What’s New for the 2020 C-HR?

The Toyota C-HR has always been full of style and the 2020 C-HR benefits from slightly revised front fascia for a more dynamic look. The 2020 model also gets standard LED headlights that give it a more modern and futuristic look.

Toyota is also offering two new colors on the C-HR: Supersonic Red and Hot Lava Orange. Inside, the 2020 C-HR now comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can easily connect your smartphone and access your favorite apps. 2020 Toyota C-HR Powertrain

The 2020 Toyota C-HR keeps things simple under the hood by offering a single powertrain option. All C-HRs are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 144 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes only with Toyota’s continuously variable transmission which ensures brisk acceleration with smooth responses and optimized fuel economy.

The C-HR is only available with front-wheel drive which is perfectly adequate, but might be seen as a demerit when many competitors at least offer all-wheel drive as an option.

When you hop behind the wheel, you’ll find the C-HR is a responsive handling little crossover. The suspension is comfortable, but is well tuned to tackle curves with more enthusiasm than you might expect.

The powertrain, unfortunately, doesn’t excite to the same degree, offering only adequate acceleration. If you drive any of its main competitors, you might notice the high-for-its-size weight, which doesn’t help its modest powertrain perform. You can learn more about the C-HR’s bigger brother, the RAV4 here.

2020 Toyota C-HR Fuel Economy & MPG

While the C-HR doesn’t have blistering acceleration, it makes up for it with some solid fuel economy. The EPA rates the 2020 Toyota C-HR at 27 mpg when driving it the city, 31 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 29 mpg. These numbers are decent, but they do fall a little behind key competitors like the Honda HR-V, Nissan Kicks, and the Hyundai Kona.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

When you approach the bold exterior of the C-HR, you might expect the interior to be a little wild too. What you’ll actually find is a fairly conventional looking interior, for better or worse. For better, everything is where you expect to find it. The cabin offers a good amount of space, as you’d expect from a crossover, with seating for five people.

The seats are covered in an attractive cloth on the lower trims, while the Limited trim gets leather seats. Higher trims are also available with attractive two-tone interior designs. The C-HR has a total of 86 cubic feet of passenger volume with about 38 inches of headroom, both front and rear. Front passengers get 43.4 inches of leg room and rear passengers get 31.7 inches.

You might be a little disappointed with the cargo capacity of the C-HR, as its sloping roof and funky styling mean the C-HR only offers 19.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats. If you fold these down, you’ll have a more generous 37-cubic feet to work with, but it’s still a fairly high lift to the cargo area. Entertainment & Technology

If you’re interested in the latest technology, you’ll find the 2020 C-HR offers a good amount of tech. Even the base model comes equipped with a large 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system is easy to use, with simple, easy to learn menu structures.

The C-HR comes with SiriusXM Satellite radio, Wi-Fi capabilities, and standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which means you can connect to your smartphone and access your favorite podcast, music or navigation apps on the go. The six-speaker audio system delivers nice, crisp audio for your listening enjoyment.

Safety Features

If safety is a priority for you, you’ll be pleased to know the 2020 Toyota C-HR scores well in this department. The IIHS gave it good crash test ratings in all categories, so both front and rear passengers are well-protected in the event of a collision. Toyota includes some impressive safety technology too.

All C-HR models come equipped with Toyota Safety Sense-P, an advanced suite of safety technologies. This suite of tech includes things like low-speed emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, forward-collision mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring is an option on the upper trim levels.

Warranties

Toyota provides lots of peace of mind thanks to its sterling reputation for reliability. The cherry on top is a 3-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty that would cover any potential issue that might arise from the factory other than normal wear, plus a 5-year, 60,000-mile warranty to cover the powertrain. Toyota also covers the C-HR with a 60-month, unlimited rust-through warranty to cover unexpected corrosion.

What we think

The 2020 Toyota C-HR is a pretty easy vehicle to recommend to a certain demographic. As it’s geared towards a younger audience, someone just graduating college would find it ideal. If you don’t need to worry about kids, the C-HR offers plenty of space for you and a couple of friends. The styling is dynamic, the fuel economy is good, and there is a good, if not great, amount of cargo space.

The 2020 C-HR’s leisurely performance makes it ideal for newer drivers and its low price of entry combined with Toyota reliability make it a solid choice. If you can find an upper XLE or Limited trim, they’re worth the modest bump in price for the additional features they offer. Yes, there are competitors that offer superior fuel economy and more cargo space, but the 2020 Toyota C-HR has unmatched style and a fun-to-drive personality.
