What’s New for the 2024 BMW X5?
The 2024 BMW X5 gets revised front and rear styling including a new bumper and front grille, new headlamps and taillamps, and updated wheel designs. Both the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engines get a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system, while the output on the six-cylinder engine gets a boost to 375 horsepower.
The 2023 BMW X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid variant has been replaced by a more powerful xDrive50e that offers 10 more miles of electric-only driving range. Along with an updated infotainment display, all X5s have BMW’s latest iDrive8 software interface and is also now available with the Highway Assistant hands-free driving feature that was first introduced in the new 7-series flagship luxury sedan. Also notable for this year is the elimination of the optional third row.

2024 BMW X5 Powertrain 9.25/10
The 2024 BMW X5 is offered with one of three powertrains. The sDrive40i and xDrive40i models are powered by a 375-hp turbocharged inline-six and have a 48V mild-hybrid system which slightly increases efficiency and torque.
The xDrive50e is a plug-in hybrid powered by a turbocharged inline-six and an electric motor. This powertrain combination generates 483 horsepower and will take you from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. It gets a larger 25.7-kwh battery pack for 2024 that bumps the electric range by 10 miles to 40 miles total—enough to power most daily commutes on solely EV.
Finally, the M60i is powered by a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 that takes it from 0 to 60 mpg in 3.9 seconds. The base X5 sDrive40i is rear-wheel drive while every other X5 is all-wheel drive. All three engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all provide superior power in all driving situations.
XDrive40i models have EPA ratings of 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway while the M60i drops to 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The xDrive50e plug-in hybrid has not been certified yet.

2024 BMW X5 Interior 9.25/10
The 2024 X5 continues to offer a luxurious and spacious cabin covered in high quality materials—even in entry-priced models—with many upscale features to choose from. Power-adjustable and heated front seats with memory for the driver are standard, as well as a panoramic sunroof and dual-zone automatic climate control.
The first and second rows offer plenty of room for adults, but it’s too bad the optional third row didn’t return for 2024. The X5 offers plenty of cargo space and with 66-cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded down, fits 26 carryon suitcases.
Sport seats with synthetic leather upholstery are standard on the X5, with available massage and ventilation. The dash is highlighted by a new ambient light bar with 15 color choices controlled through the infotainment system.
2024 BMW X5 Technology Features 9/10
The focal point of the X5’s cabin is a new curved display that resides over two-thirds of the dashboard. Behind the wheel is a 12.3-inch digital gauge display.
A larger 14.9-inch touchscreen provides access to BMW’s iDrive infotainment system which is designed to mimic the look and function of a smartphone. Configurable widgets in the system allow users to make quick and personalized interactions with the X5. The system is controlled by a rotary knob mounted on the center console—great for utilizing the system while driving.
The iDrive 8.5 software accepts voice commands and can open or close the panoramic moonroof, adjust the temperature, and control some driver-assistance features. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard features. Also included are a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot and a wireless charging pad for families who need to stay connected during road trips.
The 2024 X5 received an overall safety rating of four out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard safety and driver assist features include forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, parking sensors, and automatic high beams. More advanced features such as evasive steering assistance and an automated parking system are optional.

sDrive40i- $65,200
The base sDrive40i trim is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The sDrive40i comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable and heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, customizable LED ambient cabin lighting, keyless entry with push-button start, power-folding and heated side mirrors, 20-inch wheels, LED headlights with automatic high beams, adaptive suspension dampers.
Standard technology includes 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, navigation, a wireless device charger, a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a 10-speaker audio system. Standard safety and driver-assist features include forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, parking sensors, and automatic high beams.
xDrive40i – $67,500
The xDrive40i trim is identical to the sDrive40i trim except that it comes with all-wheel drive. Both the sDrive40i and the xDrive40i can add additional equipment, safety, and driver-assist features through packages.
xDrive50e – $72,500
The xDrive50e is a PHEV that combines a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a battery pack with a capacity of 25.7 kilowatt-hours. Standard features are the same as those on the sDrive40i and xDrive40i trims.
M60i – $89,300
The M60i trim is powered by a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 and comes standard with all-wheel drive. This trim offers higher performance than the other trims with an M Sport-tuned adaptive suspension, M Sport differential, exhaust, steering wheel, and brakes, and rear-wheel steering. Options are similar to other X5 models, but a few are exclusive to the M60i including performance and suspension upgrades, premium audio, and interior trim upgrades.

2024 BMW X5 Overall Value 8.75/10
Even though there are only four X5 trim levels, this midsize luxury SUV covers all the bases: all-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, high-performance, and hybrid. We like the xDrive40i with its sporty acceleration, mix of standard features and available options, and the capability of its all-wheel-drive. It handles better than most of its rivals like the Audi Q8 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE, we do wish there were more standard safety and driver-assistance features.
Like its main rivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi, BMW offers a limited warranty and powertrain warranty covering 4 years or 50,000 miles. What distinguishes it is complementary routine maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles.

The 2024 BMW X5 scores an 8.5 out of 10 for its range of powertrain options, luxurious and well-appointed cabin, and its cutting-edge infotainment system. We wish that more safety and convenience features were standard offerings, but the many packages do allow for some customization, letting you pick and choose what is important to you.
