When it comes to huge power, massive towing capacity and big-time luxury, the 2022 Ford F-250 is one seriously capable heavy-duty truck.
If you need serious hauling and towing capability, its hard to beat a 2022 Ford F-250. As the entry point of Ford’s Super Duty line of pickup truck beefcakes that have a more robust chassis than lightweight F-150s, this model is part of the 4th generation that kicked off in 2017. Featuring only V8 motors with a 6.2L variant as the base offering, the F-250 can also be fitted with a thumping PowerStroke turbodiesel making over 1,000 lb-ft of torque. New this year, a 12” infotainment touchscreen display with SYNC 4 is standard on Lariat trim and above. There is also some appearance package shuffling and a new Atlas Blue exterior color option.

A mammoth truck with eye-popping metrics
A 6.2L V8 making 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic is standard on all 2022 F-250s except the Limited. That truck comes with the 6.7L PowerStroke turbodiesel V8 that produces 475 horsepower and a whopping 1,050 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a 10-speed automatic, as does the 7.3 L gas-powered V8 with its 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of twist – a $2,045 option. Four-wheel drive is available across the lineup and features electronic shift-on-the-fly control of high and low ranges. For serious four wheeling, check out the Tremor package. It adds a lifted off-road suspension, beefy 35” rubber and an electronically locking rear differential. It will even wade through 33” of water.
Hauling and towing is where the F-250 shines, it can lug up to 22,800 pounds when using a fifth-wheel setup or 20,000 without. Max payload tops out at over two tons and an available front winch is rated for 12,000 pounds. All 2022 F-250s come with trailer sway control and features like a trailer brake controller, dual batteries, beefier axles and upgraded alternators are all available. Tow-focused tech systems include blind spot monitoring (BSM) for the whole trailer and Trailer Reverse Guidance that stitches together four camera views to give drivers a clear picture of what’s going on out back. Ford’s slick Pro Trailer Backup Assist allows drivers to turn a dashboard knob in the direction they want the trailer to move, simplifying complex towing maneuvers.
The EPA does not perform fuel economy testing on heavy duty trucks like the F-250 Super Duty, which is probably a good thing because efficient is not how most would describe this truck. It weighs as much as 7,500 pounds, even with aluminum alloy construction, and is made to haul heavy things. For reference, Car and Driver magazine performed in-house testing of a 2021 F-250 and found it earned 15 mpg in highway driving. Forbes magazine did the same with a PowerStroke diesel model and recorded an average of 21 mpg, which means a roughly THOUSAND-MILE RANGE with the optional 48-gallon gas tank.
Cabin and cargo space is dictated by body configuration, from the two-door Regular cab to SuperCab and four-door Crew Cab with the option for a 6.75- or 8-foot bed. Vinyl and cloth upholstery is found lower down the trim ladder but fancy leather, like the trim-exclusive Dark Marsala theme on Platinums, allows you dress things up. Other luxurious features on tap include fully climatized front seats that can be optioned with massaging capability, a heated steering wheel and power-sliding rear glass with defrost. Conveniences like rain-sensing wipers, power-adjustable pedals and rear underseat storage bins are just a few of the reasons the F-250 is so popular.
All models except the base XL come with a touchscreen-enabled infotainment display, but you’ll need at least a Lariat to access the big 12” version. That system features SYNC 4 software with Over-The-Air updates, navigation and wireless connection for Apple and Android phones. A Wi-Fi hotspot is included across the lineup, while the XLT and above feature dual USB ports and dual 120V power receptacles. Audiophiles will appreciate the B&O 10-speaker stereo and the available wireless charging pad keeps the cabin cord-free.
Ford includes some of their Co-Pilot360 brand of ADAS on XLT trims and higher, like Pre-Collision Assist with AEB, BSM with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and automated high beam control. As you move through the trim hierarchy, systems like reverse sonar, LKA and ACC are unlocked. A roster of airbags, including full-length side curtain, are standard along with an SOS post-crash alert.
Effectively the work truck, XL trim keeps it basic with steel wheels, manual crank windows and black plastic trim. This focus on durability and function over style is part of how the F-250 earns a spot on this list of longest lasting trucks. Vinyl seat and floor covering is designed to take abuse and you will not find a fancy touchscreen display here. However, a Wi-Fi hotspot can be enabled, Bluetooth connectivity is on hand and trailer sway control is standard. For field trucks, the $400 FX4 package adds all-terrain tires, Hill Descent Control and an off-road tuned suspension.
Features like a 18” alloy wheels and power-operated locks and windows make the XLT a more livable daily driver. An 8” infotainment touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 3 software is integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Co-Pilot360, the company’s suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) is standard from here on up and includes automatic high beams and Automated Emergency Braking (AEB). An integrated trailer brake controller is on hand and the Trailer Tow High Capacity package adds an upgraded rear axle.
Power is the name of the Lariat game with power-operated trailer mirrors, sliding rear glass, pedals and front seats. Dual-zone automatic climate control improves the cabin along with leather upholstery and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Infotainment gets a big upgrade in the form of a 12” touchscreen display with SYNC 4 and wireless connection for Apple and Android smartphones. There is also an 8” gauge cluster screen, connected navigation and 10-speaker stereo from Bang & Olufsen here.
A $15,000 step up from Lariat nets you a King Ranch with unique “Kingsville” leather seating, standard four-wheel drive, 20” rims and Lane Keeping Alert (LKA). The amenities pile on with illuminated running boards, two-tone paint and memory settings for the side mirrors, pedals and driver’s seat. For $3350, the Ultimate package adds a panoramic moonroof, full LED lighting and massaging seats – a feature you will not find on the Ram 2500, which we compare here.
F-250 Platinum looks the part with satin aluminum trim and features power-deployable running boards. LED lighting is in use for the headlights, fogs and tail lamps with conveniences like a remote tailgate release, integrated tailgate step and LED box lighting adding to the Platinum vibe. Opt for the Tremor Off-Road package and you’ll have 35” tires, a 2” suspension lift, skid plates and low-speed Rock Crawl Mode.
Sitting atop the 2022 F-250 mountain is Limited trim that comes standard with the PowerStroke turbodiesel, a $10,000 option on the rest of the lineup. Adaptive steering is said to give this monster truck more gentle driving manners, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is included as is the trim-exclusive Admiral Blue leather theme. Additional high-end features include the Miko suede headliner, heated rear seats and 360° exterior camera monitor.
Ford’s warranty covers the vehicle for 3 years or 36,000 miles and gas powertrains for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Diesel-powered F-250s come with a 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and all trucks include 5 years of roadside assistance.
