Audi hasn’t added much to the 2022 A5 after it saw big changes last year. Among the ones to watch out for are the addition of a Sports suspension on the coupe and a Black Optic package that adds dark trim to the car.
Great powerplant
High tech interior
Luxurious materials
Cramped back seats
We’d love a manual transmission option
The A5 is an outstanding grand tourer for a number of reasons. It provides very sharp responses to sharp inputs but also manages to soak up miles without the twitchy nature of its more aggressive family members. It’s easy to see out of, comfortable, and properly quick considering that fewer than 300 ponies lay under the hood. Some of that comes from the mild hybrid system that fills torque like a supercharger and the rest is due to a skillfully tuned turbocharged engine.
The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is fast and effective whether you’re pulling paddles or letting it do its own thing. We think this car is great for just about anyone who wants a practical yet slightly sporty car regardless of if they plan to make it a weekend cruiser or an everyday commuter car. The only ding on it is that it really falls short of is being a seriously performance-oriented sports car.
Audi uses something it calls “Quattro with Ultra Technology” for the Quattro system in the A5 and it might be the only downside. Like almost every other FWD-biased AWD system in the automotive world, it works in FWD mode most of the time but switches to AWD when it needs to. In our testing, it seemed to perform quite well in slippery situations but does lack the ability to really flick the tail of the car out when twisty roads provide that opportunity.
For those who want a seriously sporty driving experience, the S5 and RS5 sit above the A5 as performance alternatives. In the S5, a 349-horsepower V6 is the motivating factor and just like in the A5, the same three trim levels are available. Above that, the RS5 makes 444-horsepower with same V6 as the S5 but only comes in a single trim as a coupe. Both the S5 and the RS5 take advantage of a Quattro system that can push more power to the rear wheels than the one available in the A5.
The EPA estimates that every two-door A5 will get 31 mpg on the highway but there’s a small variation in the city. The Cabriolet will get 23 mpg while the hardtop gains one mile per gallon for a total of 24. That makes sense considering its smoother edges.
Regardless of trim, the A5 is a nice place to be. Nothing about the materials used within feels cheap or disappointing at this price point. Sure, we’d love a power-adjustable steering wheel or even more opulence but it’s not necessary. The A5 is full of luxurious surfaces, satisfying switchgear, and classy design touches. We especially like the ergonomic choices like the volume knob placement or the cell phone holder.
Rear seat space is a bit cramped as is to be expected for a vehicle of this size and type. Nevertheless, a couple of smaller adults or kids will fit back there just fine. When total vehicle occupancy is two or less, those seats become important storage areas as you’ll have just 10.9 cubic feet of trunk space.
Notably, the Cabriolet can drop its top or put it back on in just 15 seconds. While there’s a slight fuel penalty for going with the soft top, it’s probably the one we’d pick as it’s nearly as quiet as the coupe but offers better flexibility in our eyes.
Audi has done a great job with regard to the tech package in the A5. The 10.1-inch infotainment system is sophisticated and easy to use. It’s quick too and the stuff that shouldn’t be involved in the touchscreen isn’t. Want heated seats or a quick climate adjustment? It’s a set of physical buttons just below the screen and it works great too. To simplify things, Audi includes both Android and Apple connectivity, and for the audiophiles, an excellent Bang & Olufsen sound system is available. Buyers who go for the Premium Plus or the Prestige will also get a 12.3-inch driver information display which is awesome. If there’s a downside, it’s that buyers will have to pay extra to get features like adaptive cruise control and other features like second-row heated seats are unavailable entirely.
Every A5 comes with forward collision mitigation and standard lane departure warning. It hasn’t been scored by the NHTSA and seems to have just barely fallen short of awards from the IIHS with mostly good scores in its testing.
Audi sells both the Coupe, Sportback and the Cabriolet convertible in three trim levels that are identical regardless of which top you choose. There’s one difference on the Prestige which is that the Cabriolet gets ventilated front seats as standard. Otherwise everything between the body styles is the same from the drivetrain to the safety equipment. Buyers can add a Black Optic package which provides unique 19-inch wheels, red brake calipers, and a combination of black and silver accents.
Audi starts the lineup with 18-inch wheels, tri-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable heated front seats, leather upholstery, LED headlights, ambient interior lighting, a 10.1-inch infotainment system, and a 7-inch driver information display. Lane departure warning and forward collision mitigation are both standard.
The A5 Premium Plus adds a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch driver information display, upgraded LED headlights, a wireless charging pad, faux leather-wrapped accents, driver’s seat memory functions, satellite radio, and parking sensors. Additional safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system, and lane-keep assist.
At the top of the pile the A5 Prestige gets a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, a heads-up display, integrated navigation, and an automated parking system.
Every Audi A5 comes with four years or 50,000-miles worth of both a powertrain warranty and limited warranty coverage. Audi does not offer any kind of complimentary maintenance while BMW does.

The Audi A5 is kind of a gateway car that spans the gap between cars that focus more on luxury or practicality than they do driving dynamics and the ones that flip those around. It’s not a hardcore sports car by any means but it’s also not just a posh luxury cruiser that fails to deliver good driving dynamics. It’s got room to improve for sure but as it sits it’s a pretty solid value for money.
