Fisker Ocean Beats Tesla Model Y Range

The next major contender in EVs, the Fisker Ocean, is poised to arrive in the US and this all-electric SUV already boasts the segment’s best range.

Range Anxious No More

Amidst today’s boom in EVs, it is not easy to keep track of which EV startups look most promising, which are thriving, and which are struggling. Fisker, the one-time maker of the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid luxury sedan, is something of a combination of all three. And in case you forgot about Fisker altogether, allow new numbers from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to remind you that this would-be Tesla rival just might have the goods. That is judging from the Fisker Ocean’s new EPA range estimate of 360 miles on a single charge. That is 30 miles better than the Tesla Model Y Long Range, the Ocean’s natural competitor.

So, what is the Fisker Ocean? And what is its appeal in the increasingly competitive EV segment?

What is the Fisker Ocean?

The Ocean is a stylish all-electric compact crossover from the California-based carmaker Fisker. Though headquartered in California, Fisker has partnered with manufacturer Magna Steyr to build the Ocean over in Austria, and deliveries began in Europe in late 2022. Now, Fisker is in the process of bringing the Ocean State-side, shooting for a fall release. Part of that process means getting official EPA numbers for the Ocean.

The results from the EPA put the dual-motor top-trim Fisker Ocean Extreme at the top of the EV SUV heap at an estimated 360 miles of range on a single charge of its 113-kWh battery. That bests both the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Tesla Model Y, its targeted competition.

Trims & Powertrains

The Ocean will be offered initially in five trims, starting with the Ocean Sport at $39,000 (plus destination fee). It is that price point, combined with the Ocean’s attractive design and promising powertrain, that make it at least a reasonable rival to the Tesla Model Y. As the Ocean’s base model, the Sport comes with a single electric motor sending 275 horsepower to the front wheels. That is enough power for a zero to sixty run of 6.9 seconds.

At the other end of the trim spectrum are the Ocean Extreme and Ocean Ultra, both starting at around $70,500. These carry an electric motor front and back, offering all-wheel drive and 550 horsepower. That means the Ocean Extreme will be capable of keeping pace with its quickest rivals with a zero to sixty sprint of 3.6 seconds.

Looks & Interior

It is not just an efficient powertrain that makes the Fisker Ocean a contender. Fisker’s founder, Henrik Fisker designed cars for BMW, Aston Martin, and Ford before founding the company that bears his name. The Ocean’s aesthetics are a clean and focused mix of EV futurism and contemporary automotive design. Its high belt line is reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender. The Ocean’s “California” mode, which allows for all windows, including the rear quarter windows, and the panoramic sunroof to retract, makes for open air driving just this side of the Jeep Wrangler. The illuminated Fisker badge is there to remind onlookers that this crossover runs on batteries.

Inside the Ocean, we find a cabin very much like that of the Tesla Model Y, highly refined and defiantly minimalistic, dominated by a 17.1-inch infotainment touchscreen. Materials look high-quality and are in fact largely made from recycled, environmentally sustainable materials like recycled T-shirts supply cloth for the dashboard, fishing nets for the carpet, and vegan faux leather for the seats.

High Potential

The Fisker Ocean certainly looks like a potential contender within the growing EV segment. It has segment leading range, an attractive and compelling design, and the added selling point of “sustainability” behind it. The question remains whether Fisker can convince EV shoppers they are a desirable alternative to the latest from Hyundai/Kia, Tesla, and other startups like Lucid and Rivian.

Look for the Fisker Ocean to arrive in the US this fall.
