The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes to market as part of the fifth generation with 13 trim levels, three powertrains, and the choice of rear-wheel drive or one of three different 4WD systems. The 2024 Grand Cherokee comes with no changes from 2023 other than the introduction of a new set of 18-inch chrome wheels for the Limited trim.

Under the hood of most Grand Cherokee models is a 3.6-liter V6 that churns out 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. It sends that power to the rear wheels only in most versions of the SUV. According to the EPA, it’ll get up to 19 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway.
4WD is available across the lineup and standard on some trims too. In fact, Jeep offers three different versions of 4WD including Quadra-Trac, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. Each offers its own unique blend of off-road features culminating with an air-ride suspension and some 11 inches of ground clearance.
Jeep also offers an available 5.7-liter V8 on the top two trim levels Overland and Summit. It makes 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. It scores 14 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway. Those figures drop not only because of the increased power but also because the V8 requires the addition of 4WD.
Finally, a plug-in hybrid powertrain called 4xe is also available. It incorporates a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a battery to provide 4WD along with 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. It gets 23 mpg combined, the best in the family, and provides up to 26 miles of all-electric range too.
In our short time testing the Grand Cherokee L we found that this might be the best Jeep to drive on the road ever. That’s not to say that BMW or Mercedes have anything to worry about when it comes to handling skills but the Grand Cherokee is impressive. Take it off-road and that becomes even more true. On top of that, this SUV has a towing capacity of 7,200 pounds when properly equipped.
Grand Cherokee buyers have their pick of interior choices from bare bones and easy to clean or super luxurious, cozy, and soft on the other end of the spectrum. The Laredo-based models get cloth upholstery, quite a bit of hard plastic, and some soft-touch surfaces.
Upper-end trims have high-grade leather upholstery available along with massaging front seats and quad-zone climate control. Buyers from across the automotive spectrum should be capable of finding a Grand Cherokee that suits their personal preference when it comes to cabin accouterment.
All seats in the Grand Cherokee are comfortable and adjustable enough for long drives. We especially like the availability of heated and ventilated second-row seats. Copious power ports also make the journey more enjoyable. A panoramic sunroof is another worthwhile addition for those planning to make this SUV their main transportation.
Behind the second row of seats, you’ll find 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space which is about average for the segment. Fold those seats flat and storage space expands to 70.8 cubic feet. Those who need even more should consider the slightly longer Grand Cherokee L which adds a third row and maxes out the top cargo space to 84.6 cubic feet.
Jeep imbues the Grand Cherokee with a host of excellent technology from the base model up through the rest of the lineup. Things kick off with an 8.4-inch infotainment system and a digital gauge cluster along with six speakers. We’ve been fans of the Uconnect system used in all Stellantis products for a while and it’s still good here. The inclusion of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay only adds to the positives for this SUV.
A larger 10.1-inch infotainment system is also available or standard depending on trim level. It comes with more features like integrated navigation. Buyers can even add a front-passenger infotainment display to many versions of the Grand Cherokee. It allows the person in that seat to set up media, navigation directions, and more. Talk about an empowered co-pilot. It’s this kind of stuff that has the Grand Cherokee leaving vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner in the dust these days.
The stock sound system is fine but a bit hollow but a nine-speaker Alpine system fills in the audio depth nicely. Those who spring for the upper trim levels really should consider the 19-speaker McIntosh sound system though. It’s one of the clearest and cleanest in the business and provides rich audio depth regardless of the content that it’s playing.
In terms of safety tech, the Grand Cherokee hits the high notes beautifully. Base trim buyers get adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and rear parking sensors only. That’s a solid package and it’s bolstered by the fact that the 2023 GC is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner, the firm’s highest award.
The base Grand Cherokee kicks things off with 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, roof rails, heated mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, a digital gauge cluster, an 8.4-inch infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, six USB power ports, and six speakers.
The Laredo X adds 18-inch wheels, second-row floor-mounted cup holders, and a sunroof. Notably, the Laredo X has access to many additional features that the normal Laredo doesn’t.
The Altitude loses the sunroof but adds 18-inch gloss black wheels, rain-sensing wipers, faux leather upholstery, remote start, a power liftgate, a 115-volt power outlet, a black headliner, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, gloss black exterior accents, heated front seats, and gloss black roof rails.
Adding the X back into the mix includes the sunroof again along with nothing else. Really. The Altitude X is just the Altitude but with a sunroof.
The Limited adds a few more available paint colors, new chrome wheels, and a second interior color. On top of that, it gets power-adjustable front seats, driver’s seat memory settings, auto-dimming mirrors, ambient interior lighting, automatic high beams, LED fog lights, leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a 10.1-inch infotainment system, and a terrain-based driving mode selector. It loses the automatic wipers and the wireless charging pad from the Altitude though.
The base plug-in hybrid version of the Grand Cherokee is simply dubbed the 4xe. It comes with the same features found in the Limited trim.
Overland buyers get a mix of luxury and off-road equipment. This trim gets 20-inch wheels, front tow hooks, a panoramic sunroof, an adaptive air suspension, hill descent control, a two-speed transfer case, a power-adjustable steering wheel, ambient cabin lighting, ventilated front seats, upgraded leather upholstery, integrated navigation, and front parking sensors.
The Trailhawk is only available as a plug-in hybrid. It comes with unique parts that no other Grand Cherokee is available with like a front-facing camera and Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrain tires. In addition, it gets a gloss black roof, adaptive air suspension, an electronically disconnecting sway bar, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, integrated navigation, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery with faux suede accents, front tow hooks, and a nine-speaker sound system from Alpine.
The Summit trim is technically the top of the lineup and comes with a gloss black roof, real wood interior trim, front seat massaging functions, active driving assist technology, quad-zone climate control, front cross-traffic warning, driver attention warning, an automated parking system, a surround-view camera, and an electronic limited-slip differential on 4WD models.
The Overland 4xe is nothing more than a normal Overland trim with the 4xe drivetrain.
The Reserve package, available only on the Summit trim adds 21-inch wheels, a faux suede headliner, premium leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, ventilated second-row seats, a 10.25-inch front-passenger infotainment display, and a 19-speaker McIntosh sound system.
This trim is the same as the normal Summit but with the addition of the 4xe plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
Similarly, this trim simply adds the 4xe drivetrain to the Summit trim with the Reserve package.
The Grand Cherokee is no doubt one of the very best vehicles that Jeep has ever produced. It’s very capable, looks good, and feels great to sit in and drive. At the same time, the average price for one hovers around $60,000 which is a lot to pay for any vehicle, much less one that’s best used off-road where most buyers will never go. In fact, that’s BMW X5 and Audi Q5 money. For our cash, we’d spend about the same on an SUV that’s better to drive on-road and still benefit from the luxury goodies at that price. Jeep would benefit by lowering its pricing across the lineup. It’s recently seen a serious sales slump and in large part it’s due to the excessively high prices it’s charging for vehicles like the Grand Cherokee.
Jeep 4xe is the designation given to any Jeep with the brand’s plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and two electric motors.
The Grand Cherokee is 200.8 inches long or 16.7 feet.
At its most robust, the Grand Cherokee can tow up to 7,200 pounds.
