Here is a list of the current top 10 longest range electric cars, a ranking that is sure to be ever-changing in the burgeoning EV arena.

The Top 10 Most Efficient Electric Cars

The race amongst automakers to claim the Longest Range Electric Car title is on, with the finish line a constantly moving target. Just 10 short years ago, the Nissan Leaf was boasting 73 miles of all-electric range. Today that figure has jumped to over 200 miles, which doesn’t even earn it a spot on today’s list. From relatively ancient Mercedes-Benz to slick Silicon Valley upstart Rivian, the competition is fierce and all over the map.

Mammoth conglomerate Stellantis has announced plans to spend staggering sums on a company-wide 180 into the EV-verse, which you can read about here. Volkswagen is resurrecting the hippie-fave Microbus with the oddly named ID.Buzz that we dive into here. And while most of this wave of newcomers features vehicles that require a corded plug to “fuel up”, there are folks that feel an automated battery swapping infrastructure is the way of the future.

It’s early days in this seismic shift in the car industry, so no one can state with certainty who the winners and losers will be down the road. A 500-mile range sounds incredible today but will that be laughable by 2030? Hard saying. At the moment however, we can look at the cream of the EV crop to see who offers the most all-electric range.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring: 516-mile range, 131 MPGe

Hip California start-up Lucid currently offers the longest range electric car with their Air sedan that cracks the 500-mile barrier. While the Lucid Air appears to be aping Tesla with their low-slung styling, there is more than meets the eye here. For one, Lucid began as a battery company that currently supplies the juice for electric race car series. Once they set their sights on passenger vehicles, the Air was unleashed boasting a 900-volt charging architecture and 34 inches of cockpit display screens. Grand Touring trim, which is still taking reservations, touts a 516-mile range and eye-watering price tag of $139,000.

2022 Tesla Model S: 405-mle range, 120 MPGe

Tesla has performed an impressive feat with the Model S – it is both a relative EV stalwart and simultaneously one of the most sought after on the market. The new Plaid model touts outrageous performance metrics like 1000+ horsepower and a 0-60 mph sprint under two seconds. But the base Model S gets you the most range at 405 miles, which is still an incredible figure even in comparison to the Lucid Air. It features a video-game-like yoke to steer with and 10 teraflops of processing power to play actual video games on the large rear display screen. Like the top-dog Lucid, it is not cheap starting at $100,000, but man is it fast.

2022 Tesla Model 3 Long Range: 358-mile range, 131 MPGe

From here on out, we find EVs with a range below 400 miles but above 300, which is more than ample for the average American commute of 39 miles. The Tesla Model 3, which we cover in-depth here, is something of a bargain with its $54,990 entry price and over 350-mile range. You can spend more for the hot-rod Performance model but this dual-motor base Model 3 still rips to 60 in 4.2 seconds. It also features much of the same tech as its stablemates like available full self-driving capability and 200 miles of charge in 15 minutes via the exclusive Tesla Supercharger network.

2022 Tesla Model X: 351-mile range, 102 MPGe

If you’re sensing a Tesla theme here, you’d be correct. Elon Musk’s wildly different approach to making cars is clearly working, as the Model X nearly matches the Model 3 range-wise while sporting those bonkers Falcon Wing doors. The price tag starts over six figures, but you have the option for seven seats with this particular Tesla that also features a massive panoramic windshield. Other highlights include a 17-inch digital gauge cluster and 12-inch infotainment touchscreen.

2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+: 350-mile range, 97 MPGe

The new EQS 450+ wades into the EV waters in classic Mercedes-Benz fashion, practically bursting with luxury. LED lighting in the dashboard, doors and seats can immerse you in 64 different colors, the ventilation system delivers aromatherapy, a 56-inch span of “MBUX Hyperscreen” can handle all your entertainment dreams and even the rear seats can be fully climatized. That Mercedes’ first EV to arrive as part of their incoming EQ electrified lineup can go 350 miles on a charge makes it clear the German automaker is not goofing around. Unsurprisingly, it will be expensive with a sticker that starts at $102,000.

2022 GMC Hummer EV 3X: 350-mile range, 47 MPGe

As only Hummer can do, here is a $100,000 land yacht that weighs over 9,000 pounds and can dance diagonally in CrabWalk mode – on batteries. See that 47 MPGe figure? It is hands down the lowest rated vehicle on this list for that metric. MPGe is the EPA’s method for rating alternative-fuel vehicle energy efficiency relative to their gas-powered counterparts. So you have to hand it to General Motors, their Ultium battery technology is clearly impressive. How else could such an inefficient vehicle achieve a 350-mile range?

2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range: 330-mile range, 122 MPGe

While the Tesla Model Y Long Range has the “lowest” range of the four Tesla models for sale, it is still rated for a range of well over 300 miles. Looking like a scaled-down version of its Model X stablemate, the Model Y can seat up to seven and hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds under dual motor, AWD power. That’s seriously quick for any vehicle. It also sports a glass roof, wireless charging for two phones and special “vegan leather” as part of Tesla’s stated goal of sustainability.

2022 BMW iX xDrive50: 324-mile range, 86 MPGe

BMW has joined the bandwagon of creating an EV-only subrand with their new iX lineup that features the hardest to remember alphanumeric nameplate soup in automotive history. The xDrive50 is an X5-sized trucklet running a dual-motor AWD setup good for 516 horsepower and well over 300 miles of range. Like Mercedes, the new BMW EV comes with two years of complimentary charging via Electrify America’s network. Uniquely cool features include the ShyTech background systems like radiant heating in the doors and a 30-speaker stereo from Bowers & Wilkins that promises a “4D audio-tactile” experience thanks to speakers embedded in the seats. Hmm.

2022 Rivian R1T Large Pack: 314-mile range, 70 MPGe

The hipster glamper to Hummer’s all beef bro-dozer, Rivian can claim the first EV pickup truck to market award with their all-new R1T, a full review of which you can read here. It can be outfitted with a standard, large or max size battery pack but only the large version has been officially rated by the EPA with a 314-mile range. Rivian estimates the max pack will be good for over 400 miles, so we’ll keep an eye on that. The R1T is full of statistics that don’t normally apply to a single vehicle like 36-inches of water fording ability, an 11,000-pound towing capacity and a 0-60 mph sprint in about 3 seconds. It will also feature semi-autonomous hands-free highway driving tech and a trick storage tunnel that runs full-width between the cab and cargo bed.

2022 Kia EV6 Wind RWD: 310-mile range, 117 MPGe

With a 310-mile range, 117 MPGe rating and $47,000 entry price, the new Kia EV6 should be on the radar of anyone searching “longest range electric car.” True, it does not have the headlining range of a Lucid Air, but what it does have is Kia’s trademark blend of features and value. You can easily run an average daily commute in the EV6, while enjoying climatized seats, dual 12” displays, a 14-speaker stereo from Meridian and nearly two dozen driver-assistance systems. That it boasts Kia’s famous 10-year/100,000-mile warranty on the battery is the icing on this relatively inexpensive EV cake.
