The Mercedes Vision EQXX Concept signals the long-time luxury automaker’s plans for an electrified future of mobility.

A decade ago and beyond, the heart of the argument against electric cars was range and it wasn’t just about total distance. Infrastructure, charging times, and familiarity were all major hurdles that even now haven’t been totally remedied. Despite that, Mercedes-Benz is taking a bold approach to the electric car with its Vision EQXX Concept that marries timeless styling with would be world-record range if it were a production car rolling off of the line today. Let’s take a deeper look at Mercedes’ vision of the future.

Mercedes has seen its competitors and decided to tackle their EV challenges in a different way. Range is the all-conquering pill they hope and so the Vision EQXX Concept has a hypothetical range of 620-miles per charge. That’s quite a bit further than the Mercedes EQS which has a maximum measured distance of 422-miles. It’s also better than the Lucid Air Dream which the EPA rates at 520-miles per charge. Of course, for now, this is still a concept car but it’s worth considering how Mercedes reaches that 620-mile marker.

Notably, it’s an internally-generated figure that was the result of “digital simulations based in real-life traffic conditions”. That figure might not be a direct product of independent or even real-world testing but it’s still impressive to see how Mercedes achieves it. The EQXX uses a 900-volt architecture and a rear-wheel driving battery pack that is said to have just a little less than 100kWh worth of total capacity. For the EV-familiar, that sounds like an average sized battery with super-fast charging. In reality, it’s a whole new battery architecture that leverages high silicon anodes to achieve better energy density. According to Mercedes, the EQXX battery is half the size of the EQS battery while being 30 percent lighter too. Sure, it only makes 201-horsepower but this car isn’t about power, it’s about range.

If you’ve seen the full-dash infotainment system in the EQS, the EQXX will look similar but somehow considerably more impressive. Instead of three seemingly integrated panels, this is a true 8K 47.5-inch screen, It’s not just big and beautiful though. First, it uses an all-new “star-cloud” avatar that interacts with occupants and responds to their needs more actively than old-school passive vehicle assistants. The screen also features a truly incredible 3D navigation system that is so wild that you simply won’t believe how cool it looks without seeing it for yourself.

The interior materials themselves might not be actively interactive but they’re still futuristic. Mushroom-sourced leather-alternative Mylo™ makes an appearance as part of the seat cushions. The carpets are completely made from bamboo, and recycled PET bottles have been used as well. The entire interior screams that this car is from the future of automobiles.

It’s really rare to find a car as aerodynamic as the EQXX. Mercedes says that it has a drag coefficient of just .17 which is incredibly good. To achieve that, the rear wheels and tires are actually 2-inches narrower than the front of the car. That’s the exact opposite of the way many more sporty Mecedes-Benz models have been in the past and it serves the long-range purpose of the EQXX. Atop the vehicle you’ll find solar panels that, on a perfect day, provide up to 15 miles of range all on their own. It’s clear that the EQXX isn’t just another fancy concept that doesn’t have a major part of a brand’s plans. This sedan is sure to influence Mercedes for years to come.
