2022 Honda Passport Powertrain

When you buy a 2022 Honda Passport, you won’t have to stress about which powertrain is going to be right for you as Honda offers the same engine and transmission options across the range. Each Passport is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Managing the engine is a nine-speed automatic transmission that provides brisk acceleration and helps to optimize efficiency. The engine and transmission provide very smooth and predictable response and acceleration.

The base EX-L model is offered in your choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while all other trims come only equipped with all-wheel drive. The suspension consists of a MacPherson strut arrangement up front and a multi-link setup at the back. Maximum ground clearance for the AWD models is 8.1-inches. The result is a vehicle that is competent off-road, and will likely handle most trails and ruts you encounter. On road, the ride is reasonably comfortable, but can be a bit choppy depending on the road conditions.

Towing & Payload

If you need to occasionally tow, the 2022 Honda Passport should provide plenty of towing capacity. The front-wheel drive model is limited to towing 3,500 models, but the all-wheel drive models can tow up to 5,000 models, plenty for a small to moderate sized boat. Choose the Utility Package on your Passport and you’ll get the necessary tow hitch from the factory.

2022 Honda Passport Fuel Economy & MPG

The 2022 Honda Passport achieves decent, if not remarkable, fuel economy numbers. The EPA rates the front-wheel drive model at 20 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined. Now, most Passport models come equipped with AWD and fortunately there isn’t a bit hit with AWD models getting 19 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. This compares reasonably well to competitors like the Jeep Grand Cherokee which gets 22 mpg combined or the Ford Edge which gets 23 mpg combined. And, both the Jeep and Ford have larger engine options that are thirstier than the Passport.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

When you climb into the 2022 Honda Passport, you’ll find a simple, straightforward, and easy to use interior. That’s not to say the Passport is austere or lacking features. Even the base model comes with leather-trimmed seat, heated front seats, and an automatic tri-zone climate control system that lets each of the front passengers and those in the rear seat set individual temperatures. The top trim level even gets heated and ventilated front seats and heated outboard rear seats for greater comfort. A one-touch power moonroof comes standard, letting in natural light and fresh air when desired. The Passport seats five people in comfort with 39.5 inches of headroom up front and 40-inches of headroom in the back. Legroom is equally generous, with 40.9-inches in the front and 39.6-inches in the back. There is also plenty of space for your stuff as the Passport can hold 41.2 cubic feet behind the second row of seats. Fold the 2nd row down and the cargo volume increases to 77.7 cubic feet. Entertainment & Technology

The 2022 Passport impresses in the technology department too. Each Passport comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that features customizable settings along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for easy smartphone integration. The infotainment also offers Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation, voice recognition capability, and Honda HD digital traffic to help avoid jams. The standard sound system is a 7-speaker system with 215 watts, but the top trim Passport gets an upgraded 540-watt premium audio system with 10-speakers. A wireless phone charger keeps your device charged and ready to go, along with the 3 USB ports, with 2 for the rear passengers. The Passport is similar to the Pilot. Safety Features

When it comes to safety, the 2022 Passport is loaded with the Honda Sensing® Technologies which includes a whole suite of driver aids like collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, and lane keeping assist. The Passport also comes standard with blind-spot information system to alert you to traffic you might not see, auto high-beam headlights to help prevent blinding oncoming traffic, and a multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines to help you maneuver safely. Should a collision occur, the advanced body structure and advanced airbags help protect occupants.

What we think

The 2022 Honda Passport is a great choice for a small family looking to take adventures. The engine and transmission provide all the performance you should need along with some good off-road capability should our adventures take you off the beaten path. If there are deficiencies with the Passport, they would lie with the merely average fuel economy numbers and sometimes choppy ride. It’s hard to pick the best trim level, but the EX-L with all-wheel drive makes a good case with plenty of capability, lots of driver aids and safety tech, and almost all the same features as the more expensive models. If you wonder if a new or used Passport is best, read our comparison here.
