Toyota is introducing the brand-new 2022 Corolla Cross. Built in collaboration with Mazda at a new manufacturing facility in Alabama, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is the newest addition to Toyota’s SUV roster. It’s smaller than the Toyota RAV4 and larger than the Toyota C-HR, hoping to find its’ home in the niche in between the two other members of the Toyota family.
The compact SUV borrows some of the exterior design from the Corolla sedan and the RAV4. Looking at the front grill or the body style from the side, you notice the similarities. The similarities don’t end on the outside. The interior is very similar to a Corolla sedan as well, which just marked the 50-millionth sale about a month ago. The success of the Corolla sedan is probably why Toyota decided to attach that successful nameplate to this latest addition.
Affordable pricing
Lots of standard safety features
Good visibility
Variety of color options
Slower acceleration
No additional engine options
Regardless of which trim we talk about, the Corolla Cross comes with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine producing 169 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). A hybrid powertrain option is supposed to be coming in 2023, but, for now, it’s just the one option. Front-wheel drive is standard with the Corolla Cross, but all-wheel drive is available for an additional $1300.
The powertrain puts on an OK performance, but it’s not dynamic. It’s a little pokey. It’s not a dealbreaker, but the Corolla Cross just doesn’t accelerate in a big way. Now, that’s OK if it’s not being used for constant highway or interstate driving. Then it will get the job done, but it could stand to have a little more oomph to it. Maybe the hybrid powertrain that is in the works for the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross will be more refined with a little more power to it.
The Corolla Cross can tow up to 1,500 pounds, so it’ll handle a personal watercraft being taken out to the lake. Or a small trailer for work purposes. It could feel like a bit of a struggle, but, again, it should get the job done.
When it comes to handling, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross does well. There’s good grip around curves. It’s a smooth ride, taking on bumps without passengers feeling the brunt of them.
The Toyota Corolla Cross does well with an EPA-estimated 32 mpg combined rating in FWD. That equals out to 29 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. In AWD, it’s not much of a decrease, getting 29 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. There aren’t any complaints on this topic.
If the interior seems familiar, it’s because it is. Looking around, one notices the familiar design of the Toyota Corolla sedan and hatchback. The cabin design has been tested and tried with the Corolla, so it’s a comfortable environment. The look of the dash, gauges, and controls are Corolla all the way. The audio could be a little easier to control, but large knobs controlling the climate are quick to find and easy to use.
The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is taller than the sedan version of the Corolla, so there’s more space in the cabin and in the cargo area. There’s 26.5 cubic feet of cargo space to be exact. That’s only with the FWD models though. AWD models come with 25.2 cubic feet of cargo space, a little less due to the rear suspension. Compared to a Corolla sedan, there’s two inches of additional legroom in the back and an additional one inch of headroom in both the front and rear. Models with a sunroof with have slightly less headroom than those without one, but the front still has 39.5″ of headroom with the moonroof and 39.1″ in the rear.
The system and 7-inch touchscreen are easy for the user to navigate. The graphics and interface aren’t needlessly complicated. Anyone looking to connect to entertainment can do so through Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, or Amazon Alexa. A nine-speaker JBL sound system is optional, as with a lot of other vehicles, and it’s not a bad option if you are OK to spend a little on it.
Driver’s assist features are pretty impressive without going into any extra packages, but the Convenience Package on the Toyota Corolla Cross XLE will get a power rear liftgate, which is hard to pass up amenity once you’ve already experienced the feature on another vehicle.
Every trim level has an impressive safety suite that features forward-collision warning, collision avoidance with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist, and lane-departure warning. Nine airbags can be found throughout the cabin. That list is more than entry level trims with some other brands offer. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn’t rated this brand-new vehicle just yet, but many customers of the Toyota Corolla sedan have come to rely on them for safety. Toyota executives say they built the Corolla Cross with that same safety in mind.
With a difference of just $4,000 between the lowest and the highest trim, I don’t know that there is a wrong choice when deciding which model to go with. There are some additional features as you go higher, of course.
The base model has the infotainment (Apple, Android, Alexa, and a SiriusXM trial) and safety features I’d mentioned earlier, like lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and adaptive cruise control, to name a few. All of that is standard. There are also two USB ports in the front of the vehicle. It also has light gray fabric-trimmed seats. 17” steel wheels with silver wheel covers are also standard on the L trim. All trims are offered in FWD or AWD, so customers can take their pick.
Moving up to the LE gets blind-spot warning for additional safety. USB ports are available for rear passengers starting with the LE. Qi-wireless charging in the front is also an added feature. The infotainment touchscreen has been bumped up from seven inches to eight inches, too. The fabric-trimmed seats are available in light gray or black. The wheels are still 17” but they are alloy wheels on the LE trim instead of the steel that comes with the L.
Further up the ladder, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE offers a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats. The seats are trimmed with SofTex (a synthetic leather) and available in macadamia/mocha or black. There’s a little more luxury at the top here with a leather-covered shift knob. Also offered with the XLE is dual-zone automatic climate control. Front and rear parking assist with automatic breaking round out the upgrades for the top-tiered trim. The wheels bump up to 18” and are still alloy with the Corolla Cross XLE.
The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross comes with Toyota’s 3 year / 36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty, which applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Five-year warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and perforation from corrosion within five years with no mileage limitation.
Normal factory-scheduled maintenance is covered for two years or 25,000 miles under ToyotaCare. Two years of roadside assistance, regardless of mileage, is also part of that warranty.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is a sensible, fuel-efficient SUV with a healthy amount of standard safety features. It may not provide the luxury of a higher-end, larger SUV, but it’s not made for that market. It’s meant to be reliable and affordable. It should deliver on both of those qualities, making it a viable option to the Jeep Compass, Nissan Rogue Sport, or the Kia Sportage.
