The Festival of Speed is back at Goodwood and motorsports history is on full display once again. All the greatest race cars from years past and today are in attendance, speeding past excited fans. However, this year’s event is dedicated to one brand in particular. Porsche is celebrating 75 years since its first automobile ever – the Type 356 back in 1948. Since that first four-wheeled creation, Porsche has cemented its place in the automotive world as one of the premier luxury sports car brands and has amassed a commendable number of racing championships. Porsche is also taking the time to recognize the 60th anniversary of the Porsche 911, the German automakers most successful and long running model. Let’s check out how Porsche is being celebrated and take note of all the major events at Goodwood.

One of the key fixtures at the Festival of Speed is the Central Feature. This is an art installation dedicated to the Festival of Speed’s theme. This is the third time that Porsche has been the theme for this event, with the first featuring a dedicated 911 display in 2013 and the second in 2018 representing Porsche’s motorsports history. The Central Feature for 2023 takes both of those ideas and melds them into one beautiful celebration of the Porsche brand.

The 2023 Festival of Speed Central Feature utilizes six different Porsche models attached to different stylized beams that each help represent the automotive brand’s 75-year history. There are two variations of the 911 on the display, a modern 992 generation sporting a Martini livery and a 997 model in a Sport Classic configuration. There are also three different Porsche motorsport legends – a classic Blaupunkt 962 Le Mans racer, a modern 963 wearing the multi-color 75th anniversary livery from this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, and an 804 single-seater Formula 1 car to represent their short stint in that landscape. Finally, the Central Feature includes the model that started it all, the Porsche Type 356.

The Festival of Speed is also showcasing nearly every Porsche ever made at Goodwood. Every iteration of the 911, the Type 356, the 959, and plenty of other substantial Porsche cars – including new concept vehicles that have yet to see the pavement. Fans in attendance can view this substantial Porsche history up close as these important pieces of the manufacturer’s history can be found parked around the Central Feature, in the Supercar Paddock, at the Porsche Experience stand, or even witness them in action as they speed their way up the Festival of Speed Hill.

This year’s festival of speed also coincides with the 24 Hours of Le Mans Centennial, a racing event that Porsche has been a dominant force in for nearly its entire existence as an automotive brand. To celebrate, there will be a number of different Le Mans championship cars in attendance and all of Porsche’s Le Mans entrants from over the years will be seen in full force. Not only is Porsche celebrating their success at Le Mans at Goodwood, but their other legendary racecars from rallying, Formula 1, and GT will make their presence known as they demonstrate their performance on the Hill Climb.

As for the Porsche concepts, there were two in attendance at the Festival of Speed. The first is the Porsche Mission X concept hypercar. This Porsche concept acts as an all-electric successor to the 918 Spyder and lends itself as a manifestation of Porsche’s dedication towards producing highly engineered machines with exhilarating performance no matter the propulsion type. Mission X aims to achieve one horsepower per kilogram of weight in an attempt to create a peak performance vehicle that will set new records at the Nürburgring.

The other Porsche concept making its debut at the Festival of Speed is the Porsche Vision 357 Speedster. This all-electric concept vehicle acts as an homage to the 356, even utilizing the same passenger tonneau cover design and similarly styled wheels. They’ve made this connection with the original model so that the Vision 357 Speedster can act in a similar fashion to the 356. A new beginning of something great.

Under this Porsche concept’s skin is the same technology found in the Porsche 718 GT4 e-performance. This means that the Vision 357 Speedster carries similar electric motors and battery designs to the Porsche Mission R while also utilizing the chassis of a Porsche 718 GT4 Clubsport. It’s true to form Porsche and exemplifies Porsche’s roots staying strong through the future of their designs.

Goodwood is also celebrating its very own 75th anniversary alongside Porsche. The British track has grown to be the motorsports hub every year thanks to its continued celebration of racing and vehicles through the Festival of Speed. Outside of Porsche’s celebratory functions, Goodwood is bringing Formula 1, WRC, Formula Drift, and even NASCAR racecars, new and old, all together to celebrate the love of racing and prove themselves as they speed up Goodwood’s famous Hill. There are also new reveals from the likes of Lamborghini, McLaren, Hyundai, and Aston Martin. It’s all going on now, June 13th through the 16th, so be sure to check it out in person or on the live stream!
