car design, but the Car Transporter set brings you multiple car designs and works great as a place to showcase some of your other sets. There’s two ways to go about building this set. The first is a cabover semi truck with a car hauler trailer that comes with a blue V8 sports car that looks a lot like a Chevrolet Camaro. The other option changes the Camaro into a single axle semi tow truck hauling a trailer, while the cabover and car hauler trailer morph into a parts cargo van and a hot-rodded Chevy Bel Air looking beast.
