The minivan segment is small these days, but the 2024 Honda Odyssey is still going strong nearly 30 years since it arrived – a history we cover in this Odyssey Through The Years article. Part of the fifth-generation model that landed in 2018, this year’s minivan arrives with no changes versus the 2023 Odyssey. So, we’re getting towards the dreaded long-in-the-tooth stage that no vehicle benefits from, and yet, the Odyssey remains a competent, well-engineered option for anyone who shuttles kids and gear around on a regular basis.
Loaded with standard driver aids
Smooth V6 power
Space aplenty
Fuel economy is just okay
Missing the latest tech
Magic Seats weigh 68 pounds each
Dear families – skip the SUV and get an Odyssey
Every 2024 Honda Odyssey runs on a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 that produces 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a 10-speed automatic to power the front wheels only, there is no option for AWD. If you live in the Snow Belt and want an AWD minivan, only the Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna offer it.
As for fuel economy, the Odyssey is rated for 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. That’s in line with Kia’s Carnival, but not even close to the hybridized Sienna that earns 36 mpg combined for FWD models. So, while the 2024 Odyssey comes with smooth power delivery, a dose of efficiency would be nice.
Inside is where the 2024 Honda Odyssey really shines. The middle row center seat can slide forward for easy front-row access and be removed, leaving space for 7 passengers. The remaining “Magic Seats” can be moved fore, aft, and side-to-side depending on your needs – as in keeping two middle-row siblings separated.
Those seats can also be taken out – though they are heavy – if you need to haul 4 x 8-foot sheets of plywood. This requires flipping the third row into dedicated rear underfloor wells, which doubles as a grocery bag space when the third row is upright. Cargo space behind that wayback seat is 33 cubic feet, there are 89 cubes of cargo room behind the second row and 145 behind the first row when the second row is slid forward.
Aside from the cloth upholstery in base EX models, all 2024 Odysseys come with leather seating. Triple-zone automatic climate control is standard across the board as are heated front seats.
An available CabinTalk feature lets the driver calmly communicate with rear passengers through the speakers or connected headphones. Those headphones are part of an available rear-seat entertainment system that features a 10.2-inch screen which folds out of the headliner. It comes with a fun “How Much Farther?” app that takes a page out of airline in-seat flight tracker software so kids can track their trip status.
An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is fitted to all 2024 Honda Odysseys along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two must-have systems we explain here. Features like a Wi-Fi hotspot, an 11-speaker audio system, and in-cabin camera views are available higher up the trim ladder, but Honda does not offer features like a surround-view monitor, head-up display, or digital rearview mirror on the Odyssey.
Fortunately, safety is a strong suit for the Odyssey as it has received a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS (for the 2023 model). Honda Sensing, the automaker’s suite of advanced driver-assistance aids is standard and includes forward collision mitigation, a lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams.
Entry-level EX Odysseys come with 18-inch alloy wheels, full exterior LED lighting, power-sliding side doors, and keyless entry with walk-away automatic locking. The cabin features cloth upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, and triple zone automatic climate control. Dual front USB ports, smartphone mirroring, an 8-inch touchscreen, and a 7-speaker stereo are also part of the deal.
EX-L trim adds a sunroof, a power-operated liftgate, and reverse tilt-down side mirrors. These models also feature leather seating, an acoustic laminated windshield, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 2 USB ports for the middle row.
About 10 years ago, there was a Honda Odyssey TV ad with heavy metal music and a blacked-out Odyssey that managed to incorporate a growling panther. It was awesome and so is the 2024 Odyssey when painted black to go with gloss black 19-inch rims, a black grille, and black leather with red contrast stitching.
The more buttoned-up Touring trim sports power-folding side mirrors, 2nd and 3rd-row sunshades, acoustic lamination for the door glass, a USB port for the third row, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and CabinTalk – Honda’s PA system. These models also have front and rear parking sensors and a rear entertainment system.
Atop the 2024 Odyssey hierarchy is the Elite model that boasts rain-sensing windshield wipers, a hands-free liftgate, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats. The 11-speaker stereo, and wireless charging pad round out the content and push the price beyond 50 large, so consult the latest new car incentives before hitting the Honda dealer.
The base 2024 Honda Odyssey EX is a perfectly acceptable value play as it brings ample technology, Honda Sensing, and heated front seats in the only sub-$40,000 package. But if you’re a parent who is still pretending a minivan isn’t a parent’s best friend, the dark and sleek Sport model should be neato enough for you to bypass the SUV segment.
But be sure to check out the Toyota Sienna at the same time as it comes standard with a hybrid powertrain and offers AWD. It also matches Honda’s basic warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles, 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and 2 years of complimentary maintenance.
