What do our experts think of the 2023 Volvo S60? We look at powertrain, interior options, trim levels, and more. Find out our thoughts here.
The 2023 Volvo S60 has a lot of changes over the 2022 model. The trim levels are all renamed and now include Core, Plus, and Ultimate. Volvo added a few tiny changes to the interior and exterior and added new wheel designs but the biggest shift is the addition of a Google-based infotainment system. Finally, the USB-A ports are gone in favor of USB-C ports.

Volvo sells the S60 with two distinct powertrains. The first is dubbed the B5 and it comes with a 247 hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can select from either a front-wheel drive version or an all-wheel drive version. It’s a pretty simplistic driving experience as the engine and gearbox are smooth, quiet, and somewhat uninspiring.
Thankfully, those that desire more power can get it with any of the Recharge models. They come with what Volvo calls the T8 powertrain. It includes the same engine and transmission from the B5 but this time includes plug-in hybrid components for a total of 455 hp. That makes it the most powerful Volvo of all time.
Despite the extra power, it’s not exactly a beast to drive. It’s still very smooth and very serene. Even the Polestar Engineered isn’t super sharp but we do enjoy the upgraded Brembo brakes and the Ohlins dampers.
According to the EPA, the Volvo S60 gets up to 26 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway when equipped with the gas-only B5 engine. Swap over to the PHEV T8 Recharge powertrain and you’ll get 74 MPGe combined including up to 41 miles of all-electric range. That makes it possible for many folks to have an all-electric commute and then only use the gas engine for longer trips.
The S60 is sort of a dark horse in the premium sedan space. The interior is incredibly well-appointed and we don’t just mean in terms of fit and finish. The materials feel great to the touch and look great to the eyes.
The cabin is modern, sleek, and attractive as well as spacious. Those factors make for a place that will impress just about any passenger save those with their own six-figure sedans.
There are nice little touches too. We like the twist-to-start knob in the center console and the Crystal gear selector. There’s also a little tab on the inside of the windshield for people to stick, say, a parking permit. It’s a small touch but it’s nice.
The middle-rear seat is perhaps the only real drawback as legroom is a bit tight. The trunk offers 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space which isn’t horrible or outstanding.
Every S60 uses the same 9-inch vertically-oriented touchscreen with some Google integration. It’s one of the snappiest we’ve used and we love the various methods of control available. The touchscreen itself responds quickly but Volvo also included a physical volume knob and a ‘home’ button along with the steering wheel buttons which is a great touch.
In addition, Google’s native voice control is very fast and accurate. Finally, those that prefer it can use either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The stock 10-speaker sound system is good but Volvo also offers upgraded versions from Harman Kardon along with Bowers & Wilkins. If there’s anything that we’d like to see change it’s an update in terms of size.
If Volvo is known for anything it’s safety and the S60 only contributes to that record. Every trim comes standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. All but the base trim come with adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system, and front parking sensors.
The base S60 comes with 18-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, a digital instrument panel, dual-zone automatic climate control, faux leather upholstery, a 9-inch infotainment system, integrated Google Maps navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, 10 speakers, and four USB-C ports. AWD models get heated front seats.
The mid-grade S60 comes with real leather upholstery, power-folding rear seats, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, a 360-degree camera system, and front parking sensors.
The top version of the S60 with the B5 engine comes with 19-inch wheels, front sport seats, a heads-up display, quad-zone climate control, a crystal gear shifter, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
The Recharge Core gets all of the same features as the normal Core model except that it adds the Recharge T8 powertrain and 11 speakers instead of 10.
The Recharge Plus is identical to the Plus aside from the drivetrain change.
The Recharge Ultimate is nearly the same as the regular B5 Ultimate except that it loses the quad-zone climate control.
This is the big breakaway performer of the family as it gets the T8 Recharge powertrain, AWD, 19-inch forged wheels with summer tires, a lower ride height, gold-painted Brembo front brakes, adjustable Ohlins dampers, heated front sport seats with upgraded leather, heated sports steering wheel, heated rear seats, gold-colored seat belts, and a 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
Volvo covers every S60 with a limited warranty that covers four years or 50,000 miles. Powertrain components get the same mileage and time constraints on their warranty coverage. Hybrid parts get coverage for eight years or 100,000 miles. Volvo also provides complimentary maintenance for every S60 for the first three years or 36,000 miles. That’s a comprehensive package that only falls behind Jaguar in the segment.

The Volvo S60 offers an interesting product that almost doesn’t seem to have a huge market. It’s not just electric and while it’s available as a gas-only sedan, it’s not as powerful or sporty as others in the segment. Those who want something a bit quirky and unique should really consider the S60 though because it offers a lot in the way of comfort, luxury, and quality. Here’s a look at the new car incentives available right now.
