2022 Mitsubishi Mirage Review: The 2022 Mirage is an affordable subcompact that gets great fuel economy at the expense of an ultra-weak engine.
For 2022, the Mitsubishi Mirage’s Carbonite Edition model has been replaced by the Black Edition which features sporty interior and exterior design accents including black-painted 15-inch wheels, red trim around the grille and an integrated roof spoiler. The Black Edition can also be equipped with automatic windshield wipers and headlamps. These features are also optional on the top SE model.

Great fuel efficiency
Long warranty coverage
Large cargo capacity in hatchback model
Slow acceleration
Noisy engine at highway speeds
Low quality interior
This engine can’t compete with its rivals
All models of the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage are front-wheel drive and are powered by a 78-horsepower 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. That’s a pretty weak engine—even for a subcompact—and you’ll find that most of its rivals like the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent can produce more power and speed.
The base trim comes with a five-speed manual transmission, but all other models are equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission. The Mirage is suited more for city streets than the highway as acceleration is slow and laborious resulting in a great deal of engine noise and vibration within the cabin. The ride quality is fine on smooth roads, but larger bumps and potholes will send noticeable vibrations through the cabin.

The Mirage’s weak engine does produce one positive—great fuel economy. And it’s no surprise it made our critics’ choice of great fuel efficiency under $20,000 with these numbers: models with the CVT get an estimated 36 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway. Models with the manual transmission see a slight decrease with 33 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.
You get what you pay for with the interior of the Mirage. There’s nothing upscale about this subcompact with lots of hard plastics throughout and an underwhelming design. The front seats are fine for short treks, but adults might be a little claustrophobic in the rear seats.
The hatchback model gives you 17.1 cubic feet of room behind the second row and 47 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down making it one of the more spacious subcompact cars on the market.
The Mirage left us pleasantly surprised with its entertainment and technology offerings. All models come standard with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a four-speaker audio system, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen that is easy to operate. A Rockford Fosgate premium stereo system is an available upgrade if you want a more quality sound.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage earned an overall safety rating of four out of five stars from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Standard driver-assist features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera. The top-level SE model comes with lane-departure warning and automatic high-beam headlights.
The ES trim is available in a hatchback or sedan body and comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission, with the option of a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a four-speaker stereo system, Bluetooth, a USB port, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, automatic climate control, keyless entry, a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection.
The LE trim also comes in either a sedan or hatchback body, but the CVT is standard. It adds 14-inch alloy wheels and a leather-wrapped shift knob.
The Black Edition comes in either a sedan or hatchback body style and gets several interior and exterior cosmetic upgrades. As the name suggests, this model gets dark exterior accents including a black roof spoiler, black exterior mirrors, and 15-inch alloy wheel finished in black. It also gets red grille accents, red interior accents, fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
The top-level SE trim is available in sedan and hatchback body types and adds partial synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a driver’s seat armrest, automatic high-beam LED headlights, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, and lane departure warning.
Mitsubishi offers one of the best warranties in the industry, right up there with Kia and Hyundai. The Mirage has a limited warranty covering five years or 60,000 miles, and a powertrain warranty covering 10 years or 100,000 miles. There is no complimentary maintenance.

We’d say the 2022 Mirage checks most of the boxes as Mitsubishi’s entry level car. It’s budget price and great fuel economy make it affordable for most first-time buyers and Mitsubishi was generous with standard technology and safety features. The engine is laughable, though, and at 78 horsepower we feel there are many other better subcompact options out there that will leave the Mirage in the dust.
