Chevrolet has discontinued two Blazer trims, both the L and the LT, for 2022. Part of that is due to their deletion of the base four-cylinder engine that was featured in both trims for 2021. Now, a more powerful 2.0-liter engine is standard, plus all 2022 Chevrolet Blazers fitted with that engine and all-wheel-drive will automatically come with the Trailering Package. In addition, two-tone paint is available on some models and two new additional colors, Nitro Yellow Metallic and Blue Glow Metallic, become available.
Fantastic styling
Above-average power
Complimentary maintenance
Lackluster interior quality
Not a fuel-sipper
Low cargo space
Can we have a RWD model?
We really like the powertrain in the 2022 Chevy Blazer. Last year’s base engine was a bore, so it’s nice to see it gone in favor of more refined power. The new base 2.0L turbocharged I4 engine makes 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. We get the feeling that there’s quite a bit of power left on the table from the little engine too. It never seems to strain or struggle.
The V6 is better, but just barely. It’s rated at 308 horsepower and just 270 lb-ft of torque. From a stoplight, it’s actually pretty tough to tell which is which. It’s only on the highway or at higher RPMs where the V6 really steps out and leaves the 2.0-liter in the dust. The extra horsepower makes a big difference there on open roads.
The nine-speed automatic fitted to both engines is very good. It’s fast to swap gears and smooth around town. If we had any complaints, it’s that the Blazer will sometimes not want to downshift as quickly as others. Steering feedback is notably muted compared to other GM products, but above most competitors in this mid-size SUV space.
Pedal feedback is fine, but nothing special. Handling is certainly a standout though. While the front-wheel-drive Chevrolet Blazer will plow into corners when pushed really hard, the all-wheel-drive version does a far better job of keeping the car pointed where you want it to go, but never steps out from the rear.
The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer can get up to 29 mpg on the highway when equipped with the smaller 2.0-liter engine and front-wheel drive. That setup also achieves 22 mpg in the city. Pick any other configuration and those numbers drop. Combined, the V6 with all-wheel drive drops to just 21 mpg. That’s not going to help it stand out in a crowded market that features some hybrid competition as well.
The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer is very much a person hauler. The front seats are very comfortable, spacious, and well laid out. Visibility is questionable for a vehicle of this size though. It sincerely feels like the sportiest SUV at this kind of price point, and that includes the sports car-like visibility. Some of that though comes down to its fairly stiff suspension and ride control. Some drivers will love it. For others, it could easily end up being a bit of a deal-breaker. After all, this is an SUV, not a sports car.
The Blazer’s rear seats are a bit underwhelming for taller adults, but beyond that, they’ll do nicely. Depending on trim level, the rear seats can be heated and that’s a big plus. There’s a storage bin between the seats and more space in the door pockets too. The trunk is not as cavernous as some of its competition though. 30.5 cubic feet of cargo space might sound like a lot on paper, but it’s tough to actually fill up without seeing gear spill over into the rear seats.
We love the big 8-inch infotainment system found in every 2022 Chevrolet Blazer. This sort of screen should be the bare minimum across the industry. It’s quick, it’s easy to use, and it has standard features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. A Wi-Fi hotspot, GPS navigation, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system can be added as well.
However, climate control could be improved. It seems slow to react and slow to achieve the temperatures requested. The heated and ventilated front seats do a good job though. They’ll hold passengers over as they wait on the ambient temp to adjust.
We can’t tell you how happy we are about the standard advanced driver’s assistance systems present in the new 2022 Chevrolet Blazer. Every single one will come with automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and more. Adaptive cruise can be added too. The Blazer also has a five-star crash test rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS.
Buyers who pick up the new base level 2022 Chevrolet Blazer will get the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine mentioned above, a nine-speed automatic, and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive and the larger 3.6-liter V6 are each available options throughout the lineup. The 2LT will start out with 18-inch wheels, four USB ports, cruise control, and an 8-inch infotainment system. It also gets lane-departure warning, forward collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assist.
The 3LT adds heated front seats, heated mirrors, a power liftgate, and leather upholstery. It also adds rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring.
The RS uses the 308-horsepower V6 standard and adds 20-inch wheels, a heated steering wheel, a 120-volt power outlet, an upgraded infotainment system with integrated GPS navigation, and special exterior styling touches.
The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer Premier goes back to the 2.0-liter engine, but adds chrome and silver exterior trim. It also features the same upgrades as the RS aside from the standard V6 engine and styling cues.
Chevrolet has long offered a 3-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty coupled to a 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty with their vehicles. That’s no different here with the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer. What is different is that instead of a single, almost laughable, complimentary maintenance visit, Chevrolet is covering all maintenance for the first year of Blazer ownership. Bravo Chevrolet.

For the money, the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer shouldn’t be the only vehicle anyone considers. Many competitors offer more warranty coverage, more space, or other features. Still, it’s one of the best driving SUVs at this price and size. In a year or two, a lightly used AWD RS model might be a killer deal.
