Sneak Peek: Hyundai’s Mind-Blowing Electric N Concepts

Hyundai unveils two exciting new concepts that push the boundaries of what’s possible with electric propulsion.

Hyundai recently pulled the sheets off two new concept cars, the RN22e and the N Vision 74, in a showcase of the company’s approach to upcoming performance EVs. The brand’s N designation stands for “Never Just Drive,” and judging from these latest concept cars, it’s clear Hyundai is intent on bring the same level of engagement to their electric offerings that they have to cars like the Veloster N.

And it’s not just the cars’ performance numbers that tantalize, either. Lately, Hyundai/Kia have been consistently delivering innovative and provocative designs (the exquisite IONIQ 5 as exhibit A) and these new concepts continue that trend. The N Vision 74 is especially stunning, and though it’s only a concept, we hope Hyundai is wise enough to eventually evolve it into a streetcar.

We’ll start off with the more familiar looking of the two concepts, the RN22e. As you might have guessed, the RN22e is derived from the IONIQ 6, with a wing, other aero bits, and the rear doors deleted (presumably for weight savings). The funny name helps explain Hyundai’s approach to these two concept cars and breaks down, according to Hyundai, to “Rolling lab for the N brand in 2022 electric.” Both this and the N Vision 74 are intended to test out all manner of EV-related performance technologies.

Hyundai says the RN22e is testing the limits of what’s possible, in terms of handling, with heavier EVs. One way they’re doing this is with “torque vectoring by twin clutch” which sounds intriguing not least because this is an electric car and therefore doesn’t use a traditional transmission. But Hyundai says this means the RN22e can redistribute power from wheel to wheel more quickly.

The RN22e has a dual motor set up combining for 577 horsepower and 546 lb ft of torque. Power comes courtesy of a 77.4 kWh battery pack. Braking is provided by four-piston calipers and 15.75-inch rotors.

N Vision 74

The N Vision 74 draws its retro-future design from a Giorgetto Giugiaro concept, the Hyundai Pony Coupe, from 1974. Giugiaro credited with dozens of influential designs, including the distinctive wedge designs of the the DeLorean DMC-12, the Lotus Esprit, and the De Tomaso Mangusta. It’s from these cars, and the Pony concept, that the N Vision 74 draws its inspiration. Of course, the N Vision 74 incorporates Hyundai’s current EV design language, including those signature pixelated headlights and plenty of right angles.

However, the N Vision 74 isn’t just cutting-edge when it comes to looks. That’s because the N Vison 74 isn’t just an old EV, it’s a hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid. Two rear motors (that’s right, it’s a dedicated rear-wheel drive car) are powered by a 62.4 kWh battery pack and a 10-lb hydrogen tank paired with its own 85 kWh battery stack. These provide the N Vision 64 with 671 horsepower and 664 lb ft of torque and up to 373 miles of range.

These two concepts from Hyundai demonstrate that performance EVs aren’t doomed to only impress when driving in a straight line, sophisticated handling and traffic-stopping good looks are also on the menu.
