The Next Generation of Civic is Almost Here
Hitting dealerships this summer, the all-new 2022 Honda Civic looks ready to improve on its long-running reputation for excellence. Fresh sheet metal, more features, and improved performance come together in this 11th generation compact sedan. The hatchback reveal is expected soon, though the coupe body style is no longer.
Honda’s Changes to the Civic
Previous Honda Civics had a somewhat polarizing look with a host of character lines, faux vents, and generally busy look. For 2022, the sedan leans into a simpler, more elegant design. Aiming for “thin and light”, Honda pushed the bottom of the windshield pillar back almost two inches to elongate the hood. They also stretched the wheelbase 1.4 inches and widened the rear track slightly. It adds up to a more athletic, purposeful stance.
Building on that approach, occupants will find better outward visibility thanks to a lowered beltline and flat dashboard. Materials and layout are uncluttered inside with a new, mesh panel running from instrument binnacle to passenger door. It not only looks upmarket, the climate vents are hidden behind it for a clean look.
With the New Comes Some Old
Though the design is new, under the hood you’ll find carryover motors with minor improvements. The naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 158 horsepower, but adds standard idle-stop technology for improved fuel economy. Four horses are added to the 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, now making 180 horsepower. VTEC has been put into action on the exhaust valves in the name of better efficiency.
On the efficiency front, both motors pick up a few extra miles per gallon of fuel economy, depending on trim. The LX is estimated to achieve 31 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. With the turbocharged engine, a new Civic EX should hit 33 mpg and 42 mpg for city and highway figures, respectively. You won’t be driving that efficiency with a manual however. It is gone, replaced with a CVT across the board. However, the stick is expected to show up with Si and Type R models down the road.
Updated Tech In the 2022 Honda Civic
The latest in tech is assumed in today’s new cars, and the 2022 Honda Civic does not disappoint. Entry-level trims now have a standard 7-inch infotainment touchscreen interface fitted with Android Auto and Apple Car Play software. A 9-inch screen with wireless smartphone integration can be found higher up the trim structure, like the Civic Touring. That larger screen is the widest version found in any Honda model. A thoughtful touch is the small “finger rest” located just under the screen making it easier to operate.
Opting for the top-tier Touring trim will net an entirely digital, LCD instrument panel measuring 10.2 inches. Other models receive a combo digital-analog setup with a 7-inch screen. Other tech amenities like Qi wireless charging and Bose audio system will be available. The Bose stereo is custom engineered for the new Civic interior and toots its own horn through a whopping 12 speakers.
The 2022 Honda Civic Keeps Getting Better
Civic’s are known for nimble handling, which Honda has kept in mind by stiffening the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, updating suspension components and retuning the steering. Along with the wider rear track and a new, driver-selectable Sport mode, the 2022 Honda Civic should competently carry the handling torch forward.
The beefed up ACE body doubles as a safety enhancement, designed to meet present and anticipated future safety standards. As well, new front airbags were developed to reduce injuries in a crash. The lineup standard, Honda Sensing, suite of driver aids has also been upgraded. A new, wide-view front camera, traffic jam assistance, and faster processing speed are just a few of these enhancements.
Overall, the new 2022 Honda Civic represents a leap forward in looks, performance, and features. Though official pricing has not been released, it is expected to be similar to last year’s model. Keep an eye out for the new Civic at Honda dealerships in summer of this year.
