Ford has put all their chips on the Mustang nameplate to launch their Mach-E Electric SUV and it’s going to be a bet that pays off.

What’s New for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Take a look around the vast landscape of electric vehicles and you’ll notice that no other brand that’s as big as Ford is building a car that competes with Tesla as well as the Mustang Mach-E does. Audi, Jaguar, Porsche, Kia, and others all have released EVs, but none of them can go toe to toe as easily. This new breed of Mustang is comparable in terms of price, performance, range, and perhaps even better in terms of quality.

Unlike most other vehicles of the same size, it handles exceptionally well, and ultimately we’re pretty impressed by this first EV offering from the blue oval boys. Material quality inside is really nice for the price point and feels more like the second generation of the vehicle thanks to its well-thought-out features. After taking a look at the Mustang Mach-E, it’s clear that Ford put all their chips on the table during its development. We can’t wait to for the Mach-E GT which should have even more horsepower, a vital part of any Mustang’s DNA.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Powertrain

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is currently available with two different battery packs in two different configurations. First, there’s a 68 kWh pack with a range of 230 miles when driving just the rear wheels and 211 when driving all four. Then there’s an 88 kWh pack that will push range to 305 miles when rear-wheel-drive only and 270 miles when pushing power to all four.

Horsepower for the smaller pack is rated at 266 regardless of whether you want two hooves or four clawing at the pavement. What’s interesting is that, when opting for the larger pack that’s different not the same case. The 88 kWh RWD model makes 290 horsepower while the AWD variant is boosted to 346. Of course, the upcoming GT model will demolish both with nearly 470 horsepower.

The Mach E features that thrill-ride style instant torque throughout the model range, and that’s important. Tesla doesn’t employ that type of motor in the single motor Model Y and Model 3, which has resulted in some disappointed customers. Ford won’t have that issue. In addition, the Mach-E handles so much better than we could’ve guessed it would. Ford clearly took full advantage of the uber-low center of gravity and it shows in how well balanced the SUV is even in hard corners. It’s playful, it’s spritely, and it never feels like it’s out of its depth. In other words, it’s a Mustang.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Electric Range & Charge Speed

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has consistently beaten its EPA estimates regardless of format. That’s a welcome change from some notable foibles from other brands in recent memory. Thanks to its ability to use 150 kW DC fast chargers, the Ford can pick up about 60 miles of range in just 10 minutes. There are very few EVs that can beat the 300-mile mark, but this one can do it regularly for less cash than the rest.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

There’s a lot of good to say about the inside of this SUV. It’s incredibly stable over bumps, bruises, and cracked pavement. You won’t notice a single squeak, rattle, or creak anywhere. We love the very ergonomic layout and clean styling choices made here.

For the more passionate drivers among us, the seating could use more bolstering and taller drivers will perhaps miss the extendable thigh support from other Ford models. The Mach-E has been noted for being a bit noisy on the highway, but that seems like an issue Ford knows about because the Premium model with sound-insulating windows will dispatch the problem easily.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E will really be a hit for those who take advantage of the large cargo space inside. At some 29 feet, it’s not as big as Model Y, but it’s outstanding in terms of flexibility thanks to the fold-down seats. The rear cargo area provides 29.7 cu-ft of room and extends to 59.7 cu-ft with the rear seats folded down. The center console is cavernous too.

Entertainment & Technology

We could go on and on about the tech in this vehicle, but we’ll focus on just a few features that really demonstrate how good this car is. First, the integration with your smartphone is outstanding. Each Ford Mustang Mach-E can be set up with 5 different driver profiles that are ultimately tied to each person’s smartphone. When drivers approach and get in, the Mach-E will configure its screens, the driver’s seat, and the climate control to their personal preferences. Then it will change the range estimate based on what it’s learned about how they drive. It can even adapt based on the route, adding range when descending in elevation and reducing it when climbing.

The sound system is great and it’s tied to another incredible feature in the center screen. You’ll notice that there’s one physical control and it’s the volume dial. Ask any other company (ahem, Honda) what customers think when you sell them a car that doesn’t have a volume knob and they’ll tell you how unhappy those customers were. Ford works around this problem by bonding a knob to the touchscreen that has a capacitive surface constantly touching the screen underneath the wheel itself, so users get the tactile feedback and functionality of a normal volume dial.

Safety Features

The Mach E is currently undergoing crash test ratings, but we expect it to do well thanks to multiple safety features that are standard on every trim level including Adaptive Cruise Control, Frontal Collision Mitigation, Lane Centering, Rear Parking Sensors, and Blind Spot Monitoring.

What we think

It would be easy to take Ford to task for using such a sacred nameplate on an SUV and an electrified one at that, but ultimately that would be just plain wrong. Mustangs have been one of the most prolific and adaptive animals in the history of North America and this new breed from Ford is a fitting tribute. Growth and adaptation can be painful, but with the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, we bet most customers will find it quite inspiring.
